I’m a 66 year old lathe machinist and am always learning something new, keep at you’ll get down. Always do your best to get your tools as perfectly on centerline as possible, don’t let your tools stick out any more than you have to rigid setups always work better, if you get a jump like that stop loosen rotate and clamp the stock again. Congratulations on the new machine and keep at your going to start impressing your self before you know it.
With the machine OFF put the tip of the tool in front of the stock and take a machinist scale, I use a 6 inch and set between the tip and the round stock wit just enough tension to hold it in place then look at it from the tailstock end of the lathe to make sure it is straight up and down, shim as nessary until you get that answer
As others have said. Your tool tip needs to be dead centre of the bar. Pack it with anything like feeler guage or even pieces of hacksaw blade. Take very small light cuts. Do not run the lathe too fast os slow. You will get a feel for it in time. I use mine for all sorts including making rings etc. It just takes a little time & you will master it. Good luck. Given you a sub to help your channel. Steve.
Your tool height is too low and the brass bar is trying to climb on top of it, put packing shims under the lathe tool and keep doing facing tests until you don't get any center spike 👍
Thanks you very much for the comment! I'm thinking about getting a quick change tool post that, if I'm not mistaken will allow the tool height to be adjusted. If not, then I'll try the shims. This is the only complaint I have so far. Seems that the tools Harbor Freight sells for this lathe should fit correctly.
One of the very first things you need to do is get rid of those carbides and buy some HSS toolbits & learn how to grind / sharpen them on an 8" bench grinder with a pink wheel. Next, you need to do about three years worth of reading.
@@SouthWindCoinrings If you lived anywhere near my neck of the woods, I'd be happy to show you around the MiniLathe and point out its weak points & how to get around them, teach you how to grind toolbits to do what you want them to do, et cetera.

Hi Kelly, Thank you so much for the encouraging and informative comments! It's much appreciated! I'll follow your advice and keep working on it.

Hi William, I ended up putting a dead center in the tailstock and setting the tool height that way. Thanks!

Don't try to cut with the full side of the tool!! Tool.height is WAY low.
Hi Jeff, yea, I figured that out. I made some shims to raise the tool and it's working much better now.

Thanks Tim! I appreciate your comments. I've been spending a lot of time watching how to lathe videos. There are a lot of good ones out there.

PLEASE speak louder.
Will do!
Blondihacks has a good lathe channel
I found Blondihacks and have been watching her introduction to Lathes videos. About to watch the first project, I think it might be a ring.
