I have supported many chem-ops facilities and that looks to me to be some sort of cracking tower that is sitting next to an old petroleum well...I don't think they are making Oxygen. Methane maybe but not OXY. Oxygen production needed here would involve a large, loud, multi-staged compressor system. I do love Mary's videos, without her we would have nothing.
@@jamieday7579 actually the starship has a really clean exhaust with only C02 and water vapor, C02 may sound bad, but most cars produce other gases as well like soot, these are directly bad for your health unlike C02 as well
@@jamieday7579 Look up the Sabatier process for methane production process. Even though Starship is a highly visible producer of CO2 it pales into a microscopic dot compared to the CO2 from powerplants, cars, and aircraft.
The old gas well where they are placing the LOX producer is a Methane well. When the gas company shuts down a well it’s because it is no longer capable of keeping pace with the demands of a continuous flow of gas to the gas network. The well should be sufficient, production wise, of supplying Starship needs. Free LOX and Methane!
That's what I thought, The white box next to the LIN/LOX fractionator is the cold box for the ASU. There's usually 2, one for the exchangers and the fractionation tower. Those two stubby vessel on their sides are mole sieves for removing CO2 and any water before you cool the air. If they have it set up right, they can also separate out argon for welding also.
I know the flight is near when another prototype is already waiting to fly too. And on a side note, two sunrises??? Thanks everybody from NSF!!! They're beautiful!!!

Watching those guys sweeping the concrete clean at the end, I wondered "If Cleetus McFarland could get a Zamboni to clean up the burnout pad, these folks should be able to get a top of the line unit for there....."
The LOX distiller makes sense, as they're using so much, and the LOX can just be pulled out of the air. The next step (though not as likely) is to manufacture CH4 locally, from CO2 and water, both of which are in good supply locally. But more expensive than buying. But it would be a good test of Mars equipment.
If it is an oxygen distiller, it refrigerates air to the point where the gaseous oxygen liquefies, then it can be separated and tanked for use in the rockets.
Two interesting things from the video. First, the strain gauges on the test tank. Hadn’t seen that in the previous test tanks. Lastly, the camera set up on the orbital launch pad for the launch and landing of SN9.
Looks like the test flight of SN9 has been postponed until at least Monday. 2 engine swaps need to be carried out along with more static fires. Gutted, bit at least they are making sure everything is tip top for a successful SN9 launch, flop and land.
What about a very large hand like extension that would grip the wing and it also swivels at the wrist to place it exactly where is supposed to go on the rocket.
Sadly, I think that if you got permission and permits to let it happen, there would be no shortage of folks happy to go for free, even if it meant death. People are so weird.
I kinda hope SN9 flies before roll out 10. Mainly cause I'm hoping SN9 goes super soon. Maybe SN10 and 11 will get to be first pair. Or even better if SN9 flies and then they put it back on launch mount to go again!

Is it just me or do the surfaces of the aero flaps look pretty wavy/janky? Seems like that is somewhat that shoul be much smoother like aero control surfaces (wings, flaps, aerilons etc,) even if they are just for resistance and not any kind of lift?
I don't think it's just you. It seems to be a fairly common thought. I doubt that it matters from a functional perspective though, and this is just a prototype. Also, I suspect that if they were painted matt white or black, they'd look awesomely smooth. Large areas of flat reflective surface are going to be near impossible to get looking smooth..
Looking forward to the next hop test for lift-off. If this next hop has a successful lift and then spots the landing, I hope SpaceX decides to go for space on the next starship to launch. Possible?

They did this 3 times in one day, which is a world record for SN9 and SpaceX. It shows how much they have learned and how confident they have become.
Some people was talking about 'test tanks', just like SN7. Anyway, all the pieces are interchangeable. Also, there's a talk about avoiding SN13, and one up and one down, just to be safe. After SN8 melting a engine, and SN9 leaning in the high bay, who knows? :)

I find the symbolism of putting the new LOX distiller at the old gas well site. The new 'fuel farm' is sitting on an old 'fuel farm.'

it s not a LOX Distille but a Moonshine Distille :-)

They need to put fairings over the plumbing/electrical lines on the fuselage
Remember: these are still prototypes. Fairings and such are only relevant when they go orbital, and have finished the prototyping.
Did spaceX fabricate the LOX machine themselves, or was it sourced from a vendor ? looks complex.
Just a side note. No mars missions is possible without a humble days work of a good ol' pick up
