  • My walk along the Sussex Border continues. The last I was in Selsey. I am not a little further west and inland at Earnley, a tiny hamlet that dates back to Saxon times.
    I am in search of what England means to me. Others will have another concept of this country and that is for them. These videos are about My England.

    I'm continuously amazed at how wonderfully picturesque Britain is. I think so many people have a mental image of England as London or the areas around London and don't ever get to see all the beautiful small towns and villages and the open countryside.

      I know, I live in Western Australia. Australians go to the UK with a list of things to see and tick off. They do not have a culture that involves walking through fields, visiting villages, pubs and churches.
      Their farmland is all privatised, it's a mental blank they pass through it and have a mind set that only wilderness is attractive.
      Settlements are often hundreds of kilometres apart.
      England I find is particularly stunning because it is so sheltered and rich in detail and variety.
      I always think it improves with a nice spot of Vaughan Williams too;

    Medmerry Park was New Beach Holiday Camp when I was a child. We had access through there to get to the beach. Used to cycle there and had the whole place to ourselves as the holiday makers never went further than the first breakwater!!

    Absolutely fantastic! You nailed it Richard! Some good views of the church - and our house beside it!! The weather couldn't have been better as you strolled down Drove Lane to the beach, and I remember the Friesian herd walking that lane between the two halves of Manor Farm to different meadows, and dad farming the fields. I work in Guildford now but Earnley will always be my home! (I spent the first 19 weeks of the 1st Lockdown walking those fields daily as it started whilst visiting parents so I was 'stranded' - thankfully in Earnley!!)

    Absolutely beautiful stunning scenery Britain is so beautiful and of all the shows that I've seen recently and during covid-19 I've seen a bunch on foreign places I sign this one of the best thank you Richard. From Bakersfield California USA. Where it will be 95* and sunny tomorrow April 30th.

      Some years back we went on a fly-drive holiday around California.
      Driving east from Bakersfield I was just knocked-out by the change in the landscape - the rocks and scenery I'd seen in so many westerns.
      Then to Olancha, past dried-out Owens Lake and on to Death Valley.
      Just Stunning...

    Great Explorations! I have walked past that church on several occasions in previous times after getting off the bus at East Wittering and going for walks on Medmerry but never gone inside. Strange to see a church without the pews. It was a bit of a trip down memory lane for you too at times. Beautiful scenes brought to us by your photography skills and film making expertise. A thoroughly enjoyable episode of your Sussex Border series. Thank you!

    People generally dont like change Richard, until it becomes the 'old and established'. I imagine the phrase that new builds all look the same has been uttered for 1000's of years just as Chopin's parents probably thought that his new wave music would never last! ;)

    I live in West Sussex and the countryside is beautiful. I've enjoyed rambling in it for years. At present I'm deeply concerned over all the houses that's been built, are currently being built and bids by housing firms to build thousands more. They seem determined to destroy vast areas of the beautiful countryside due to their addiction to the revenue metric. A destructive obsession with sales revenue that is also destructive for the environment. It's good more and more people are campaigning to put a stop to it. It would be interesting to see the bald explorer visit areas he's walked around before to see how much has changed. There are several areas near where I live that I've enjoyed rambling through many times before that are now housing estates or are soon to be so.

    • @martinkavanagh9641
      @martinkavanagh9641 3 роки тому

      The "revenue metric"? What an insular viewpoint - how about you consider the tens of thousands of British folk seeking homes for their children .. that benefit from these new constructions? - perhaps you would prefer that multi-level dungeons be dug under the inflammable city towers to incarcerate them?

    I've not been down that way for a while but I do remember Earnley Bird Gardens where there were butterflies flying about, don't know if they still exist. Lovely old church too. I've seen Medmerry park advertised now I can see where it is. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of where you were walking was covered by the sea years ago. Thank you Richard, where are you off to next?

  • @marksadventures3889

    You can eat the gorse flowers Richard. I don't get intimidated by the signs, I see them as a mark of fear by those who wall themselves in, people imprisoning themselves out of fear of loss or intrusion. Crime is bad true, but we shouldn't let it rule our lives. While you're in fear though you're easier to manage like a dog herds sheep. Last night I spent a few hours under the stars, it was a bit chilly, but I was wrapped up warm. This morning was cool but bright and wonderful.
