The leopard gecko seems to be doing really well already, how would you say they're progressing considering training repetitions can, by nature of their food, be done many, many times in one session?
He learned to associate the target with reinforcement quickly, but so do the snakes. He is following it well in his enclosure, I need to set up more species appropriate stations so he can get out easier as I start asking him to do things outside of his enclosure.
Great Video! I just picked up my target last week and had my first feeding target session saturday. I'm still watching the videos but I'm having difficulty trying to figure out how to associate a potential future target for "you can come out of the enclosure." and generally positively enforce that outside of just having a positive out of enclosure experience. I want to be able to use my snake for future educational encounters to teach people snakes are not to be demonized for being seen. Hopefully as I progress through the videos I can find one that answers my problem (how to provide positive enforcement for a "you can come out" target). Thanks for the videos!
Generally, I wonder how does one provide positive enforcement outside of food for snakes? I feel like them leaving the enclosure is a positive enforcement they may not be able to associate with the target.
Many snakes and other reptiles find freedom reinforcing, so the experience of coming out of the enclosure and free roaming can be in itself reinforcing. You can also target them out and then allow free roaming after. You can target train once they are out and reinforce with food, or depending on the species you can set up foraging exercises for them. To pair a target with "freedom" or an opportunity to come out, choose a specific target to pair with the open door. Pair the target repeatedly with the open door and when the animals comes out allow free roaming, feed them, or set up something else they find reinforcing. I have a few videos about this. I can look for them and put the links in the comments.
I've done clicker training with pets since I was a kid. Target training looks like it's worth doing.
Have a great day Lori! Just wanted to tell you how amazing and awesome you are! :-) Thanks for all your knowledge!
Thank you.
