  • We found a super rare, never been ridden 1984 Husqvarna 500 AE Automatic 2 Stroke up for auction...so naturally we had to try and buy it! This bike is right up our street, it's a super weird and properly interesting machine with a great back story to go with it - it's not every day you see a 500cc Auto dirt bike after all! In this video we'll go into the History of Husqvarna and find out why this bike was made in the first place, we'll take a look at it's racing credentials and of course we'll have a close inspection of the machine before we place our bids. Make sure you watch until the end to see if we can ride away on our very on Automatic 2 Smoker.... Enjoy guys :-)

I raced a 86 430 auto at the 86 & 87 Black Water 100. By far my favorite bike of all time. They got traction everywhere always in the correct gear. It worked very well. Maintenance was required after every ride auto fluid was expensive.

I have the 1982 Husqvarna 420AE automatic. I bought it for $400.00 about 25 years ago. When I was young I thought these automatics were dumb, but lost my shifting leg when I got a little older and realized the automatic was perfect. It took me years to find one locally and when I did I pounced on it. $400.00!

When I was 14 my dad gave me a 1983 Husqvarna 500 XC. Had it until I was 31 when I sold it to buy a tuned 1989 Kawasaki KX 250. Now at soon 48 I miss it almost daily. Insane power delivery, the sound was amazing.

I was 15 in 1981. My dad had a Husky Automatic. I think it was a 360, but that may have been another bike. He had Greeves, Bultaco's, BSA's, Maico's, and such. He let me do a race on it. I was a skinny kid, I was able ride without worrying about stalling or crashing and not being able to start it. Good memories for sure!

Hello again my friend! In 75' my Dad, at my excessively excited requests purchased 2 Rokon 340MX bikes for me to ride in Texas Enduro's that year. I was already running in Speedway at a very low age ( 14 in 74' with 2 Jawa CZ's the old barnburners... ) and Motocrossing on my 74' Elsinore. Anyways, the Husky's were always in our stable but only one 360 that I can remember... and it was spooky to me in my early teens. After moving to Oklahoma in 79' to go to Tulsa Welding School and when I graduated... they asked what bike would I start back racing with... it took 2 1/2 more years before being able to be moved to a new job at home and got my #1 and #2 81' 1/2 Maico 490 MEGA 2's !!!,( still have them in mothballs in my warehouse... ) Loving your video updates!!!! KUDO'S my friend!
    Respectfully, Seth

Pro-circuit, the then importers brought in a container load of old stock in 1989/90 when the factory in Sweden was cleared. There were all sorts of bikes going back to the early eighties. Watercooled 87/88 WR400s were £1400(just months after I paid £1800 for mine) and the 430 auto;s were £780. There were also air cooled Cr500's and watercooled Cr430's amongst others, with a few of the rare power valved water cooled Cr250's.
Zembruski bought a number of the enduro models, so ask Andre as he is still around for info.
Enduro in the USA was very different to in the rest of the world, it was all about average speed, 22 mph rings a bell. No faster, no slower, with hidden check points and no MX tests.

Great work Guys. I think you did the right thing not buying it. There are quite a few Husky 500AE's floating around the word and unfortunately, they don't seem to get the money you'd think they should and the one in the video has a few non-standard things on it which would indicate it may have had more use than they said. I have the only Husky 500AE ever sold New in New Zealand. My brother and I had always liked the Idea of the Husky Autos and he bought a 1978 Husky 390 in 1982. I had one ride on it and loved it so much (I had a 1977 Husky 250CR at the time and a PE 175Z on order) I rushed into the New Zealand Husky Importer Tim Gibbs Motors to buy one. Tim checked with the factory but there weren't any of the 1982 420 Autos left but the factory was working on a prototype 500 model for the 1984 season, so I immediately paid my deposit. A year later in November 1983, My 500AE arrived. I raced it quite a bit for about 10 years, Mainly Motocross but also Hare Scrambles, Enduro, and beach racing. I was a pretty hopeless MX rider but the Auto did make me a lot faster, As an enduro bike they weren't as flash as the MX bikes at the time but in my 1st race on it, I was lapped by the New Zealand 500 champion on his Kawasaki New Zealand semi-works KX500 just before a long rough uphill, The 500 Auto was fast enough to keep up right behind him all the way up the hill, unfortunately, I wasn't a good enough rider to keep up on the rest of the course. The 500 would pull more than 100MPH (160kph) in Hare Scrambles and when beach racing only specially built Methanol-burning YZ490 and CR500 were faster at the New Zealand champs. Huskies were very Expensive here back then due to high government taxes My 500AE cost about $30,000 NZD in today's money (nearly 15,000 pounds). It had a lot of problems with the 1st clutch design which I finally managed to fix by replacing it with a 1986 one ( taken from a brand new bike in the showroom at the Australian importer's in late 1985, which cost me over 1000 pounds (In today's money) but was worth it. I also had a rid on to1986 430AE on their test track and it was a much better bike than the 500 but I couldn't afford to buy one. There is a very good Husqvarna Automatics Facebook page and HVA Factory in the UK has built a very special 500 Auto. You may be able to find someone who will loan you one to do a feature on. Please let me know if i can be of help Kind Regards Bruce Hartley

Great news. Just a couple of things to watch out for. Don't underestimate the free-wheeling into corners, (absolutely no engine braking) I had a top rider crash through a fence on my 500. Jumping can be tricky as you can't change up to help smooth the launch, They love Bermed corners, hit them as hard as you can and scrape the handlebars all the way around under full power and you can brake slide tight corners as you don't have to worry about stalling. They are weird at first but great fun especially if the track turns into an almost impossible quagmire then they are almost unbeatable @@999lazer

Hey Max, my brother has a 2 wheel drive Christini bike. It’s a Honda 450 frame and running gear, with a gas gas ec300 2 stroke engine with electric start! It drives the front wheel by the flick of a lever which engages a shaft, driven from the front sprocket and pulls up hills where most bikes wouldn’t dream of going. If you want a holiday come on down…..under 😉 we’re located in Sydney Australia 🇦🇺.

