Art really is one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration. The biggest impediment to my artwork was getting bored half way through. I'd quit and move on to something new and repeat the process.
Thank you for sharing your process in regards to the reference. The idea of having a mobile light station to figure out directions and angles is brilliant. Now I can use this method to teach a friend about contrast.
I like how you completely changed the shading on your back muscles, the drawing looks very real, and when you look longer it takes a twist and the dark is changing the anatomy! Great job on creating that!! I did something like that with my lemons, people think they are orange slices but I painted them different colors than my photograph.
Two words: Toned Paper. Thank you for illustrating the struggle with obtaining excellent reference! That said, I will attempt to explain why I prefer working on toned paper instead of white paper or substrate and why it enhances and eases the work in the long run. If you start with a toned paper, or substrate, in a mid-tone rather than white, you can then work both sides of the mid-tone while you establish your lights and darks, Then, you can go back into the mid-tones to work at subtleties and nuances if you choose. Therefore, you do not work as hard on the mid-tones. You work around the mid-tones. The tradeoff; you must put in the highlights rather than avoid the highlights. The overall look is different and I am not sure it will take to graphite? Works well with charcoal. Perhaps toning the white paper? I would love to see you try......... Or, am I clear as mud?
Thank you for sharing about lighting. The subject I draw are flower's. I have had a lot of problems with lighting. You have helped me so much ❤. I have a question. What do you use as backing board? For wetting your paper on? Also what you use when you are drawing?
Fantastic Lesson Jono!!! Thank you so much!!! I always find when I go to live drawing sessions that if there's bad lighting it's really hard to make nice drawings
Hey! Do you recommend improving my drawing skills by practicing with ink or graphite? I heard good things about ink pens, especially after researching about kim jung gi
Self discovery as an artist, why you create what you create and, style as an artist I would like to know your story will help shape mine dear Jono thanks

""Honoring the Large Masses & Shapes" - just queing in to the series that I have missed and will review all that you've done so far. Always great ideas and particularly about the detail, and the light sources / c h i a s c u r o. NYC, LaGuardia School of the Performing Art's, the FAME school as in the movies, has a minimum of over 14 000 students either auditioning or showing their art portfolios for a few spots a year to be admitted when the previous senior class graduates. In a van with my daughter and 3 of her friends going to LaGuardia to test out for the art studio. Reviewed light sources and questioned them where is the light is coming from with a pamphlet that I had and could show them examples and talk about techniques etc. The point that I was trying to make, Don't make up the light source, as it is everything that will dominate your drawing. I'm a fine artist by trade and felt that I helped them out immensely as they said it was a standardized test. Beforehand, my daughter stated that the Art & Design School was harder with a live model /which was a practical test.
Yay!! Perfect timing for me, moving lights all around right now. Thanks Jono!! Love your videos!

Fantastic Lesson Jono!!! Thank you so much!!! I always find when I go to live drawing sessions that if there's bad lighting it's really hard to make nice drawings

Another educating video 😊
Hey! Do you recommend improving my drawing skills by practicing with ink or graphite? I heard good things about ink pens, especially after researching about kim jung gi
Both are great and totally optional but with ink, you cant erase a mistake which is good practice to try control your hand.
They are such different mediums. I suggest practicing the one you want to continue using 🙂
As always. U r amazing
Self discovery as an artist, why you create what you create and, style as an artist I would like to know your story will help shape mine dear Jono thanks
I have a question
What if you don't have these resources, what would you recommend one to do?
Hey, Ashley, using natural light is great for getting contrast. A well-situated window is all you need 👌
Thank you ❤️
Any time! Thanks for watching, Micca 🙌
