Airgun rat action with Terry Doe

- Where there are chickens there are usually rats. That’s bad news for the owner of the fancy fowl, but great news for Terry Doe, former Editor-in-Chief of Airgun World, who has a load of new kit to deal with our pest problem. Unfortunately the quality of the image through the Infiray day/night scope and thermal means we see more than just where to put the pellet, it gives us a dark insight into what these rats are happy to gnaw on... their friends and relations. Rats don't mind a bit of other rat for a protein-packed evening meal. Terry's efforts at the Bisley air rifle range pay off and nothing gets past him. However, the bucket load of rats we gather at the end doesn't tally with what we shot. Rat is definitely on the menu tonight.

Why shoot rats?
There are thought to be more than 10 million rats in the UK (…yuk).
Rats carry many diseases which can spread to humans, normally through their urine, including: leptospirosis or Weil's disease, salmonella, listeria, toxoplasma gondii and hantavirus.
Rodent contamination also presents a significant risk to livestock health. Both cattle and sheep will ingest a large proportion of faecal contamination (Daniels & Hutchings 2001).
Rats can also inflict structural damage. They can cause fires by gnawing away the insulation around electrical cables, floods by puncturing pipes and they chew through gas pipes. The insurance sector has estimated that rodent damage to wiring is responsible for 25% of all electrical fires in buildings.
Finally, rats can ruin an organisation's reputation. If clients and customers spot evidence of rodent infestation in the premises you manage, they are unlikely to want to do business with you.