My buddy had a husky about the same year. We spent half a day digging a hole and piling the dirt on one side for a jump. He jumped it on his wifes bike and flew. Ran back to the house and got his husky. It soaked it up like a speed bump and almost went in the hole onthe other side. I doubt a modern bike can hang with that one over high speed whoops. The suspension was amazing(in a straight line)

  • @KlockworXMusic

You can solve most of the issues with these autos, I know someone people that still race them because they are fast through turns, and some that use them for endurance races like the Baja 1000. The heat problem and changing the oil frequently are solved together; remove the drain and fill plugs and plumb in a filter, pump, and oil cooler. Once that's done you can run a larger variety of oils, something with good high heat performance still as it will get warm, but I know people will run normal motor oil or automatic transmission fluid instead of the Univis. For the springs, better springs and you can get a spring retaining washer that keeps broken springs from flopping out and chewing up the side of the case. I have an 86 430 AE and its definitely the best of the bunch as you mentioned, great bike.

Another great video Max. You had your history of the bike right, except that you said the kickstarter was on the wrong side. I have a suggestion for you. You said the bike didn't sell. Put an ad out to buy a Husky Auto and see if the owner of the bike doesn't contact you. I have done a lot of auction sales over the years and can tell you that besides you paying the buyer's premium of 18%, the seller is also giving up 15-20%. If he or someone else get's a hold of you, then you will be able to hear the bike run and get a chance to test ride it.
Glad that you put up Husky's GP championship wins. In 1972 I helped pit for my cousin's husband and the local Husky dealer at
the Mint 400 in Las Vegas. Rolf Tibblin and Bob Grossi won that race on a 400 Husky and Rolf and Gunnar Lindstrom also won the
Baja 1000 that year. I think they rode the Husky 500 twin that year and I think that bike is at the White Brothers museum. You could check it out on your trip when coming back from Japan and seeing the Honda twin and also their automatic. Happy travels.

Check out the Rokon Automatics, 340-360's I believe that were made in the '73-'75 or '76 range. I recall as I was about 10yo and an avid young rider of a TM75 and XR75. Having my first experiences on a Rickman 125 and a Bultaco 250 Pursang of that era, it seemed like holding onto a rocket. Couldn't even touch the ground but my sister's BF who owned the Rick and Bull and was a racer would cut me loose on them. Hold me upright and give me a shove, my friends just eyes as big as saucers ripping those beasts (for then). Anyway, I remember the Rokon's in Dirt Bike magazine and had clipped a picture of one and hung it on my wall, it was there for years. It was a White Bike with Red and Blue lettering and a Starts and Stripes of the American flag type theme. Cool shit and great memories.

Reminds me of the clutch ive fitted in my kxf its called a revloc dyna ring it makes my bike semi automatic it works in the same way. By spinning force. You can change springs for different outcomes. Extremely easy to fit and its a shame it wasn't marketed that well. Most will now know it as a Recluse clutch. However i think they bought the rights or something along those lines and put the price right up in comparison. I found mine 2nd hand on ebay barely any use from a rmz. I wasn't even looking for it i didn't even know they existed but my bike on the track now is semi auto. I can focus more on cornering and braking and it wont stall if dropped. Just pick it back up and off i go. I only gave £150 for it which i think is a great deal.

You may have dodged a bullet. The bike requires frequent tranny oil changes with an expensive oil. No engine braking means rear brakes wear out faster. You could change the motor to a 430 or 500 with a gear box plus some other parts and you would have a great bike. Likely you have fallen on your head a few times so you could convert the bike to electric. What is amazing about old Husky's is their handlebars. Most used Husky's I have seen going back to 1972 have original handlebars. Usually they are bent. You didn't mention they made sewing machines. My mom had 2 of them.

Before I purchased my 1979 390 WR, I had the opportunity to ride a 78 390 Automatic. My biggest complaint was that I found the bike extremely difficult to slow down. It took a fair amount of riding time to figure out how to manipulate the brakes and throttle to best use the transmission to your advantage, and not to your detriment. It was fun, but obviously not for me. I love my WR. Best bike I’ve ever owned.

Hell Yea! You should have bought that bike for anything under $7,000,00 (Mate!) That was a verry Significant bike although the Rokon Corp, made an Competitive Automatic Motocrosser 5 years earlier it was also more suited to Enduro, However when Husky did it "it was magic" for our freinds who couldn't shift(We all got one of those) but even my prfrence for the 6 speed I can apreciate it for what it was a World Class Motocross Motorcyle

Had a 420 AE (4 Speed) and a 500 AE (3 speed) they were really good when traction was scarce. The more technical terrain, the better, especially getting up hills.. But alot of maintenence. The 420 was a really good looking dirt bike, not so much the 500. If you are used to riding snowmobiles, riding the AE's was easy.

Very cool mtorcycle, but the price seemed a bit high for your purposes. A collector would be willing to pay more I guess. I had a '76 AE and found it quirky but fun to ride. The freewheeling was definitely hard to get used to but in the bush it worked quite well. About 15 years ago I got hold of a brand new '83 500CR Husky (not the auto) and loved it. The LHS kickstart was its downfall, I hated stalling it on the track because of that. But I had a lot of fun on it for several years in vintage MX and dirt track.

I'm not sure on the bidding. On one hand as an outright buy it wasn't worth the risk but on the other hand you could always throw it back through the auction and probably get most of that back - maybe more if you sort it as a good runner.
