Can confirm about having a 50 instead of a 24-70, we shoot so much on our phones nowadays that the 24-35 range just feels like its nothing to write home about I use a nifty 50, a 10mm fisheye, and a 70-200 f/4 for almost all that I do. Since I shoot skate and automotive mostly, I usually don’t need anything between 15 and 50 mm and if I do, the fisheye covers it. Also, I keep the terrible kit lens in my bag just in case I actually need something in that range. I guarantee everyone has one in their closet somewhere, and am probably the only person who would recommend keeping it in your bag. But also, nice video! Very casual and informative!
@@RoyceMyerLee Heya, I did have to edit the original comment, I accidentally put 70-200 instead of 24-70 in the first sentence. I apologize for the inconvenience of this comment, but the edit does change the original meaning of the comment significantly enough to warrant the update
Man, I really enjoy your style and this video. I couldn't agree more. My preferred kit is a 16-35 and a 70-200. I hardly use midrange so the 24-70 doesn't get a ton of use. For others the 24-70 is the work horse. All in all, it depends and the person, their work, and what they want their kit to be. Well done man. Instant sub
Nice video and this popped up because of what I’ve been thinking these days too. I finally completed the holy trinity. Before this, the 24-70 was my workhorse and the 70-200 was my god mode lens. I just got the 15-35 and I already feel like the 24-70 might get sold now in favor of the 50mm prime simply because 15-35 is great for all the full body portraits I shoot and the 50 would be the best for the closer portraits. My only fear is I travel a lot and the 24-70 was the perfect travel and event lens for me because it did pretty much all I needed…so I dunno do I lose that ability? Such a tough set of choices whenever you shoot all sorts of genres. 😅
And now you just got over 600 subs! ;) Great video and love the energy. Everywhere i go I always bring my 24-70 with me and recently got a 85mm prime and i absolutely love it. Looking for options for wide angle lenses now, although i dont use wide angles that much.
100% figure out what your niche is. I dropped well over 10K in trash tokens for my lenses and there's maybe only 1 I consistently use. Granted, I can afford to be financially reckless with my money, but most can't. Find what you what to shoot, and then focus on that before branching out. Good vid too, Brother. Subscribed!
It's not a scam... For beginners, maybe they can develop skills on a particular lens and don't need all 3, but pros have to be able to capture moments in varying conditions and might need a trinity to be able to do so.
Right! I think having all 3 truly help capture moments in various conditions. But if you’re a beginner or maybe someone who only would need certain focal lengths, not all 3 are needed. Truly depends on the user and their specific niche in my opinion. Thanks for sharing! Love this feedback!
I hardly if ever actually use my Sony 16-35mm... I think that's most important for UA-camrs, or vloggers. And the only time I find myself using it is if I know I'm going for a specific wide angle look or going to be doing photos in a smaller space. For me I got the Sony 24-70mm GM II first. Then the Sony 35mm F1.4 GM. Then the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM II. And my next purchase will be the next Sony 85mm F1.2 (hopefully). But I use the 16-35 the least.
Really informative video man, much appreciated. Especially given the advice for any prospective new photographers that may be hesitant to spend so much on camera equipment.
Yeah defo depends on your usage - 16-35 F4, 70-200 F4 (for walks) and 150-600 Sigma for sports - I’ve had the 24-105 but never really used it. The 16-35 is spectacular for outdoors and wide portrait-eque shots. Good vid btw, subbed.
I think a lot of UA-camrs push the holy trinity because it's close to impossible to recommend lenses that will work for everyone in any situation. I agree that you should rather spend time figuring out what you want to shoot before investing in lenses. I have some that I probably used twice and never picked up again that some UA-camrs swear by, just because it doesn't suit what I'm taking pictures of
Do I want #1 or #2 or #3. Yes, all of them. My photo life involved photojournalism in the military working on a number of base newspapers. So I am a jack of all trades, from extreme wide angle to extreme telephoto and everything in between. I see your issue working within a short zoom range where the telephoto is not your thing. But you are limiting yourself and thus, you need to zero in on only the lens range that fits your job. I think you will enjoy the telephoto zoom a lot. It will offer you a different perspective than wide angle lens, and you may enjoy it, also. Expand your horizons.
It’s a scam. I use to work at camera store and we sold the equivalent of 18-55 and 55-200 as extra. After awhile I thought way. Well because 18-55 is not enough so I started selling something like an 18-105 or something. To that defect and more of my customers were happier since they didn’t have to switch out and get dust inside their camera. It’s the manufacturers who force newbies to buy this type of system. Same with the 24-70 2.8 And then the 70-200 2.8. Not that they aren’t good but you are better off with the Tamron 20-40 2.8 and 35-150 2.8
Hey Royce, nice video. I started with the 24-70 GM as recommended by my pro in the shop. I started using it at the desk, but for run&gun vlogging I love the new 16-35 PZ G-lens. I do have the 70-200 GM but it is a heavy one so I almost never take it with me. Greets from Berlin!
great video! for my aquarium photos i mostly use the 100 macro, but for my family photos, wish i got the 50mm, but i got the 85mm instead. might need the 70-200 for kids sports soon. Didn;t find the need for a 24-70 vs a 50mm for my shooting style. can;t wait to watch more of your videos!
I recently purchased a 70-200 f2.8 III from canon, my other lens is a 24-105 F4L and i find that covers everything i do/need. ive never been a wide angle beyond 24mm kinda person. that being said.. im gonna get me that 24-70 f2.8 and let the wife use my 24-105.. my heart has always belonged to primes.. if i could add two to my bag, it'd be the canon 85 f1.8 , and the EF 135mm f/2L USM.. id be done at that point lol
Great question but honestly the short answer is-whatever you’re the most into! It could range from portrait, landscape, street, sports, food, wildlife, product..the list goes on! You name your favorite hobby and that could your niche! I’m hoping to make a video on this soon but hopefully that helps! 🙂
@@oliviaczhou not sure if I can make a video on that specifically since I honestly think that depends on the individual to be able to market themselves well enough and to be able to hone their skills enough for others to want their services. @@RoyceMyerLee unfortunately, not a wedding celebrating type of person. I am currently doing stock photography. There are some earnings but I hit a blocker to increase sales.
I think you missed the point. It’s not that these are the first lenses you should get (your 50mm comment). The point is that you can cover a huge range and just carry 3 lenses. Most photographers end up owning the trinity because it is flexible enough to cover almost any type of photography at an o.k. level, and at an ok Fstop. You are meant to supplement it with primes for shooting the stuff you specialize in. Realistically most people go through a bunch of gear before getting to a holy trinity… and the advice comes from wanting to save people money… but it skips the steps of realizing the frustrations in current gear and the decision point that leads you to each lens. I would say that almost no photographer recommending a holy trinity ever started with one. They evolved to it… and also probably have videos about why you need a 50mm, and why you primes are better than zooms, etc, etc..
I decided to not have this problem by buying all the lenses and being too poor to go out and shoot anything.
Haha would be nice to have all the lenses tho 😅
And that's when you sell the 24-70 and 70-200 and get the tamron 35-150. From what you just described, that is what you should do.
Definitely will consider it and give it some thought. Appreciate the feedback! Thanks! 🙏🏻
Followed by a 150-500/600 for those wildlife photos. 😅
