I once met Cohen on the isle of Hydra close to Athens where he used to live with his Norwegian girlfriend Marianne... he was just walking along.. and I ... very shy.. asked him: Sorry are you Leonard Cohen?! and he answered, smiling; "I am afraid I am" ... I will never forget this... since then I love this great Canadian his music and his lyrics.... it is magic!
Late 1973. After hitchhiking during September and October 1972 , 10000 miles from Oklahoma to Cali and back to Brooklyn, my ex and I bought a 1967 Westfalia VW camper bus and traveled through Europe and North Africa. Ended up cleaning hotel rooms in Munich for US military. Had to sit on the aisle for his concert. We were the only Americans. A small intense crowd. Amazing 🤩
I was at LC's concert in Munich sometime in the '70s. Same one as you? I don't know. I remember it well because it was so beautiful, and a sweet little Canadian moment for two young women hitchhiking through Europe and feeling a little homesick. I also remember we were embarrassed because we were the only two people in the audience to give a standing ovation. I guess that wasn't a thing in Germany at the time.
Those were the days brother Jim. I am from North Africa and remember friend of mine travelled each summer to Europe with simple Interrail. Now it is as impossible as it get 😢😢.
The moment he pauses at 00:49 for a few seconds to hear himself the wonderful ladies doing amazing backup vocals and pay tribute to them. What a legend, what a gentleman, what an artist, what a wonderful human being!
Marianne was the love of his life. He wrote a beautiful letter that was read to her as she lay dying. She smiled and passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. She was 81 years old as is he. RIP Marianne!
In late July this year, Cohen received an e-mail from Jan Christian Mollestad, a close friend of Marianne’s, saying that she was suffering from cancer. {...} It appeared, she had only a few days left. Cohen wrote back immediately: "Well Marianne, it’s come to this time when we are really so old and our bodies are falling apart and I think I will follow you very soon. Know that I am so close behind you that if you stretch out your hand, I think you can reach mine. And you know that I’ve always loved you for your beauty and your wisdom, but I don’t need to say anything more about that because you know all about that. But now, I just want to wish you a very good journey. Goodbye old friend. Endless love, see you down the road." Two days later, Cohen got an e-mail from Norway: "Dear Leonard Marianne slept slowly out of this life yesterday evening. Totally at ease, surrounded by close friends. "Your letter came when she still could talk and laugh in full consciousness. When we read it aloud, she smiled as only Marianne can. She lifted her hand, when you said you were right behind, close enough to reach her. It gave her deep peace of mind that you knew her condition. And your blessing for the journey gave her extra strength. . . . In her last hour I held her hand and hummed “Bird on the Wire,” while she was breathing so lightly. And when we left the room, after her soul had flown out of the window for new adventures, we kissed her head and whispered your everlasting words. So long, Marianne . . ."

We were so blessed to be in the company of this man .. I laughed and cried and we stood at the end clapping and with tears we knew it was our last time to pray with him .... A beautiful soulful gentleman...
Thank you for a lifetime of memories, Maestro. You were a major part of my musical life for the past 50 years. Ups and downs were commemorated through your music. Even had a sweet encounter with your temper at Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, where, for some reason, you were in a very foul mood which only made the concert more memorable. You were ready to leave this earth and we thank you for what you left us - a lifetime of beautiful memories.
Never was exposed to Leonard Cohen growing up. He may not be operatic, but that misses the point. He is an Authentic Human with great heart and sensibility and that's infinitely better than 90% of the Fake. Glad for UA-cam. Stay steeped in the Authentic Human!
I was at one of the Dublin concerts, he was such a powerful performer - so connected to the audience, so much passion for his art. Still hard to believe he is gone when I watch and listen to him, an amazing musician.
No words good enough to describe this song and this version. It is on my constant repeat. The back up singers are heavenly and Leonard is the King, he is absolutely magical. The story behind the song is the best love story ever
Seeing Leonard live in Plymouth (UK) over 40 years ago was and remains one the most memorable moments of my life. For the second half of the show he stood alone on the stage with just a guitar, no backing singers or other musicians and held the audience spellbound in the palm of his hand.
The Music stopped and the levy was dry. I do not believe L. C. Is silent where he is right now. My prayer is he hears all people still stopping by to say 'one more song please.' And here, it can go on as long as we reach our children when they reach out for love, forever. The waters have to release him, cause he sure might drown in all the tears shared. I have an ocean behind my eyelids. Tks for the loving.
wasn't the world so blessed to hear what this man had to share - his wisdom , his voice , his music and of course his charm. What a joy and honour to see him in Dublin - his light will never fade.
I'm in hardships these days, can't find any other music to feed my soul except Leonard's songs. Absolutely brilliant man with exceptional voice and talent. so long great man, so long.

What is there not to like for certain people, specially those of the 60s in the USA, is that there is still an unconscious bias for echoes of "gospel" like in the choir and organ in this recording...This bias was of course part of the racial apartheid in music that existed in the USA in those days
I feel great pain for those like you who post condescending comments on UA-cam. Oh... this is a condescending comment as well. I guess nobody's perfect. :)

I play this beautiful song by all these amasing artists with leanard Cohen over and over again just wish Id have had the opportunity to have seen them live RIP

So long, God. You have been a refuge in hard times and an absolute source of joy in sunny days. I will carry you in my heart till I die and then beyond. Rest in music master. Much love.
I am so sad that I never got to see Leonard live! He has so much charm and sets a fire in his songs and performances that I have never seen in anyone else! You LIVE forever, Leonard! Thank you for your voice, performance and for sharing so much of yourself!
It is a testament of a great artist when they are humble. Hows lovely to see Mr. Cohen take his hat off when the violinist plays. He did it also when the keyboard player did the solo in Hallelujah.
It is closing time . The Future stands still. The grief, the shock ; I was not ready for this. I have lost an anchor that was a major part of my musical life for the past 20 years. His wry, self deprecating, tender verse chronicled the ups and downs of my life.
