2018 Volkswagen Atlas Review - Bigger than my Highlander

  • While other manufacturers have had a 3 row SUV for a long time, VW is just getting into the game with their New Atlas. This SUV is BIG. With tons of utility and features like a tilt/sliding second row for 3rd row access without removing a baby car seat, the Atlas should be a solid family performer in the years to come.

    Wow! My wife and I have twin boys that just turned 1. We have been researching 3 row suv's for quite sometime now. This presentation was literally made for my family. Mr. Chow is blessed with a beautiful family that reminds me alot of mine. The double stroller storage along with middle safety seat chairs being able to move forward is what really sells it for us. We have one of the best designed double strollers at the moment so now its time to compliment it with a well designed 3 row suv. Volkswagen needs to send Mr. Chow a nice commission check. We are ready to buy!!

    I love the size of this thing and the ease of getting in to the third row is a huge benefit for this Volkswagen product.

    Thanks for the demo with the car seat. Our family bought an Atlas as it fits three car seats in the middle row and don’t have to take them out to get into the back row. It is useful compared to others in its class for getting on the back with a car seat in place.

    I've never owned a VW but have fallen in love with this vehicle I also like the redesigned Tiguan. But this car is masculine and classy looking but VWs reliability, maintenance cost and resale are really killing my courage to ditch Japanese automobiles. I owned an 04 Audi A4 several years ago and just replacing 1 wiper blade cost $80.

    Buying a 3 row suv by the end of the year and my choices have been narrowed down to the VW Atlas SEL Premium and the Toyota Highland Limited Platinum. Among my main desires are a QUIET CABIN and a SMOOTH COMFORTABLE RIDE. Based off those two qualities, which would you choose? Thanks!

    • @EverydayReviews2022
      @EverydayReviews2022  7 років тому +1

      +Adam Simon Such a hard choice. I have the Highlander Hybrid and love the hybrid system. Perfect combo would be the Atlas in a hybrid or of course if it had the diesel which will never happen. The room and the folding /tilting second row blows away the Highlander. I think it'll come down to how
      Much room so you want. If you want big, go Atlas.

    If you spend more behind traffic lights, aka, city driving, highlander hybrid is the way to go. Period. forget how big this vehicle is. You can just putt he third row down. How often do you need to use them? Even in this video, he has no use of that third row seat with 2 kids. Toyota highlander hybrid takes it here.

    • @EverydayReviews2022
      @EverydayReviews2022  7 років тому +1

      +Raylor I agree but it depends on the stage of where your family is. I'm sure when my kids get to the age where I'll be hauling them and their friends around, third row room could really factor in.

    • @RobertTorres27
      @RobertTorres27 7 років тому

      At that point, though, a minivan would be the more practical choice. The cargo space in a minivan with the third row up puts any 3-row CUV/SUV to shame.

      Maikeli7: Motovlogger Since 2007 what did you trade up from? Also how is the power our family is in need of a 7 passenger suv and we do not want the regular go to SUVS as a new car like to be different ?? Anyway I’m weary about the fit and finish also the horsepower is lower than our now 2014 Edge Limited AWD.. rated at 285 HP I️ already feel as if our Edge needs more torque.. the Atlas makes a little more torque I️ believe .. how has it been for you?

    • @maikeli7
      @maikeli7 7 років тому

      aayonce4 I traded from a 2015 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. The power of the Atlas is not as torquey as the TDI, but it is sufficient, especially in sport mode. I’ve put 1000 miles on it now and still love it. 😊

    I'm trying to decide whether to get a highlander or an atlas right now. So you said you own a highlander. Are you going to trade it for an atlas? If so, please tell us why and if not, what is keeping you content with the highlander? Overall, the atlas seems like the better vehicle but a comparably equipped highlander is a little more affordable so I'm having a tough time making a decision. Thanks.

