  • This is round 1 of the 2000 Chevy Trucks AMA Motocross Championship from Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, CA. This is the ONLY National from the year 2000 that I have.
    Returning 250cc contenders like 1999 runner-up Kevin Windham, '94 champ Mike LaRocco, Sebastien Tortelli, Larry Ward, 250cc Motocross rookie Ricky Carmichael, Damon Huffman, 1998 125cc runner-up John Dowd, 250cc rookie David Vuillemin, Tim Ferry, and defending champ Greg Albertyn battle it out for the 2000 Chevy Trucks 250cc AMA Motocross Championship. This is Ricky Carmichael and David Vuillemin's first full 250cc Motocross seasons after Carmichael dropped back down to the 125cc class for the Nationals in 1999, and Vuillemin kept returning to Europe for the Grand Prix series after Supercross concluded. Jeff Emig is sidelined for the 2000 Nationals due to a fractured leg and back injuries sustained before the Vegas Supercross finale, which lead to his eventual retirement. This race marks Greg Albertyn's first race with the #1 plate, and his first race back from a broken femur he sustained at the Atlanta Supercross almost 3 months ago. This race also marks Jeremy McGrath's only Motocross National of the 2000 season, and his last until Steel City 2004.
    Returning 125cc contenders like 1999 runner-up Brock Sellards, 125cc East SX champ Stephane Roncada, Nick Wey, Suzuki rookie Travis Pastrana, Michael Brandes, Nathan Ramsey, Kelly Smith, Ernesto Fonseca, 125cc West SX runner-up David Pingree, Casey Johnson, Casey Lytle, Tallon Vohland, 2-time champ Steve Lamson, Greg Schnell, KTM rookie Rodrig Thain, and Yamaha of Troy rookie Justin Buckelew battle it out for the 2000 Chevy Trucks 125cc AMA Motocross Championship. This race marks the pro motocross debuts for Travis Pastrana and Justin Buckelew. This race is well known for Michael Brandes' bad crash on the first lap in moto #2.
    Enjoy.

      You're very welcome. I miss the two-strokes just as much as the next person, but I do feel that the 250cc 2-stroke has lost a considerable amount of credibility in some series (mainly Canada's MX2 class).

      No disagreements -- Carmichael a 250 rookie wins the title, and Travis Pastrana comes from a 41-point deficit to rob Stephane Roncada of the 125 MX title.

      @@MathewVsSportsMediaandGames I have never been as fond of indoors as outdoors. Perhaps because I started racing before there was any indoors spectacles , and even before there was any real motocross here in USA. Started with TT racing at Prado park in Kawleefornya many moons ago and just quit in 2007 from a serious wreck that crippled me for 10 years ! I have raced indoors as well but definitely an old school die hard motocrosser. I made my first motorcycle/scooter out of an old bicycle frame and a lawn mower motor with a piece of string for a throttle, at age 9. Back then nobody worried about safe or helmets or whatever, just go have some fun ! I still live exactly the same way and always will. Been thinking about returning to racing again as I have healed myself and now stronger than ever !
      Later in the 70s we used to buy a new Yamaha DT1 and out a GYT kit in it and had the shit for sure ! About the same time as Hodakas and leading link front suspension was the hot setup. All got good after that and the Japanese revolution. No question todays 4 strokes track far better in the corners and throttle control not so critical. Todays MX machines are incredible and yes I had 4 strokes in 2007 and prior !

      I'm the opposite -- I cared more for Supercross than Motocross after McGrath went Supercross-only in 1999, and Carmichael's 10-year reign and career came to an end after 2007. I showed interest again in 2009 when Chad Reed won the title as a late entry, but after Chad fell off the radar in MX again after late 2011, I stopped caring for the outdoors.
      I raced a bit myself on a 60cc in 1998, but I skipped the 80cc class because I just wanted to ride for fun. I decided to try racing myself and went to 125cc Novice after I got out of high school in 2006. Unfortunately, I hurt my shoulder over 10 yrs. ago in January 2009 and I lost interest in racing. That's when I decided to just focus on living my life and getting through college and all. I only raced about 4 more times after that, but I doubt I'll ever race again -- especially since I made 31 YOA just about 3 weeks ago on February 16.

    the way the video starts out "Will Greg Albertyn be able to repeat his championship last year, or will the new kid on the block Ricky Carmichael carry over from the 125 class" LOL!!! yeah, Albertyn *NEVER* stood a *FRACTION OF A PERCENT OF A CHANCE* against RC

      DEM0N Well 2000 was pretty much Carmichael's rookie 250cc Motocross season, keep in mind. From what I heard, Albertyn hurt his knee at Hangtown and the pain was too much for him, even though he could compete in the races, which is why he announced 2000 would be his last season.

      When it was on SPEED and FOX Sports, they were a perfect fit (though FOX Sports did have a flaw here and there [i.e. a dog show that ran long on FS1]). I don't think Supercross is going back to ESPN2 unfortunately; when I saw the dismay fans showed when I saw the schedule on NBCSN, I began to agree that half the races are live and we gotta purchase NBC Gold to watch the races live. Unfortunately, when ESPN2 treated Supercross better by showing the races the next day (and not the MX broadcasts), it was kinda past the midnight hour in a way. I actually thought the coverage on SPEED was much better because the broadcasts were on at consistent times, though I didn't really like that they showed the 125cc/Lites broadcasts the following weekend until 2009 when SPEED showed both broadcasts back-to-back, and had at least 2-3 races LIVE.

      I wouldn't write Albertyn's championship season in 1999 off in any way. I think the title chase sort of ended when Sebastien Tortelli crashed out in the 2nd moto at Unadilla, but a title is a title no matter who's out there. Windham still had trouble finding his true speed, Carmichael was racing 125s, etc.

      MathewV21688 that’s why I watched this video. I was thinking “when did 4 strokes take over motocross?” It was in the early 2000s and watching this video with the large amount of 2 strokes and the odd ball 4 stroke is totally opposite what it is today. It’s amazing what 17 years can do. I’m a big fan of the simplicity of my 2 strokes but nothing beats the thump and power of my friends yz250f (except for a yz450, that is).

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  6 років тому

      I see. It was 2001 that the 250Fs were introduced via Yamaha, which I found to be fair in the sense of you don't have to be in the premiere class to ride a 4-stroke. I liked the sound of that 4-stroke when Henry rode it in 1998 (and the 1999 MX season) and Button in 1999.

      Was the yz400f the bike that started the transition from 2 stroke to 4 stroke?

    • @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames
      @MathewVsSportsMediaandGames  6 років тому

      My answer to that is "no". It was just the introduction via Doug Henry; my theory is the "transition" started when Honda debuted their CR450F in 2001 at Vegas when Heath Voss rode it, and Ryan Hughes rode the 450cc for the 2001 Nationals, before his season was cut short due to concussions.

That got it done thankfully but it still cost me $18,000 out of pocket, yeah it was bad. That's the worst thing and then all of the other stuff that comes with riding. But it's been well worth it! I think very few people (myself included) would've predicted RC would be the 250cc MX champ, and he proved everybody wrong. Besides, how many races did RC run in the 250cc class outdoors -- none! After seeing Leann Tweeden get a first-hand experience at Sebastien Tortelli's training program, Tortelli certainly proved to be a contender in Motocross, but after 2001, Carmichael got better and better, and in contrast, Tortelli couldn't stay away from crashes and "WTF" moments.
