John Cale is my hero. He is a true artist. He's done just about every style. He's produced some great records for other people. He's done cool stuff with Brian Eno(another great artist). He can write great poetry. He can write great melodies. He can punk rock. He can pop rock. He can go far out into space. He's one of the best around. Left field and passionate. The way art should be.
That's Kevin Tooley my former brother in law on drums. Was married to his older brother Edward Tooley jr. Saw him play the drums for Mr. polite and humble John Cale at The Bottom Line in NYC. I miss those days so much. Great show btw. Chris Spedding on guitar. He was a bit shy and reserved but cool. Great guitarist.
john cale is one of the most interesting and original musicians ever, when you're exploring his long discography you never know what's next, like bowie. he is so bizarre, intelectual and sometimes so hermetic. he can be a gentleman, he can be so aggresive, he has no limits.
It's just brilliant all over. I'm not a musician but I love the weird drum beat. The guitar solo is wonderful. But the heartfelt lyrics are just so touching. Or maybe that's just me. I love this song.
@@fromagepat I know it's unusual, and I'm sure that it's not very easy to do. It adds so much to the music for me. It sounds like Cale is pouring his heart out, and that's not always easy to do. So, the beat is perfect.
Saw this at the time time on OGWT, sent shivers down my spine at the time, and it still does. For me if you only ever hear one JC performance it would have to be this one.
Clearly you have cooler friends than I do. I know lots of people that are very musically savvy, yet don't know this man's work. I maintain that he is overlooked. He should absolutely be as well known as Neil Young and Paul McCartney and Bob Dylan and the other strong songwriters of our time.
Interesting version of a great song. I like the drums. If you wanted to stick some drums on a Cale solo version, you'd never think of adding that drum lick. That's what makes Cale special, I suppose. The little guitar solo by Ollie Halsall at the end is breathtaking, and that solo makes this my favourite version that I've heard so far.
[Lyrics John Cale - Dying on the Vine] I've been chasing ghosts and I don't like it I wish someone would show me where to draw the line I'd lay down my sword if you would take it And tell everyone back home I'm doing fine I was with you down in Acapulco Trading clothing for some wine Smelling like an old adobe woman Or a William Burroughs playing for lost time I was thinking about my mother I was thinking about what's mine I was living my life like a Hollywood But I was dying on the vine Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter The troops, the celebrations in the sun The authorities say my papers are all in order And if I wasn't such a coward I would run I'll see you me when all the shooting's over Meet me on the other side of town Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection It's always nice to have them hanging around I was thinking about my mother I was thinking about what's mine I was living my life like a Hollywood But I was dying, dying on the vine
John Cale is never overlooked by a discerning section. It is where he wants to be. From Velvet Underground and Lou Reed why would John Cale be anywhere other except where he is today. He is and was exceptional. a chart success was never on his radar. Listen to Golda Meyer.
@ianwilson2007 I have a huge love for the strings. Think they can make more feeling. To give Cale justice it takes a good song and pull off it many different ways. Equally both good. Agree to disagree or something lol
There was a live version with John singing with a Dutch orchestra. He walks out from backstage and joins the orchestra at his vocal cue. It's now been f***ing deleted. If you know of it then please feel free to contact me.
@zacbra - interestingly, one of the first gay men I ever met who gave me hope that my musical taste was not ENTIRELY unshared by all my fellow sodomites was and is a big John Cale fan - as am I. :)

My nine year old daugter asked me to play it again on the CD in the car ... Should've seen my smile!
That's what I call a good parent, exposing their child to such great music. 😄
My former brother in law Kevin Tooley on drums...John Cale is fabulous and humble person.
Shit I wrote that from my vatto loco's phone.
God, WHY IS THIS MAN SO OVERLOOKED? True genius.
Phenomonal performance from Ollie Halsall. May his soul rest in peace.

Autobiographical always brings the best out
The lyrics were written by Larry Sloman so not sure how autobiographical it really is.
It’s a 3/4 or 9/7 time signature. I can’t tell. Not linear. But great.

Ollie! Brilliant. One of Cales best songs
Really amazing. This different musical composition makes it even deeper.
This is an excellent tune!!
the guitarist is Ollie Halsall, one of the greatest unsung heroes of rock'n'roll
one of Cale's songs that i love most

What a song...
superbe version, magistrale Ollie!
What a jewel!
:) never thought of cale as being a hunk.
that irrelevancy aside, what an amazing talent and what a beautiful song. love cale.
Saw this the night it was broadcast. Even then it seemed a bit special.
I missed the concert in Paris on Tuesday. That's life!
Amazing

Excelente, excelente tema.
Piel de gallina, cada vez que lo escucho

Also a great tango

I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying on the vine
Who could sleep through all that noisy chatter
The troops, the celebrations in the sun
The authorities say my papers are all in order
And if I wasn't such a coward I would run
I'll see you me when all the shooting's over
Meet me on the other side of town
Yes, you can bring all your friends along for protection
It's always nice to have them hanging around
I was thinking about my mother
I was thinking about what's mine
I was living my life like a Hollywood
But I was dying, dying on the vine

I think that everything he did with Lou Reed sucked, or rather, Lou Reed did. His solo stuff is much better, five stars!
Yea but... Ed sheeran is good too .. wtf happened
