    Wow I'm surprised the other video didn't do well, I guess holiday times or the title. That video took me down a wormhole of all your other diff probe videos and such from a while ago. Thanks Dave. Happy New Year

    I just didn't have time to watch the CMRR videos yet, but I do plan on watching it. I think it is just the holidays and with time more will watch.

    Sorry to hear the video hasn't got the views. FWIW, not being an EE, I found your explanation extremely helpful in illustrating the importance of what's been an abstract concept for me.

    It was a great video. I'm trying to design a differential probe to measure voltage drop across a motherboard powerplane when a cpu is under heavy load. I found it very helpful.

    Dave asked why the CMRR vid wasn't popular........Can only think the general electronics public don't care much about CMRR, or even know what it is. Good video though, it'll be a long termer I think.

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  Рік тому +4

      Yes, most people have confirmed that they didn't watch it because they don't know what CMRR and hence don't care about it. So it goes to the bottom of their watchlist.

    "In memoriam: Hendrik W. Bode (1905-1982)", IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Vol. AC-29, No 3., March 1984, pp. 193-194. Quote: "Something should be said about his name. To his colleagues at Bell Laboratories and the generations of engineers that have followed, the pronunciation is boh-dee. The Bode family preferred that the original Dutch be used as boh-dah."
    I must admit I've always pronounced it your way, and I must have got that from university in Ireland, but given the man was born in the US of Dutch extraction, I think we are both wrong!

    I saw the main video on this in my feed and skipped over it due to not being familiar with what CMRR is. Had the title not used the shorthand I probably would have been interested and watched it. Planning to check it out now, just wanted to pass this on.

    Micsig Bode plot looks like a resonance problem. Very similar to the magnitude of a quartz crystal's impedance vs frequency, where the positive peak is the parallel resonant frequency, and negative peak is the series resonant frequency. I suspect you have a fairly high 'Q' LC tank hiding in your probing setup, or Micsig needs to reroute their compensation network.

    Dave, I thought you mentioned in a previous video that Micsig made some changes to this differential probe after your initial tests to improve the CMRR. Is this video testing the original or the updated one?

    • @EEVblog2
      @EEVblog2  Рік тому +4

      Original. They were supposed to investigate and makes changes, but they never got back to me and went on and sold the probe. Don't know it's current status.

    Think the other video initially has low performance because CMRR was traditionally not a well taught topic (non intuitive explanations), unlike that video which was quite good

    I'd love to see something about signal amplification in this type of probe. Finding the optimal op-amp and implementation is quite the rabbit-hole.
    I've got it down to 4 candidates lol. Im thinking I'll just build up a prototype with each and compare their performance.

  • @tlhIngan
    @tlhIngan Рік тому +6

    I think the problem with the video was twofold. First, you released two videos which were basically identical - sure one was an "extended cut" of the other, but you sort of failed to call out the bonus features so anyone who watched the first video would have to sit through the second video having seen most of it again. Alternatively, those who saw there was an extended cut and watched that video would have no need to watch the first video. Maybe it would've been better had you just had a cut where you featured just the bonus parts without needing to see through the whole video again.
    The second reason is, it's a highly technical video at a time when people aren't in a technical mood - it's the holidays and they're enjoying time with family, friends and just end of year relaxing between Christmas and New Year's. This is also because you're featuring a device few hobby people have - so while some people may be busy putting together hobby electronics, they probably don't have a need for a differential probe given what they cost. If they have exposure to one, it's probably through work, and thus such a video would do better when people are back at work.
    You're right in that's it's going to be a long pole video that will do better in the long run - as people return to work they may get to play around with the differential probe at work, or some people might acquire one (either through work or for personal use) and thus learn more about their acquisition.

    Wondering if you run the autocalibration in the MicSig (by pressing and holding x10 and x100 buttons for a few seconds)

    The CCMR performance at audio frequencies is extremely poor for this probe. Would be worth investigating why and maybe finding a fix? I have to declare I own one, so more than interested.

    I think some of the problem is that non-technical people make up a significant portion of views on technical channels. They watch because they find it visually interesting not because they actually understand it. So sometimes a video is killed by the fact that there's nothing visaully interesting to a non-technical person. Lots of math or facts or big words or acronyms and they're probably put off and so watch something else. It's kind of the downside of youtube. The more specialized and in-depth the video is the lower the view count. Often the best videos do the worst because only a small subset of people are interested.

  • @SidneyCritic
    @SidneyCritic Рік тому +3

    I wouldn't use acronyms, ie, type the whole thing. You are relying on people knowing what CMRR means, where as typing full name may trigger words that people latch on to. Also acronyms aren't even consistent world-wide, ie, "CRO Gone Wild" has no meaning outside AUS - lol -.
    As for the vid, it's obscure knowledge for most people, ie, nothing that a low-level hobby guy will find interesting because it's a bit too hardcore. Basically if it was more directly scripted and to-the-point, and shorter, I might not have tuned in and out during the 20min, ie, it's only for the few pros.

    I got a dp10007 one. It's a terrible device. Its error at 20mhz reaches to 19%. In my test, it works well up to 670khz with an error lower than 2%. There is no way to open the enclosure to tune it. Just a waste of money and time.
