The main thing I miss about the old NBA is the fact that players used to actually respect the FANS. Both Kobe and MJ have stated in interviews that they tried to play all 82 games for the fans who have to save up for tickets and only get to go to a handful of games, or maybe just that one game. I believe one of the worst changes to the NBA was how they let the players demand trades and come into the league as superstars (without having proven themselves). Zion has been an embarassment with his lack of work ethic, sense of entitlement, and such. Not to mention, the flopping is over the top and is far more out of hand than ever before. Players carrying and traveling is cringy to watch now too. Players get away with it whenever they want. Refs control the pace of the game by calling fouls whenever they feel like it, while letting things slide for their favorite players as role players get called for even touching a superstar. EDIT: I do enjoy some of the new NBA, but it is indeed frustrating compared to the old days.
I can't watch the NBA anymore with all the carrying, traveling, and flopping. ESPECIALLY all the carrying and traveling. You guys are PROFESSIONALS! Play like it and actually use the fundamental concepts that make basketball basketball! Hell, my basketball coaches in elementary and middle school would've made the team run laps around the school over and over if they saw us deliberately carrying and traveling to play the game. And if I wanted to watch people flop, I'd just watch soccer.
This is what makes Kobe's scoring feats so crazy. Just look at the scoring and pace in the 2000s. Also the buddy buddy stuff .... Kobe showed everyone what's up when he ran through Pau's chest.

They worked on post and drive fundamentals. No stupid crossovers that take your stamina away and are 80% carry violations. Explosive first step and powerful but graceful finishing in the rim. Today there is a lot of soft contact fouls, continuous uncontested PnR and shooting bricks and airballs all night long until someone gets it going
one key element about the game that none of these type chs touch on is the fact that since the new commissioner the overall aggressiveness of the game has been gutted utterly... ppl focus on the surface and see that old school was better and more competitive buy why?? The old school ball was more appealing to me. I wasn’t alive for back then and the past era’s. Defense was actually matters and 3’s were more exciting because less frequent.
More balance and differing play styles. It's always been a copy cat league, but there were teams that shot the 3 more, or run n gun more while others posted up inside-out more. Pick n roll heavy teams. Big bruising "im gonna slow you down so the first team to 80 wins" teams. I used to love watching Reggie as much as Steph today, b/c those guys should be shooting from 3 that much but they also play off ball and running around all game long. It's fun watching that activity and they also hit middies and attacked. If i had to watch Mark Jackson or Bill Cartwright launch 10 3's a game and all the best scorers shoot 3s and make open layups in open lanes with barely any resistance under the basket, i would have been bored with it as much as today. IDC that Embiid can play like an oversized guard, he should play 3/4 of his game bruising and beating people in the post and learning how to dish it out of doubles to shooters or cutters like every great big had to learn. Then he wouldn't fade away in big playoff series b/c when the shot doesn't fall, you're just a soft giant, the same way people used to make fun of soft Euros. Yet the Euros are now tougher than the Americans. I'm not all completely for going back to the old ways. Watching catch and shoot shooters only take little mid range jumpers. No thanks. Get your ass behind the 3pt line for spacing. I wish we had a true Center, and various teams of 2 SFs or 1 PF and 1 SF. And various teams of 2x sg's or 2x pg's or traditional 1 pg and 1 sg. It creates for differing play styles and matchups. A traditional PF like Otis Thorpe or Buck Williams vs a SF playing PF like Rashard Lewis stretching the floor. If that makes sense. These days it feels like 3x SF's and 2x SG's on every roster and the biggest teams have a traditional PF at C. Denver has a real 5, a real 4, a real 3 and 2 sg's and it's fun to watch.

Player empowerment is great, but I think Silver having too loose of a collar and a pretty long leash on a lot of the top talents that aren't willing to perform on the court and give their all if they don't get what they want has led to the many problems the NBA has today. Silver has done well in trying to adapt to the NBA, but at the end of the day the NBA is an entertainment product, and should stay that way. Stern knew that, and he wasn't the perfect commissioner, but he laid all the groundwork and made strong foundations for the league we enjoy today, but under Silver the building is expanding greatly and the foundation (the product of elite HIGH-EFFORT basketball for fans to watch each game, especially for PAYING fans who pay to watch either in-person in order to see great games without players sitting out or giving low effort and heart) is starting to crumble underneath the pressure without most noticing.
We are noticing. Today's players, GMs and owners are wimps. They've handcuffed the defenses, sanctioned load management and allowed organisation to become rudderless. Like the banks, the players have become too big to discipline.

