Television is such a minor player with regards to foreign travel. The music industry has been devastated by Brexit. The music industry brought in many millions each year (before Brexit), far more economically significant than fishing, although it never got a seat at the negotiation table. Apart from the great songwriters and artists the UK produces, before Brexit the UK was the centre of European touring, with world class tech support staff (aka roadies, plus lights, sounded security), trucking companies, bus companies. The average salary today is £35,000, 29x more than 1970. That puts a Mini at around £19,000 today using a percentage of average salary. I used to have a 1970s Mini and I never want another. The most basic piece of noisy, rusty tin I ever owned (Although as a 17 year old I loved it of course).
Based on Salary high quality products are incredibly cheap today. Literally the only thing that stops us all enjoying cheap, high quality products is the cost of housing. All the gains we made in cheaper products were taken back, and more, in mortgage costs.
Not only are cars about the same percentage of salary that they have always been, modern cars have levels of luxury and reliability that were just fantasies in 1970. @@pobinr I quit my job in London 3 years ago to relocate to my wife's hometown in eastern europe in order to raise our kids close to their grandparents: cheaper (and better) housing, we've just bought. Better access to healthcare, dentists on every street, my kids will have *free* university education in Vienna, my wife (now dual citizen with a British passport) still works for her British employer due to the skills shortage in the UK, and I make use of my freedom of movement (I've got an EU passport through my parents) to work as a contractor for businesses needed to operate on the continent, something which UK-only passport holders are not able to do anymore. The differential also means that we'll be able to buy in the UK too thanks to the money we are saving (lower cost of living) Long term it means that if my kids decide to work in London they will do so free of student debt, without having to pay rent thanks to the property we'll buy for them in or close to London, and with 2 passports (hence having free movement for work) which will give them an unbeatable advantage over your kids when applying for jobs. You guys are still in denial over how you shot yourself (and your kids) in the foot, aren't you?

Just imagine driving from Leeds to Southern Germany via France with 10 trucks full of extremely expensive equipment so that an American band can perform an outdoor concert for just one night. The transport company doesn't care about the cost of the ferry. What they care about most is that the lever-arch file of documentation that is the Carnet is filled in completely accurately. Even when it is, both the UK authorities check it before the trucks are loaded on to the ship in Dover and the French authorities check it before the trucks can leave the port at Calais. Both sets of authorities can delay the trucks for as long as is necessary to satisfy themselves that everything is in order. This can literally take days. Now wonder why UK based firms specialising in this type of transport and storage are moving their operations to the Netherlands. "Welcome to the Brexit sir."

The greatest loser since Brexit, besides the British people themselves is the City of London, no longer the focus of Europe, but now simply but an offshoot of Wall Street and NASDAQ...
The City of London’s diminished status post-Brexit is emblematic of the broader economic and geopolitical challenges facing the UK. While it remains a significant global financial center, its role as the heart of European finance has been severely undermined. The shift toward greater reliance on Wall Street and NASDAQ underscores its reduced autonomy and global influence. Whether London can reinvent itself and regain its former glory will depend on its ability to adapt to a post-Brexit world and capitalize on new opportunities beyond the EU.

    • @davidpaterson2309
      @davidpaterson2309 6 годин тому +1

The problem is that we cannot “rejoin the EU”. “Rejoin” infers going back the status quo ante, which is not a possibility and does not exist as a process . We may “apply again to be a member” but the terms on which we might join would not be like those that we so carelessly threw away and might be even more difficult to sell politically (eg in theory, any new member must commit to both the euro and Schengen). And that’s why it’s hard to raise the subject. What we might do, as an interim step to repair some of the worst economic damage, is to join the Customs Union and Single Market (pretty much the Lib Dem position) but even that is pretty fraught - it would reintroduce FOM and we’d be a “rule taker” which is much the same as the “Swiss Model” which both the EU and the Swiss hate.

For the vast bulk of the UK population it has made no difference at all. We can still have our fortnight in Shagaluf, Benidorm, Turkey or Thailand and we're still in the Top Ten wealthiest and most powerful countries on the Planet. The message of the disaster that is Brexit clearly hasn't been understood by many foreign nationals who are still willing to pay with their lives to get here in leaky rubber boats.

    • @Randoman590

He couldn't implement Brexit "properly" because there IS no "properly" to this. It was always a promise to have your cake an eat it too, there was no good outcome to this. Farage took the collective anger of the overlooked working class and pinned all of their very complicated issues on one scapegoat: immigration. The immigrants are ruining the country and Brexit will get rid of them, he said. The truth is the UK population has ONLY grown at all in the past 20 years because of immigration, the UK birthrate is declining. In its current state the UK can't sustain itself without the help of foreigners.

I somewhat agree with James but I would have to say it wouldn't necessarily mean the cheapest car for electric. But a comparable , well designed car for the same price or close to the same as a combustion engine version. The Dacia isn't available in our market but I would hope it is half decent design and build quality. BYD has built out a growing market share here versus Tesla in our market. Similarly I am seeing a few electric MG on the road as well.

Funny to hear how different the discourse is about electric cars depending on which country you are from. I am from Denmark and here the talk is more about WHEN will everything be electric. Americans I see sound like the will give up their gasolin cars about the same time as they will their guns. In the UK appearently it is "we will see what the consumers say" when frankly that is not an option here.

Do you think, just possibly, that the reason people ‘fuss’ so much about range on an EV is due to the challenges in finding working charging points with no queue, the cost of public EV charing often exceeding buying petrol/diesel, and then it taking an hour to ‘refill’. Do you think if an ICE took an hour to refill the tank with petrol stations being few and far between, being liable to be found not working and might require a looong wait someone else already fuelling, people might similarly ‘fuss’ about petrol (diesel) car range? Just possibly? And 80% of journeys being under whatever range is a pointless argument. The issue is about; So what about those _over_ the car’s range?

The major problem with electric cars is the logistics involved with charging the battery. The power has to be generated , by wind turbines, fossil fuel, solar and nuclear power etc. Then has to be distributed, nationally and the locally to where the cars will be charged. There are problems at each stage.
    1) There insufficient power generation capacity.
    2) The national grid has the wrong confirmation to collect and distribute power from wind farms etc. It was designed to distribute power from centrally located power stations, that was based on start networks.
    3) The substations that distribute power locally and to each house have insufficient capacity to supply, if everyone try to charge their cars at the same time.
    4) There are many people that do not have access to convenient chargers.
    5) Community charging, on street etc is inadequate and expensive. Fast chargers at motorway service stations are too few in number and are extremely expensive.
    6) The batterie are expensive and are contracted using scares eg; rare earth metals, that are obtained in unstable regions of the world and/or are controlled by China etc. As yet these batteries cannot be recycled.
