Lophophora williamsii: Secret peyote cactus garden in the wild

- Join us as we explore a mountain full of cacti, featuring up to 10 different genera, and uncover the symbiotic relationships between cacti and other desert plants in the Potosí desert.
We’ll introduce you to Lophophora williamsii, a slow-growing cactus endemic to Mexico and the U.S. Unfortunately, there are now very few left in the U.S. due to habitat destruction and harvesting. Come along and get to know this beautiful plant that deserves our attention and protection.
Known as Peyote in northern Mexico, this plant has been used medicinally by pre-Hispanic cultures. Recently, it’s become the center of various pseudo-spiritual movements that are far removed from the cultures that originally discovered it.
We’ll also discuss the delicate balance between succulent plants in the desert and how they cooperate to survive together.
