  • Magewell’s new Director Mini is a mini marvel. This 5.5" “all-in-one” production tool with a $1,299 street price can mix multiple inputs and do picture-in-picture graphics, audio mixing, recording, streaming, and more, as IEBA's Anthony Burokas explains in this in-depth review.

    Nicely done Anthony, A review of the Director Mini done on a Yolobox adds a bit of humor I think, ;) . It's intriguing to think how Yololiv could improve the Yolobox looking at the Director Mini and viceversa how Magewell could improve DM learning from YB. A YB vs DM video would be great..

      Competition in the field is going to improve all the companies products and the end users, like ourselves, benefit.
      If Magewell sent me TWO of them, then I could have produced it on the Director Mini itself. Alas, that never happens.

    How many cameras can I connect to the Director Mini via NDI?

    Thanks for the intro Anthony! You mentioned being about to stream using Ethernet and WiFi to UA-cam, but there no bonding of the signal, correct? If no bonding, how would using 2 pipes help if sending to UA-cam only? Thanks again!!

    Consider a USB or HDMI extension cable/adapter to help you with tight port configurations. Great video, thank you.

    Hey there. I host a couple podcasts, and I'm looking into these switchers as a possible way to give me less editing work to do after...if I can get one of these to do all the graphics, cameras, titles music etc on the fly and record as the show is going, that would save me HOURS of editing! So...is this possible? Right now I use the Zoom Podtrak P4 with my mic going into it, as well as my cohosts in a different country coming in through zoom on USBC, and our sound effects and music coming in also through USBC from a tablet. We see and hear each other through zoom, and I'm recording the show locally from zoom, but also record the raw audio on the P4.....now where can one of these switchers come in and replace all that and make it more efficient and less work? Which is better, this or one of the Yoloboxes? What I'm hoping is to have one of these do all the same stuff, but on the fly, and live, while also recording, so that when we're done, I can just save the show as a finished and produced show with NO editing after. Is that possible and is that what these are truly for? The editing after is what kills me and is a real drag and time suck. Hope this makes sense and you can clarify for me on it all. Thanks!

      I have had the Yolobox Ultra as a dealer sold on this unit by Broadfield Distributing. Since 2/1/24 the Yolobox Ultra team and distributor has basically lied and knowingly false advertises features about the Yolobox Ultra that do not work in practice. In addition, they purposefully omit details about how features that you would expect to work like adding more than a Single Image to a show template that do not work. Five (5) month later dealing with Frank and the distributor I have had enough bullshit and I see many other customers are also sick of the false promises and unreliable Yolobox Ultras. I feel scammed and have lost huge reputation points with my client who I told Friday that they will need to return their Yolobox Ultra. We have a huge event in one week and now have to scramble for alternative solutions. I will now have to waste a week of my time personally editing videos because we do not trust Yolobox or their Distributor at all.

    The scenes thing might take some time to get used too.
    The browser features are very cool!

    ok
    Well, through this explanation, we will compare this device with the Yalobox Ultra.
    What do you advise when it comes to buying a device that works perfectly, with good video quality and good 60fbs
    please answer this question

    So this has to use an external internet connection to stream? No internal Sim slot. Which means a mobile ethernet or USB sim in remote use. Or HDMI out to a LiveU etc. It would be good to see how each of these connections worked in reality and what the quality is like. Plus if, unlike the Yolobox series, it provides a consistent frame rate to play nicely with other HDMI equipment? I think a 5 inch screen is a challenge to use outdoors on a bright day, especially if you use glasses, but the features appear more professional than Yolobox. Are you going to do a comparison video between them all?

      What no answer yet? Note do not buy the Yolobox Ultra as they lie about features and it is still full of bugs. I did try the SIM card internally and it only worked OK. I am returning all of my Yolobox Ultra as well as my client's unit, he is not happy about this experience.

      @@timreha No answer but I did buy one and I'm pleased with the results so far. It does come with an internal 2Gig account with Speedify and therefore will combine wi-fi, Ethernet and a USB dongle at the same time. (You can expand this by opening an account) This I'm yet to test it and compare it to my LiveU Solo. Currently I am designing a 3D printed cradle for the external modems to clip onto my tripod so I can keep everything neat and compact. What I really want to do it show this in operation outside a studio to see it working 'warts and all' in an uncontrolled space.

    Great review, buddy 👍
    Professional and fun as always.
    Though you forgot to mention the powerful Web API and the Shortcuts feature which add yet another layer of control over the device.
    So, are you ready to put on Magewell sweatshirt and join the team as a presenter? 😉
    Regards,
    Ori

      You are correct in that I missed that additional remote control capability for the video- but it is in the article.
      One thing to note is that the end user currently has to set up the cloud app themselves.
      That's going to dramatically reduce the number of people leveraging that tool.

    • @beam-a-live
      @beam-a-live 6 місяців тому

      Not sure what you mean by "set up the cloud app themselves"... sounds like the "Control Hub".
      I was not referring to it.
      I think it's not for the common consumer user.
      I was talking about the keyboard shortcuts you can define through the Web UI, that's one mean of control, and about the HTTP command API, which is another mean of control

    • @IEBATechThoughts
      @IEBATechThoughts 6 місяців тому

      @@beam-a-live Agreed - the Control Hub is not going to be for the majority of users. But it's a very intriguing remote solution.
      The Web API was difficult to show, as it's still being rolled out and there was no Companion module ready when I made the review.

    • @beam-a-live
      @beam-a-live 6 місяців тому

      I've implemented Web API commands directly via StreamDeck Website commands with "Get request in the background".
      I honestly see no reason for involving Companion in the workflow 🤷🏻‍♂️
      Unless I missing something 🤔

    • @IEBATechThoughts
      @IEBATechThoughts 6 місяців тому

      @@beam-a-live I tried that but couldn't get it working. Companion is supposed to make it a whole lot more drag and drop, as well as give status.

    Anthony - How does the Magewell Director Mini compare to the Yolobox Ulra? I have watched all of your videos and do not see amuch content about Yolobox Ultra features that are advertised as worked but in fact do not work. I read the Yolobox Forums and see many people with issues like I have had with Yolobox Ultra with still no resolution. Part of the reason I started a wholesale account to resell Yolobox Ultra is based on your glowing reviews. Now I and many others expect the truth and you can just write it below my comment.
    What are all of the falsely advertised Yolobox Ultra Features that are buggy and do not work? What features were advertised that did not work that were fixed in later updates?
    What features are advertised for the Magewell Director Mini that do not work as advertised?
    Between Magwell and Yolobox what company is more truthful and honest about their advertised features?
    I have pitched and sold the Yolobox Ultra to very important clients. Now I have to return the Yolobox Ultra's and find an alternative product for my customers. What do you recommend? Does the Magewell Director Mini function as advertised and is it solid enough to sell to customers who will depend on the unit weekly for their personal brand and business reputation?
    Please advise? Regards, Tim