Physicality and the possibility of fights made it a team league in the 80s and 90s. The star needed his 12th guy back then. Today it is a class league. Players mix with the same class of player on the other team more than other-class players on their own. Softness killed colors.
Players today may be more skilled at individual skills WITH THE BALL, but part of the reason is they are ALLOWED to manipulate the way they dribble, pivot, and most importantly, the CONTINUATION step has been opened up for anyone to interpret, since even Allen Iverson says a step back the way Harden does, would have been called a travel. It would have. That is not getting down on Harden, it is not even about him, but about the way the game is called. Remember, James Harden tailored his game for the refs to maximize efficiency, and it was brilliant
I never thought I’d be someone who still plays basketball. That is not really interested in the product at the highest level. I love basketball but the nba at the moment I could care less about. Agreed. Haven’t watched a full game today since KD went off in game 7 against the Bucks. The only reason I watched that was bc I was at a bar & they had it on, prior to that I hadn’t sat down & watched a full game until the 2016 Finals. The NBA is extremely boring, I never keep up with records, stat leaders or anything now like I use to when I was grade school, middle school & high school. The only sports I watch now is the NFL, NCAAF & MLB.
Those were phenomenal offensive teams. The Lakers, Mavs, 7 seconds or less SUNS, Sonics, even lower scoring teams were not always necessarily bad offensively, at all. They were simply playing at a slow pace in part due to the fact the DEFENSE was primarily concerned with STOPPING the FAST BREAK. This was a natural reaction to the Showtime Lakers and most pinpoint it to the Isaiah Thomas-led Pistons who did manage to dethrone Magic and co. The Bulls had to overcome the Pistons and thus made it even more difficult to score with ease, knowing they had the game changer in Jordan who could not be shut down 5:10
Don't forget that Magic and B. Scott were injured for most of that Detroit Series. Yeah, I know, injuries are part of the game, but the Lakers had swept their way into the Finals and Magic was MVP of that regular season.

I remember back in the late 80's, Michael Jordan was a consistent 30 plus point scorer and it was incredible to watch. If you were able to score 27 or 28 in a game, you were considered elite. Low to mid 20's was the norm. Honestly, when you talk about play, today's NBA is a joke. Might as well tell the players defense is not allowed.

Why aren't more people boycotting the NBA? It's been unwatchable since Durant went to the Warriors (only the 2019 finals was any decent) I watched the Knicks Easter 2012 game again a while ago and was very impressed with how both teams played on both sides of the ball (Knicks will never be able to replace Melo and JR for me, and the 2012-13 team knew how to shoot the 3 pointer strategically rather than just walking up the court and bricking shots)

