    I agree with u Paul! I made a passive power conditioner after I watched & listened ur power conditioner & to ur massive power plant video. I check multiple times to make it sure that nothing will blow up. I knew its not gonna work as good as thus on the market. But when I plug my system to it & compared to the direct wall socket, that thing made me smile.

      100% agree. Since I started doing this years ago, I've avoided some potential "backward steps" and had the ability to A/B each new component against the old one, which has brought some interesting insights that I may otherwise have missed.

    I have taken many years to slowly make changes with the prospect of improvement . . . and in the last one, I changed all my upper drivers (above the bass woofer) to planar drivers, and throughout my speakers and system, I dramatically changed it from a passive system to an active one, which I am pleased to listen to and share with others! The frustrations are learning experiences . . . and the successes -- triumphs . . . but they are all part of the fun and adventure we call "the Hobby!" as a DIY self-proclaimed Audiophile . . . accomplished through the more difficult method, wouldn't you say? For those who seek improvements and listening pleasure, but don't have the good sense to have become wealthy enough to rush out and purchase the latest and the greatest . . . but we love trying just the same . . .we just happen to be from the less popular poorer side of the audiophile family -- LOL!

    I just read an article about this topic the other day. It’s related to re-wiring the brain. A perception in different audio gear sounds on a consciousness as a thought pattern in the brain.
    Motivational aspects play a part in this process of perception aside from rational reasoning and thought processes. The brain gets re-wired to adjust to the new thought processes by the individual’s peculiarities of perception.

    Audiophiles are always striving for any improvement to the sound and to be assured there is nothing in the chain that is limiting its performance. Most of the things we can play with, cables, equipment evaluations, speaker placement, acoustic treatment etc. can be reversed which allows you to get back to where you were before making changes. Even equipment modifications. So for the most part it should not be a fear to experiment to see where improvements might be able to be made. Not sure I have ever seen anyone ever reach that pinnacle of perfection in sound.
    But with that said, the danger lies when you can’t leave the system alone and just enjoy the music. There are times you just need to forget about where you might be able to improve the sound of the system and just enjoy the music. Being the perfectionist I am, and long time audiophile, designing, setup and calibrating some of the very finest in high end audio for over 45 years I am always trying to learn and discover every aspect of what improvements can be made to get the best sound possible. Both as a music lover, and professional in the industry. I have spent my lifetime learning every aspect of sound reproduction both at the recording and mastering side to the consumer side in system design and setup. It has been my passion and pure enjoyment. I think what I find fascinating is there is no end to what can be improved upon to get that last bit of improvement in sound.
    It is rarely the case of not ever being able to get back to were you started. You can’t be afraid to experiment and see where it takes you. As Paul said, it can sometimes open the door to other things that were not recognized as a hindrance in reaching another level of music enjoyment.

    Oh man... how many times have I wished there was a CTRL-Z command after making changes to my system! But there isn't. That is why we are compelled to move forward. Driven by the hope, of at least being able to restore the previous state. To find what we lost. And then we promise ourselves that we will be satisfied afterwards and that we won't want to change anything anymore... honestly, honestly ... just this one component... this one setting... I could still try this one experiment 😉
    Long story short - This is both, the springboard for lifelong regrets, as for breakthrough innovation. Every medal has two sides. But we can't help but... to try. That’s good.

    On the specific question about upgrading a car audio system, it is a more difficult choice as any modern car is heavily DSP tuned to sound optimally with the speaker drivers and cabin acoustics involved. If it’s an older car with some mediocre system, after market options can easily beat what you have. If it’s already a good system in a newer car, I would be hesitant to change it unless it’s something I could check in another car already having gone through the update.

      You've got the nail on the head! Trying to manipulate what manufacturers do post factory amplifier is almost impossible. The only way is to intercept the signal from the source to the factory amp and go from there, however, there aren't many solutions available as of yet...

