The IQ is Nextbase’s latest best dash cam for 2024 which brings the best tech from the smartest modern cars, so all drivers can enjoy safety and security when on the road or parked.
Thanks to Nextbase for providing the IQ for me to test for this video.
The IQ comes in 3 versions - 1k, 2k and 4k resolution and I’ve got the 2k here, as well as the optional 2k rear camera.
Unboxing the main camera, you can see that the IQ doesn’t look like any other dash cam that’s come before it. It’s got a camera module, with lenses facing outwards to the road and inwards to the passengers, and a large circular base, which is actually a speaker, with two 4g antennas and, on the reverse, a large sticky pad mount.
This dash cam doesn’t have a built-in battery and requires a constant power source, but luckily there are two ways you can power this dash cam so the majority of vehicles will be covered; an OBD-port connector and a hardwire kit.
And, if you’re wondering, yes the IQ will turn itself off if it detects the battery voltage getting too low, with Nextbase saying “it is expected that a vehicle can be left for approximately 6 days before the voltage drops too low” for the IQ to stay on.
The protruding lens is the outward facing lens that records the road in front of the vehicle, and it films with a 140 degree viewing angle. The flatter lens is the inward-facing cabin camera which has a 180 degree filming angle and the added bonus of infrared Both of these lenses record at 2k resolution.
One thing you may have noticed about the IQ is that there isn’t much in the way of a screen, like you might be used to with other dash cams. And that’s because you can view all of your footage, whether live or recorded, on the Nextbase IQ app, as well as changing the dash cam’s settings…plus it will send you notifications about the status of your vehicle.
The optional rear camera is quite a bit smaller than the front camera and there is only one resolution it comes in - 2k - and like the road-view lens, it has a 140 filming angle.
So what makes the IQ stand apart from other dash cams and competitors? In a word, technology. Nextbase reckon the IQ is the world's first truly Smart Dash Cam, as it's packed with lots of safety features and technology.

I've had the 4k version from release in November as well as the rear camera when it was released. It has come along way since and as of today Guardian Mode was released in the last update.. I can't wait for roadwatch ai.. it is expensive and the top subscription is also but it is worth it in my opinion.. I am always remote checking in on the car when left in car parks.. it took a while too get my settings right but now it's 👌 would I recommend it.. definitely..
When you showed the iq vid vs the 622gw i thought the vid ob the 622gw was better? I can see it obscuring alot of people's windscreen's due to its size!! I agree it has some cool feature's but im still not 100% sold on it 🤷♂️
This is the camera i really want hoping to get it by the end of the year or on farthers day.
Would you recommend this product or wait till more releases come to get rid of the bugs? I was also concerned the actual dash cam would be a target to break into your car and steal it?
Hi, yes I'm really happy with mine. The latest firmware update has cleared up the last of the issues for me and it works perfectly now. That's an interesting point, I don't live in a high crime area but I suppose if someone wants to steal something they will - at least you'll catch them on camera!
Good review, finally got my replacement after fighting with customer service on amazon AND direct, both told me to contact one other lol.
Mine stopped working only after 3 months, did some researching and could find 3 others that had that happen too, only who I know about and found online, so who knows how reliable this actually is, def dont look forward to testing it in the heat after it randomly died in the spring (yes, it took me 2 months of back and forth to get a warranty replacement). If it wasnt so expensive, I would have just taken the L, but its 4 months worth of filling my car up with gas, so you know I at least wanted a 2nd try with this but i honestly was ready to buy a cheaper one, but from a better known brand lol
Hello, I have the 522GW and I’m thinking of getting the IQ now, my only issue is with the 522gw I have a stop start car so camera keeps restarting whenever the engine goes into eco mode and restarts, I’ve tried asking re constant power and was told wasn’t possible and stop/start shouldn’t be an issue. Am I correct in assuming this is a constant power feed, as in video you said it switches off when engine is switched off ? Also in emergency situations I’ve found the 522gw only does 5 seconds before incident instead of the previous 30 seconds on earlier models? What’s the accident / save incident timeframe before and after incident ?

So I've had a look at my iQ and, whilst I don't have a stop/start vehicle, what I've noticed is that if I was to stop for a while (i.e. minutes) with the engine on it goes into parking mode, which I assume it would with a start/stop car, however when I drive off the dash cam starts recording again. It's not like traditional dash cams where it's either on or off - it will detect things going on around you even if it says it's in parking mode. You'd have to ask Nextbase about the timeframe for accidents, I've looked through the manual but can't see the information. Hope that's helps
Obviously vehicle dependent, but if your car has a switched fuse for your cigarette lighter, wire it into that as your cigarette lighter doesn’t turn off when your car stops due to stop start

Why on earth do we need to install yet another OBD cable why can we not use the cable from the 622gw camera. The cable and plug for this is MASSIVE!
I don't know why they've done this, one to ask Nextbase about! My 622GW used a USB or 12v port so it's nice to have OBD option to free up a port, and you really don't see the cable or plug when it's in use as the majority of it is hidden.
It’s too big for my windshield. The rear cam is questionable at most times. Subscrtion is stupid, but you’re basically paying for 4g service and is nice to have. If it wasn’t so big, I’d keep it, but it’s on eBay
That's fair enough, it is a bit bigger than other dash cams. I've heard that they've fixed the rear cam issues in the latest firmware update - mine didn't always connect but is working perfectly now.