Everyone wants to shoot 3s including the big man instead of trying to score in paint consistently. It's why I like nikola jokic because he plays the old school way of playing basketball. He is not afraid to score inside the paint, the issues I have is that players flop too much and complain too much about almost every call. The players these days are not held accountable and are not benched whenever they make dumb decisions on the court. Trying to jack up 3 pointers too early in the shot clock, playing too much iso ball with 3 point shots being shot towards to end of shot the clock, not enough ball movement, too many low percentage 3 point shots. They are players that are left wide open in the paint and most of the players would rather settle for a 3 pointer instead of trying to draw a foul and get the defender in foul trouble. Hardly anyone gets fouled out anymore. For example, when bones hyland used to play for the denver nuggets, he used to dribble the ball too much in iso situations, than he would settle for a 3 pointer when it's closer to the shot clock throw the ball unnecessarily which leads to turnovers, these mistakes happen to much and it makes the defense too predictable and it makes team offense stagnant. Bones hyland would end up having games with too many bad shooting nights and was not consistent, he hardly drove to the basket and would rather settle for the long distance 3 point shot and he ends up living or dying by the 3. It would frustrate me when watching him play. Back than if players did these things they would get benched and they would need to earn there minutes in order to play. The coaching staff was very disciplined when coaching there players and nowadays players do whatever they want to do but it ends up costing them the game whether it ends up with a win or a loss and most likely a loss. I'm a detroit pistons fan and larry brown was my favorite coach back in 2004 because he was very disciplined with his players because he wanted to get the best out the players he coached. Larry brown was very tough on his players because he cared so much about teaching his players to the best of there abilities and trying to win. Hand checking needs to come back since players hardly put any effort on defense and most of the effort is done on the offense side instead of both sides of the the ball. I miss the 2004 detroit pistons when they tried to hold teams under 70 points. I got really excited and entertained when it was a grind it out game because of the competitive nature of the game when the games were close.
The players don't care about the fans the way players in previous eras did. Many star players find the fans to be "annoying" because now they have direct access to player's Twitter and IG accounts. That doesn't always work out well for thin-skinned superstars like LeBron, KD, and Embiid.
Excessive player movement among the top tier has basically eliminated rivalries. The NBA should be concerned about this, and it is not just the players, it is also the FRONT OFFICES that are at fault 8:40

These rules changes was made so that there would be more scoring. The NBA thought that it scoring would bring excitement to the game, therefore lift up a failing league. But I think us old heads really loved the grind of the 80’ and 90’.

The effort is not always there as well or does not seem like it as it did in the 80s , 90s, and 00's. Players take so many days off and plays off. Jordan never did, alot of top players back then did not. They also didn't leave to make "super teams" they wanted to beat eachother.
The 3pt line is the new in the paint. Teams are constantly shooting for 3 pointers and there is no action under the boards because the whole team is standing at the 3 point line.
The league has dig its own grave by over inflating prospects and paying them in advance over abstract metrics that dont mean sh1t when it comes to actually stepping up in the court. Thats why its becoming more and more usual to see dudes getting massive rookie deals and then they just dont play.. or they feel like they dont need to improve. Not everyone has pride in what they do like Kobe and MJ and perform to the best of their capabilities night in and night out on both ends. 80s basketball was better because there was more variety on the offensive side of the ball: low post mid range, long range, guys actually running to the rim on fast breaks... etc. Today’s basketball is just a 3 point shooting contest. Very boring.
It's the same situation at any job when some people are overpaid to do something easy. At some point the money will surpass the desire to win championships and receive accolades . A player has no insensitive to earn the money once the contract is signed he just has to stay healthy for the duration of that contract. . Do that 2 or 3 times a year your average NBA players career would leave the NBA and still be set for life, just make a few all stars teams and you are getting a max contract at some point. I mean why would they care look at Ben Simmons his money is in the bank regardless... If he leaves basketball right now his whole family is set for life..
Imagine how old school athletes feel, when all their records are being shattered left and right. I love how players today flex after every dunk and made bucket like they actually had to go through a gauntlet to score that bucket. The nba product has become a joke! The regular season mattered (kind of goes along with load management) is by far the biggest difference for me. The increased scoring where there's a 40 point game every night is another issue along with teams barfing up 50 3 pointers per game but we used to look forward to the biggest regular season matchups as predictors for the playoffs. Now, those matchups are often used as rest days and it's so rare both teams are trying their hardest on the same night.
Load menagement is a big problem, but you can say if you watch a jmx hy roller video, that these rookies or player that came to the league in todays nba have more mileage than ever, basically they are full pro with gym, workouts and so on, since the highschool if you have such a mileage at 19/20 years old you have basically 7 years or so at pro level, like a 27/28 year old in the old school basketball with a big difference in the body, combined with todays speed of play the injuries are inevitable, to prevent them you have an abuse of load menagement, i love your videos, they are like fresh air to the basketball community keep it up man
Adam Silver has watered the game down, eschewing defense for run and gun offense, because he thinks that all the fans would rather see teams scoring 150 pts per game. Crazy. In many ways, he has ruined the game. It actually started with David Stern though, when he stopped hand checking in the 90's. I recall Anthony Mason saying that the defensive rules had become so soft, that the players might as well use skirts for uniforms.
The players can take a lot of blame for the state of the league, but i thunk the most pivotal moment of the last 20 years was the malice at the palace in '04'. The league got scared because a fan who should have gotten swung on actually did when he threw a beer at a player. Instead of setting better standards for the fans they punished the players and got rid of the tough defense.
It's purely about the spectacle these days. They want as many highlight reel moments per game as possible, because that's what gets the dopamine flowing.
Question: bigger stronger faster doesn’t mean better games. 4 of the lowest rated finals since 1998 (the highest ever)are in the last 5 years. 80% of those ratings have disappeared. So why aren’t people watching this epic era of super athletic players??? Why aren’t people tuning in, WHY???
They changed some rules systematized the game into a fast paced volume offence less defense more three's less midrange and post up to give way to more highlights and pretty looking plays making it more of a three point shootout and uncontested dunk show rather than a truly competitive and complete basketball

