I can sense the sadness he has about leaving this build. It's absolutely beautiful! I think we all need to get on the program here and do better for the earth. Plus this is very cost effective and rewarding! There's nothing like creating something you use everyday. As a artist, I can truly say it's so meaningful.
This is such a beautiful home, I'm blown away! You are an awesome craftsman and I only wish I could live in a home built by you. There is such a flow in the shapes and the natural colors! Thanks for the video, Tammie Miller
Such a bitter sweet presentation. He's obviously very proud and happy about how it's turned out, warts and all. Still, it's closing a chapter of his life so he can open a new one and you can see it on his face. So much emotion bubbling under the surface but it's also very passive and subtle. Kinda like Earthships themselves. It is what it is. Every nook and cranny of this house is twenty years of memories for him, tho it may be new and novel for the viewer.
Passive cooling is great and all... but I'm starting an Earthship this spring and I'm planning on engineering an energy efficient active cooling solution built directly into a passive system -so that either may be used. I have plenty of water, so evaporation cooling seems to be my best option. The water pump will run on 12v but the exhaust fan needs to be pretty powerful. A 300 watt exhaust fan should be sufficient. With the addition of two solar panels I could directly power the active cooling system during hot days. When I'm not cooling the Earthship - a transfer switch can direct that extra energy into a battery bank or dump load. I want to build an over-sized aquaponic greenhouse on my earthship so that I can produce large quantities of food year-round... and an indoor swimming pool wouldn't be a bad idea either =)
poweredbyaaron99 Please if you could record your build that would be amazing! Or if you could give a tour or something. I'm sure many of us would love to see your dream in reality! :) Good luck and take care!
a natural pool would be my choice, many are converting their blue painted concrete pools to be green eco friendly with living plant cleaning systems. Check them out they're beautiful
Beautiful place. By the way, did you ever think of replacing your beds with Murphy Beds? In my place I have only MBs and I find the space they provide when they are closed amazing. You can buy the mechanisms cheaply on line and incorporate them into your own bed designs; I even know of someone that actually made the mechanism in his shop.
We took the Earthship Seminar in September of 1997, don't remember if this one was on the tour or not. Ted sure did a great job and we'd live in it in a heart beat!
AMAZING! Thanks for sharing. Love the house! I am sharing these videos with my MP, and hope to get some projects under way. Stop the UK Government wasting Tax Payers money on Fracking research, destroying herbal plants and our environment etc, and invest in EARTHSHIPS! Wish me luck!
Thank you to show your house. And sharing the way you live and how efficient it is. Just a quick comment. I know it’s good to filter your water. But if you get fresh water it’s is very healthy to drink specially from the ground. Too much filtration will kill the good minerals on the water... just a tip for you. 🌺
I've seen a lot of Earthships in various videos now, and Ted's is really the first that didn't strictly follow the expected "look." Kudos to him, he really has a very keen design esthetic.
Great! great! video you give a great amount of information to know what sort of things I should be learning about in order to be able to build an off grid home. It almost like an index of stuff to go and learn from. The house is also beautiful BTW you should be extremely proud. Thanks for sharing. 😁
This building setting works for not everyone as many folks prefer to have windows in all sides. In colder weather, windows have to be a specialty ones, that are double or even triple and those big windows are costly for sure, which has to be hallways in front part and again windows to cut hit loss during fridged night of northern climate.
It's beautiful I could watch another 20 minutes of this video. I like your homemade touches in the bathtub and cabinets repurposing windows and cans, good job. I'm sure you will miss her.
Thank you for the tour. Does the internet broadcasted from your produce high speed internet? Example fast enough to run a VOIP phone, stream Netflix and UA-cam videos at 1080p or higher? I would love to live in an Earthship community however I require fast internet for my work. Thanks.
Very nice video and house; thanks for posting it. What is the arrangement with the internet provider - do you get free internet, do they pay you? How fast is your connection? Is this type of arrangement common?
Where did you buy the washing machine from? I'm hoping to build one of these type of homes in GA one day. (If I'm allowed that is, other than that we may be off to Mexico!)
I’m very interested in building an earth berm house or earthship. I will be building it a colder climate. That being said I have always thought that the best way to heat one of these in very cold places was to build in rocket mass heaters. You’ve got all that thermal mass it only seems to make sense to incorporate a rocket mass heater into that mass to heat it. Do you know anyone who has done this? I’d like to see how that works.
I live in the desert southwest too like Ted. But there are families that have used the rocket mass heaters here. It is not as cold as up north but the desert floor will get very cold. And we do get freezing temps at times also. Check it out on UA-cam mylittlehomestead they have two that look very nice in the homes.
All of the Earthships I've seen so far have been in the desert. Any examples/videos you can point me to that were built in cooler climates? I'm in Virginia, and I wonder how one would fare here.
Rick Rose Same here. I'm from Belgium and we get way less solar energy and get regular rain so the soil is wetter. So I too would like to see examples of earthships in different climates. I suppose most off-grid houses are in the desert just because a connection to the grid there is harder.
Ward Indigne Seattle is cloudy and our solar panels work great. Germany has tons of Solar Panels and you aren't far from there. Lot of people get more solar panels then they need, but only some cities will pay you for any extra electricity that you put back into the power grid.
+Ward Indigne Actually, I think a lot of the Codes that apply to building in the US dont apply in certain areas of New Mexico which is why so many Earthships are built there.
I like the idea of more traditional clean lines and conventional interiors on an Earthship like Ted morphs, though I think Ted cut some corners on an Orthodox Earthship...
I can sense the sadness he has about leaving this build. It's absolutely beautiful! I think we all need to get on the program here and do better for the earth. thanks tammie! all cred to Ted