    • @EverydayReviews2022
      @EverydayReviews2022  7 років тому +5

      I am not going to trade in the Highlander for anything anytime soon. It still is a great vehicle. The Atlas has better utility with the size. The cargo area, the third row and the tilting second row is hands down better than the Highlander. As is the AWD system is way more advanced on the Atlas. The big thing that the Highlander has overt the Atlas is the availability of the Hybrid powertrain which is what I have. Just the amount of fuel saved in the last 4 years not from driving but from just sitting parked when the kids are sleeping in the car and you end up sitting there for an hour with either the heat or AC on. Now that I think of it, if I didn't want the Hybrid system, I'd probably go for the Atlas. Atlas also has a fully heated steering wheel and Apple CarPlay/Android auto as well which the Highlander doesn't have.

      I own a VW Atlas trend line with vr6 awd. I am extremely pleased with the driving dynamics cargo space very smooth quiet ride and even the fuel economy. I drive mostly highway miles and the best I have achieved was 8.4 liters per 100km or 27.5 mpg, (manually figured for best accuracy), while driving mostly in economy mode and coasting well in advance of stop signs and traffic lights. The start stop system is very seamless just like the silky smooth transmission, and it is NOT annoying whatsoever! It can be disabled with the push of a button but I have never disabled it since it saves you fuel. If you want better performance you need to get 18 inch wheels and not the 20 inch, I have 18 inch that is why the fuel economy is also better. I have found that using the tiptronic manual shift gives you the best 0-60 performance and is very satisfying. For whatever reason when you are using all the other automatic modes it is not as peppy but still more than sufficient. By adding the $900.00 (canadian) convenience package you get;
      . Alarm system
      · Aux input
      · Cargo cover
      · 8.0” touchscreen with proximity sensor, CD Player, 8 speakers, voice control, and 1 SD slot
      · Heated front seats and washer nozzles
      · SiriusXM Satelite Radio
      It also has sensors which detect excess rain that will automatically switch to high speed mode such as when a big rig drives past with a drenching deluge, I find this feature very convenient and safer than having to turn up the wiper speed manually. You can also manually change the steering wheel stiffness from sport to normal, I personally like it stiff.

    • @mikes1794
      @mikes1794 7 років тому +2

      hershp Your entitled to your opinion, however, the Atlas has had no serious issues as of yet and the engine is said to be bulletproof and the transmission is Japanese. I have more than 5000 km and have had literally zero issues!

    • @hershp
      @hershp 7 років тому +2

      Mike S it's great that you are happy with it. I'm just making a general comment regardless of brand. In my opinion, it is not worth to buy a first generation vehicle. Time and time out I've seen first generation vehicles eventually end up getting some sort of issues down the line. It does not have to be engne related.

    Would you recommend VW Atlas over Toyota Highlander...or even consider 2019 Kia Sorento? Thank you.

    • @EverydayReviews2022
      @EverydayReviews2022  7 років тому +1

      I Ramen For Life I would consider an Atlas over the Highlander for sure. It has more utility, if you have kids in child seats, the second row slide and tilt feature is invaluable for 3 rd row access. If you want to have a hybrid option though, you’re going to have to stick to the Highlander. Those would be my 2 picks.

    • @tuyhoaphuyen3412

      Thanks for a great review and I am really appreciated, but it is a tough decision for me cause I like Toyota Highlander with Toyota safety sense standard, reliability and I can only afford up to $38k price range. Right now, there is local Toyota dealer has an offer XLE model for $38,779 and VW dealer has Atlas SE model for $38k.

      Hard to say since it's so new. I'm happy with my Highlander but if I had to do it again, I might go with the Atlas. The second row is a winner for me, especially with car seats. So much more space than almost anything in its class. Truly a utility vehicle.

    The engine is seriously weak. Test drove one the other day, plus the drivers armrest is low as is center console. Other than that, its spacious and easy to access third row.

    • @Freeeeeeeedoooooooom
      @Freeeeeeeedoooooooom 5 років тому

      I completely disagree with the engine being weak on the V6 model anyway. I purchased the Atlas SE VR6 with technology and specifically tested it getting onto the freeway. Both my wife and I disagree with the number of reviewers saying this engine is weak. There is a lack of sensation of speed due to the vehicles size and also the lack of engine noise in the interior. The lack of power sentiment is a case of perception versus reality in my opinion. The intended market for this vehicle isn't interested in a sub 5 second 0-60 time. Is this vehicle more than adequate for merging on the freeway and doing your daily business. The answer is a resounding yes.