The players in the NBA don't want to play defense. The three point shot is proof. A lot of the shots aren't defended. You shoot with no one near you. The players barely guard each other.

Sat court side at a Mavs game last week. It was a hard 75% effort level overall. Terrible effort from both teams. Felt bad for coaches. Pickup game YMCA w 7 footers. Terrible
Easy to solve. Make money the incentive to win. Players get half their contract gaurenteed. The higher you rank in standings at the end of the year, the more of that contract you make, with the farther you go in the playoffs. The more money you make, with the championship team being the only one to make full money. Guess who’s playing defense every night putting in effort, not sitting out games, and hating their opponents on the floor starting up rivalries again. If you don’t try on defense or sit out, your own teammates will hate you, because you are taking money out of their pocket.
The NBA thinks this style of basketball generates the most revenue and is attractive to the greatest number of people. Money talks and the NBA is foremost a business

The old school ball was more appealing to me. I wasn’t alive for back then and the past era’s. Defense was actually matters and 3’s were more exciting because less frequent.
More balance and differing play styles. It's always been a copy cat league, but there were teams that shot the 3 more, or run n gun more while others posted up inside-out more. Pick n roll heavy teams. Big bruising "im gonna slow you down so the first team to 80 wins" teams.
I used to love watching Reggie as much as Steph today, b/c those guys should be shooting from 3 that much but they also play off ball and running around all game long. It's fun watching that activity and they also hit middies and attacked.
If i had to watch Mark Jackson or Bill Cartwright launch 10 3's a game and all the best scorers shoot 3s and make open layups in open lanes with barely any resistance under the basket, i would have been bored with it as much as today. IDC that Embiid can play like an oversized guard, he should play 3/4 of his game bruising and beating people in the post and learning how to dish it out of doubles to shooters or cutters like every great big had to learn. Then he wouldn't fade away in big playoff series b/c when the shot doesn't fall, you're just a soft giant, the same way people used to make fun of soft Euros. Yet the Euros are now tougher than the Americans.
I'm not all completely for going back to the old ways. Watching catch and shoot shooters only take little mid range jumpers. No thanks. Get your ass behind the 3pt line for spacing.
I wish we had a true Center, and various teams of 2 SFs or 1 PF and 1 SF. And various teams of 2x sg's or 2x pg's or traditional 1 pg and 1 sg. It creates for differing play styles and matchups. A traditional PF like Otis Thorpe or Buck Williams vs a SF playing PF like Rashard Lewis stretching the floor. If that makes sense.
These days it feels like 3x SF's and 2x SG's on every roster and the biggest teams have a traditional PF at C. Denver has a real 5, a real 4, a real 3 and 2 sg's and it's fun to watch.

Player empowerment is great, but I think Silver having too loose of a collar and a pretty long leash on a lot of the top talents that aren't willing to perform on the court and give their all if they don't get what they want has led to the many problems the NBA has today. Silver has done well in trying to adapt to the NBA, but at the end of the day the NBA is an entertainment product, and should stay that way. Stern knew that, and he wasn't the perfect commissioner, but he laid all the groundwork and made strong foundations for the league we enjoy today, but under Silver the building is expanding greatly and the foundation (the product of elite HIGH-EFFORT basketball for fans to watch each game, especially for PAYING fans who pay to watch either in-person in order to see great games without players sitting out or giving low effort and heart) is starting to crumble underneath the pressure without most noticing.