He must move to the suburbs and get back on the grid.

lol I call BS
you should write a book describing how you did these wonderful things. What a guy! Talented. beautiful job.
Dianne Robinson He didn't really invent the idea. There is a UA-cam documentary called something like garbage warrior if you like to know more.
michael reynolds invented the idea
Very beautiful and environment friendly home. Thanks for showing such a good video.
Thanks for the tip on the Copperass (Iron Sulfate) concrete stain trick.

Thanks for bringing us along. Would be great to hear what you would do different in your next build.
Thanks
Excellent tour -- thanks for sharing!
🇬🇧🇬🇧 impressed by your determination over the years, I may have lost interest and left it half finished! 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Absolutely beautiful and very close to my dream home design!
Beautiful, man! An inspiration for my wife and I! Thanks for sharing your home.

I have been watching your video's for a year noe. Why are you moving?
I have the same question.
I am probably too old to build my own Earthship, but I am looking to buy an already made one, if possible.🙏
@@carolgarrett1786 You see them listed on zillow sometimes in Taos, NM.

Awesome!!! Just love Your home. Wondering if You and Your Family built another Earthship home and that's why you were moving?
I love it...and hope to build my own near Crockett, TX one day.

What was the total cost of putting everything together? Would you recommend to others to build an earthship? Thank You!
Very nice video and house; thanks for posting it. What is the arrangement with the internet provider - do you get free internet, do they pay you? How fast is your connection? Is this type of arrangement common?
+John Hunter taos net, its good speed, maybe 25 down , 5 up. Costs regulat amount. Everyone has it out here. Its delivered via radio
Very beautiful
how do you prevent alge growth in the cisterns? and how do you set up the electricity and water?
Great video. Home is very nice.
at 7:00 IKEA ain't got nothing on your window shades! love your design
Beautiful house
Nice Earthship! And Kombucha!
will you be building another new home? And will you be taken us along for the ride
I think there are videos of others he built, for rental.
Where did you buy the washing machine from? I'm hoping to build one of these type of homes in GA one day. (If I'm allowed that is, other than that we may be off to Mexico!)
Great job, like your house.
If my cisterns were over flowing I’d say it’s full tub time!! 👍🏼
Loved it where you moving to ?
Does it get too hot in the summer? Why did you use can walls where you want thermal mass?
If I built one I would get or make automatic vents, install some sensors and program it to keep stable temperature.

AmeriJam Acres, you READ MY MIND! I'm in CT, and it gets cooooold in the winter here too!

My little homestead on YT.
could you go into more depth on "what rules to break and what rules not to break" a whole vid perhaps. more details on your home too!
Surprised the new home he built he did not show any rooms underground. Yet this one has one.
nice work
how dare people give a thumbs down, after you welcomed them into your home. how rude. said with a smile
wow i would love to build something like this in south America or Africa
Does the cat come with the Earth Ship?
This is pretty , I love it , and would never move x

+Kelly Sheridan thsnks kelly!

Nice place!
Oh dear! I hope you have a heater for your fish tank. They might be chilly down there.
Awesome house!
+Matt Nunya thanks matt
My dream house, dream on.

Rick Rose In France they have homes inside caves. Just long as you can keep the bats out.
Ha! They have those in Spain as well. My wife and I saw one for sale when we were there a few years ago and thought, "Hmmmmm..."
+Ward Indigne Actually, I think a lot of the Codes that apply to building in the US dont apply in certain areas of New Mexico which is why so many Earthships are built there.
is that a jar of kombucha in your electric utility closet?
I saw that as well. Haha. It's gotta be.
Nice kombucha culture at 9:19!
Is he moving to New York City? It’s his t-shirt though.
I like the idea of more traditional clean lines and conventional interiors on an Earthship like Ted morphs, though I think Ted cut some corners on an Orthodox Earthship...
Impressive!
Wow!! Very nice
he's selling it but did he build a new one or plans to build a new earth ship??? or is he going back to a traditional house?
New Mexico?
What is that noise through out the whole video. Sounds like someone is stroking the microphone lol
dat natural light.
