Rat Proof Compost Bin! How to Make A Three Bay Compost Bin

  • I've been investing heavily in the infrastructure of the garden and smallholding lately, with my new greenhouse and the timber for raised beds purchased.
One thing I really wanted to up my game on was making compost. I'm fed up of rubbish peat-free compost being sold and want to produce so much more of my own. This three bay compost system will hopefully form part of the backbone of making the compost for growing our veg. The last few years I've just made piles of compost and it's never as good as having a compost bin.
The size is 3.6m long by 1.2 wide by 0.95m high. Since makign this video one bay is already full and the second is half full. I should be able to make loads in a year using it. Composting lots of weeds (it should get hot enough to kill weed seed), kitchen scraps, straw, hay and cardboard as well as the comfrey I have growing around my plot.
I loved building this, but know it is over engineered. The top bar on the front is probably something I'd try to design out if I was to make them again as I imagine it'll make turning the compost tricky in the future. Having that bar in does make it feel solid though, which I like.
    Thanks for watching!

Looks great. Sturdy. The mesh is so solid. Love the lid. And should last. I agree that sometime you need to spend to get the best results and longevity. Well done!

Yeah the mesh is amazing. So sturdy, really makes the whole thing feel strong. I've enjoyed filling this up, nothing wasted now.

I think that will last much longer than 10 years, given the use of slabs below, roof above, and heavy tannalised timber, well braced and joined.

I hope it does! I've already filled two bays, and keep topping them up. It was fun to make, but I'm in no hurry to make it again!

    Well Made !
Only reservation I have is depending on whether you are going to turn the Pile
    Which could be awkward
Looking forward to seeing how well the Design Works

Yeah, that top rail is my concern. I have figured out I could cut it away and bolt it on if it's a massive pain.

I’ve seen houses not even built half as good 👍🏼

Ah thanks you. As someone thatbworked on new build housing for a few years I'm honestly inclined to agree 🤣🤣 your comment did make me chuckle.

I built something very similar but I hinged the top rail. Mainly because I'm older and rounder than you😂😂
I also used lift off hinges on the doors, only because I had some on hand. In hindsight it was an excellent idea as it makes it a lot easier moving stuff between bays with no doors in the way.
Living in very rural Wales I really can understand your not wanting to drive to collect extra timber when you have stuff on hand. It's amazing how half a day can just vanish picking stuff up.

Yeah, I might regret that top rail I feel. Hinging it would have been a good idea. Maybe I'll build a mk2 at some point.
As for driving anywhere I really hate having to leave a job to get stuff. What's worst is I guessed I'd need 16 lenghts so got 20 (this is without working it out like I should have) and needed 22 really!

Will you kick start them? How will the worms get in with a concrete base?

    • @englishhomestead
      @englishhomestead  2 місяці тому +3

So the slabs have a 12mm (1/2") gap between them, down onto soil, so the worms will soon find their way in.
I've filled one and a half sections already. I've been layering it up, with a bale of straw to help with my "browns". To get it going I've also got 150 comfrey plants around my plot so every few layers I've added in a wheelbarrow full of comfrey. I can already feel heat off the first bay.

My bins are on a poured slab to keep tree roots out and they are full of worms. Just another old wives tale to ignore.

@michaelcatherwood4088 I'm inclined to agree. Someone was telling me about a compost bin in the middle of a carpark and how there was still worms in it when it came time to empty it.