Physicality and the possibility of fights made it a team league in the 80s and 90s. The star needed his 12th guy back then. Today it is a class league. Players mix with the same class of player on the other team more than other-class players on their own. Softness killed colors.

Players today may be more skilled at individual skills WITH THE BALL, but part of the reason is they are ALLOWED to manipulate the way they dribble, pivot, and most importantly, the CONTINUATION step has been opened up for anyone to interpret, since even Allen Iverson says a step back the way Harden does, would have been called a travel. It would have. That is not getting down on Harden, it is not even about him, but about the way the game is called. Remember, James Harden tailored his game for the refs to maximize efficiency, and it was brilliant

I never thought I’d be someone who still plays basketball. That is not really interested in the product at the highest level. I love basketball but the nba at the moment I could care less about. From the lack of defense , the mid season tournament, the play in tournament, the take foul. Agreed. Haven’t watched a full game today since KD went off in game 7 against the Bucks. The only reason I watched that was bc I was at a bar & they had it on, prior to that I hadn’t sat down & watched a full game until the 2016 Finals. The NBA is extremely boring, I never keep up with records, stat leaders or anything now like I use to when I was grade school, middle school & high school. The only sports I watch now is the NFL, NCAAF & MLB.

Those were phenomenal offensive teams. The Lakers, Mavs, 7 seconds or less SUNS, Sonics, even lower scoring teams were not always necessarily bad offensively, at all. They were simply playing at a slow pace in part due to the fact the DEFENSE was primarily concerned with STOPPING the FAST BREAK. This was a natural reaction to the Showtime Lakers and most pinpoint it to the Isaiah Thomas-led Pistons who did manage to dethrone Magic and co. The Bulls had to overcome the Pistons and thus made it even more difficult to score with ease, knowing they had the game changer in Jordan who could not be shut down 5:10
Don't forget that Magic and B. Scott were injured for most of that Detroit Series. Yeah, I know, injuries are part of the game, but the Lakers had swept their way into the Finals and Magic was MVP of that regular season.

I remember back in the late 80's, Michael Jordan was a consistent 30 plus point scorer and it was incredible to watch. If you were able to score 27 or 28 in a game, you were considered elite. Low to mid 20's was the norm. Honestly, when you talk about play, today's NBA is a joke. Might as well tell the players defense is not allowed.

I watched the Knicks Easter 2012 game again a while ago and was very impressed with how both teams played on both sides of the ball (Knicks will never be able to replace Melo and JR for me, and the 2012-13 team knew how to shoot the 3 pointer strategically rather than just walking up the court and bricking shots)

Everyone wants to shoot 3s including the big man instead of trying to score in paint consistently. It's why I like nikola jokic because he plays the old school way of playing basketball. He is not afraid to score inside the paint, the issues I have is that players flop too much and complain too much about almost every call. The players these days are not held accountable and are not benched whenever they make dumb decisions on the court. Trying to jack up 3 pointers too early in the shot clock, playing too much iso ball with 3 point shots being shot towards to end of shot the clock, not enough ball movement, too many low percentage 3 point shots. They are players that are left wide open in the paint and most of the players would rather settle for a 3 pointer instead of trying to draw a foul and get the defender in foul trouble. Hardly anyone gets fouled out anymore. For example, when bones hyland used to play for the denver nuggets, he used to dribble the ball too much in iso situations, than he would settle for a 3 pointer when it's closer to the shot clock throw the ball unnecessarily which leads to turnovers, these mistakes happen to much and it makes the defense too predictable and it makes team offense stagnant. Bones hyland would end up having games with too many bad shooting nights and was not consistent, he hardly drove to the basket and would rather settle for the long distance 3 point shot and he ends up living or dying by the 3. It would frustrate me when watching him play. Back than if players did these things they would get benched and they would need to earn there minutes in order to play. The coaching staff was very disciplined when coaching there players and nowadays players do whatever they want to do but it ends up costing them the game whether it ends up with a win or a loss and most likely a loss. I'm a detroit pistons fan and larry brown was my favorite coach back in 2004 because he was very disciplined with his players because he wanted to get the best out the players he coached. Larry brown was very tough on his players because he cared so much about teaching his players to the best of there abilities and trying to win. Hand checking needs to come back since players hardly put any effort on defense and most of the effort is done on the offense side instead of both sides of the the ball. I miss the 2004 detroit pistons when they tried to hold teams under 70 points. I got really excited and entertained when it was a grind it out game because of the competitive nature of the game when the games were close.
The players don't care about the fans the way players in previous eras did. Many star players find the fans to be "annoying" because now they have direct access to player's Twitter and IG accounts. That doesn't always work out well for thin-skinned superstars like LeBron, KD, and Embiid.