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter Рік тому

      @@andrewleonhardt1221 The modern cars are using A2B digital audio protocols to the external amp that can carry proprietary commands for balance, EQ and multiple channels of audio covering music, chimes, phone calls etc. as separate channels. Even if the amplifier is inside the head-unit, you won’t see a line output anywhere to connect your amp to. Connecting your power amp to an existing amp with down-attenuating the signal is possible but you will still have no control of the DSP audio tuning that was done against the original system. Best option is to add a subwoofer if the system lacks one unless you can replace the entire infotainment system, if such suitable upgrade unit is available fitting the dashboard.

    Striving for a better system and thus more musical enjoyment is part of being an audiophile. Personally I love the excitement and expectation that accompanies installing new kit into my system and several poor choices (and sometimes immense accompanying disappointment) haven't stopped me from experimenting. The worst hi-fi decision I ever made was selling my ProAc Future speakers in order to buy a pair of B&W speakers on the strength of reviews alone. The B&W were very exotic, very expensive and critically acclaimed by all the magazines. They also sounded terrible in my system. I'd lost my lovely sound and paid a handsome sum for the privilege.
    Where I disagree with Paul is his opinion of power conditioners - which he is always criticising. The best power conditioners which IsoTek, Audioquest and Shunyata produce, to name but a few, free up the sound wonderfully without any loss in dynamics.

    • @AT-wl9yq
      @AT-wl9yq Рік тому +1

      As least you now know why most audiophiles have had B&W speakers, and not have them. I almost bought a pair of Future Ones myself. I thought 10k was a bit too much. They did sound good but there was just nothing to them. ProAc usually makes big, heavy speakers, and the Futures were so light it made me question the purchase. I ended up spending a little more and getting a pair of Genesis, but I'm sure the ProAc's would have been a good choice even though I questioned the price.

    • @cheshireCatt
      @cheshireCatt Рік тому

      @@AT-wl9yq Yes, it was a lesson learned. I missed the old sound of my system so much that, after selling the B&Ws at a considerable loss and finally saving up enough money, I bought another pair of ProAc Futures and still have them in my system today. Over the years various transports, DACS, pre amps, power amps, conditioners, generators and cables have come and gone but the speakers have become a permanent fixture.
      Last year I did explore upgrading to newer ProAcs but when I contacted ProAc, they told me I might as well stick with the Futures which was refreshingly honest.

    If it ain't broke don't fix it!
    If you actually enjoy listening to what you currently have then STOP buying more equipment!
    Guys like Paul make their living off of guys like you by convincing you that they have the next best whoo doo and that if you buy it your system will sound better.
    BEWARE!!!
    Watch for typical sales jargon like "Just because testing shows this (power cord, power supply, power conditioner, speaker cable, amplifier, DAC, etc.) doesn't make a difference, don't pay attention to the testing, just listen and you'll hear the difference."
    Of course, you hear a difference, because you just unloaded your wallet on this (power cord, power supply, power conditioner, speaker cable, amplifier, DAC, etc.) and your brain doesn't want to admit what you did was dumb.
    Remember this Marcel in the Netherlands and anybody else in this situation.
    The equipment serves the music, the music doesn't serve the equipment.
    If you have scored a system that sounds great then stop watching "audiophile" snake oil videos and go listen to some kick a$$ music on your kick a$$ system!

    The answer is that it depends on your budget.
    If your change results in you not being happy, and you cannot afford to reverse the change, then you are screwed.
    For most of us, myself included, should think hard and carefully before making changes.
    I do a lot of research, including listening (whenever possible) to anything I consider changing, ahead of purchase.
    I took the most time researching my turntable, tone-arm, and cartridge, because I could not hear them. There was no place from where to borrow them. I was lucky and made good choices. I love how my combination sounds. But it could have easily been a source of grief.
    If you have loads of $cash, then go for any changes that interest you. The best test is to hear it in your environment. If you end up not liking it, so what? You can easily put things back. It will simply cost you something to have it put back.
    Our host can experiment to the moon. He has the resources to do so, and so he does. I envy him (in a good way). I am happy for him. He is doing exactly what I would do if I had his bank balance (I don't know what it is, but it is certainly a high multiple of mine).