These rules changes was made so that there would be more scoring. The NBA thought that it scoring would bring excitement to the game, therefore lift up a failing league. But I think us old heads really loved the grind of the 80’ and 90’.

The effort is not always there as well or does not seem like it as it did in the 80s , 90s, and 00's. Players take so many days off and plays off. Jordan never did, alot of top players back then did not. They also didn't leave to make "super teams" they wanted to beat eachother.

The 3pt line is the new in the paint. Teams are constantly shooting for 3 pointers and there is no action under the boards because the whole team is standing at the 3 point line.

80s basketball was better because there was more variety on the offensive side of the ball: low post mid range, long range, guys actually running to the rim on fast breaks... etc. Today’s basketball is just a 3 point shooting contest. Very boring.

It's the same situation at any job when some people are overpaid to do something easy. At some point the money will surpass the desire to win championships and receive accolades . A player has no insensitive to earn the money once the contract is signed he just has to stay healthy for the duration of that contract. . Do that 2 or 3 times a year your average NBA players career would leave the NBA and still be set for life, just make a few all stars teams and you are getting a max contract at some point. I mean why would they care look at Ben Simmons his money is in the bank regardless... If he leaves basketball right now his whole family is set for life..

The regular season mattered (kind of goes along with load management) is by far the biggest difference for me. The increased scoring where there's a 40 point game every night is another issue along with teams barfing up 50 3 pointers per game but we used to look forward to the biggest regular season matchups as predictors for the playoffs. Now, those matchups are often used as rest days and it's so rare both teams are trying their hardest on the same night.

Load menagement is a big problem, but you can say if you watch a jmx hy roller video, that these rookies or player that came to the league in todays nba have more mileage than ever, basically they are full pro with gym, workouts and so on, since the highschool if you have such a mileage at 19/20 years old you have basically 7 years or so at pro level, like a 27/28 year old in the old school basketball with a big difference in the body, combined with todays speed of play the injuries are inevitable, to prevent them you have an abuse of load menagement, i love your videos, they are like fresh air to the basketball community keep it up man
Adam Silver has watered the game down, eschewing defense for run and gun offense, because he thinks that all the fans would rather see teams scoring 150 pts per game. Crazy. In many ways, he has ruined the game. It actually started with David Stern though, when he stopped hand checking in the 90's. I recall Anthony Mason saying that the defensive rules had become so soft, that the players might as well use skirts for uniforms.

The players can take a lot of blame for the state of the league, but i thunk the most pivotal moment of the last 20 years was the malice at the palace in '04'.
The league got scared because a fan who should have gotten swung on actually did when he threw a beer at a player. Instead of setting better standards for the fans they punished the players and got rid of the tough defense.
It's purely about the spectacle these days. They want as many highlight reel moments per game as possible, because that's what gets the dopamine flowing.

The players in the NBA don't want to play defense. The three point shot is proof. A lot of the shots aren't defended. You shoot with no one near you. The players barely guard each other.

Easy to solve. Make money the incentive to win. Players get half their contract gaurenteed. The higher you rank in standings at the end of the year, the more of that contract you make, with the farther you go in the playoffs. The more money you make, with the championship team being the only one to make full money. Guess who’s playing defense every night putting in effort, not sitting out games, and hating their opponents on the floor starting up rivalries again.
If you don’t try on defense or sit out, your own teammates will hate you, because you are taking money out of their pocket.
