Eva is not only a natural beauty, she is a loving daughter to two amazing parents! My Dad loves my cookies and I am grateful to have him around so that I can cook for him, just as Eva must be glad to have her parents with her. Lovely video!
Oh Eva, how sweet of you to make a batch of your dad's favorite cookies at the end of this "execution". The whole video is absolutely adorable. Warms my heart to watch your family bonding together over new experiences. Thank you so much for the several minutes of pure joy! Harper, you are such a lucky person!
Eva, your dad possesses knowledge of the greatest secret of the universe: A cookie is the perfect dessert. He also knows that commercial American cookes are terrible; they are just engineered not to satisfy, but to make you want more. Papa Turi is a treasure.
Fig Newtons in Italy were sold as Strudel Saiwa, available also with an apple filling. I used to eat them as a child and my granny called them "strudelini". I have been properly sick on a train just three times in my life, once while going towards Zurich because the train car was ill-ventilated and everyone was a bit green around the gills, the other two times because I had eaten too many wafers once and too many "strudelini" the other time. Inverted sugar is a mixture of destrose and fructose whose molecule spins to the left and which never cristallizes. So essentially it's sugar syrup.
How precious. Papa Turi is a treasure. I love watching him. I can’t imagine how it must feel at his age to come to America for the first time. You are so blessed to still have your beautiful parents. Thank you for sharing them both with us ❤
"Tastes like millet" made me feel like making mr Turi try paste di meliga from Piedmont and pan mejin from Milan (which is a cross between a cookie and a dry cake). Both nowadays are made with maize, but originally they were made with millet. Indeed, millet was the poor people's grain in Italy up until the introduction of maize, and the original polenta was made with millet meal.
Your dad is cute. I just lost my Dad in November, he was an Italian American from Naples and Bari (his mom and dad). Feed your dad all the cookies for those of us who can't. My dad liked ginger snaps.
Papa Turi is delightful! I found myself trying to guess which cookies he would like and which he would not. Thank you Eva, Harper and Papa Turi.. awesome video. ❤❤❤
Eva, your dad is delightful! Gone are the days when I used to watch my great-grandparents, grandparents, and parents in their daily pursuits. It was almost like watching movies, but better. I still remember how my father would shave in the morning or wash his hands after getting home from work. Watching you watching your father, the enjoyment you had to see how he would react and your small smile when he picked up your cookie reminded me of that pleasure. Thank you for sharing that moment together - and for the recipe he delights in! There's nothing like pleasing a parent when you have this kind of connection!!
This gives me great memories of my parents and my grandparents. My dad didn’t speak Italian since my grandparents came to America way before he was born, but some of his older sisters spoke it. They had no choice because my grandmother never learned English. On the other side of the family, my grandparents never spoke English either, but my mother could speak Italian really well.
Eva and Harper, thank you so much for sharing Papa Turi’s reaction to American cookies. His facial expressions are just too cute, and I got a huge laugh from his telling you to put the Tate’s oatmeal cookies aside for later 😂 Buon Natale to your entire family, and I hope that you get the chance to introduce Papa Tori to homemade chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal cookies before he and Mama Rosa return to Dasa! Merry Christmas!
Eva, your father reminds me of my aunts and uncles on my mother’s side. Their parents were from Slovakia, and including my mother there were 9 of them. The absolute highest praise they could give a dessert was to nod gently and say solemnly, “It’s not too sweet.”
I agree with Papa Turi on Fig Newtons, one of my favorites. I make an old fashioned oatmeal cookie dough with some changes. I substitute part of the butter with peanut butter and instead of raisins I us butterscotch chips or Reese's pieces. Our grandchildren love them.
I made a cookie last night Eva that was very good and easy to make. Take two *Misura* *Multicereali* cookies, spread Peter Pan Honey Roasted creamy peanut butter between them (to make a cookie sandwich), and eat. I know how much you like peanut butter ... this cookie tastes good and maybe it's somewhat healthy too.
Well, if there were ever a way to make Papa Turi happy, this is it! The delight in his eyes and the enjoyment on his face says it all. Just keep giving him cookies as dessert and he'll be just fine! Hope all's well there! Buon appetito! E buon Natale a tutti!
Milanos are not meant to be an Italian cookie. When Pepperidge Farm made their first series of cookies, each style was named after a different European city to make them seem more sophisticated. The Milano cookie was originally named the Naples cookie (the Naples was just a single biscuit with chocolate on one side).
Watching from Melbourne Australia. This was a very enjoyable watch. I believe your dad’s idea of coffee flavoured porridge would go down a treat. He could be on a winner ❤
It's too bad you don't live in Maine anymore, I would've loved to see you guys travel to Québec and make mamma Rosa and papa Turi try a poutine for the first time!
Sooo nice to hear someone who knows about the traditional way.! And what about, with a nice dollop of salted butter stirred in, and a dash of cinnamon, and even some honey or maple syrup for a sweetener, on top of the milk😊?! Ah well, they don't have those kind of winters, in Arizona, forget it😅...!
Oatmeal with coffee in it actually tastes pretty good. I used to dump oatmeal packets into my coffee, since it was already so sweet and usually had milk in it. That said, obviously fully cooked oatmeal is better, and I don't know if the coffee would get overcooked that way. I think oatmeal with almond milk would also taste good.
Shows with Ava's parents -- especially her dad -- are the best thing on this channel. I'm British and I won't eat Oreos. Dad will hate them. He liked? I'm shocked. Should have tried Pepperidge Farm. Oh, you did! Preferred the Oreos? He's insane. Should have given him some home made Toll House cookies.
My friends... you gotta get Dad some Stella D'Oro cookies... The Breakfast Treats, The Margherites, The Swiss Fudge, The Lady Stellas, The Anisette Toast, The Angelica Goodies, The Almond Toast, The Almond Delights, The Roman Egg Biscuits... classic Italian American cookies that pair perfectly with Coffee or Espresso and practically beg to be dunked in your hot beverage... please make another video of Dad trying some of these varieties if you can... As always though.. your videos and cooking just sublime 🤗💙
Dude, search "Former Stella D'Oro cookie factory" and see what the factory in the Bronx looked like. When you drove by there the aromas from the baked cookies were incredible. It was amazing !!! The Stella D'Oro product marketed nowadays is a shadow of its former self. Almond Delights and the Roman Egg Biscuit were a favorite of mine. We actually had a friend who worked there and SHE would make my favorite spongecake ever. It was her own recipe and it's called Pan di Spagna. Amazing !!! A big Thank You to our friend Giuseppina. 🤗
Such a lovely video of you, Eva and your Pappa!! His critique of American Cookies was interesting to me. My Italian Grandmother's cookies generally tasted flat most likely because they were homemade Italian cookies unless she frosted them or made them with Anise. Non the less, your Pappa reminds me so much of my Dad. I love your video today. Enjoy your Family time. Merry Christmas! ❤️🎄❤️🎄
I would like to see how your father likes ginger snaps, snicker doodles, toll house, shortbread, oatmeal raisin, and other classic American homemade cookies.
Most Americans prefer a homemade or bakery cookie. I admit to a major affinity for Nutter Butters 😂❤. That said, I wouldn't purchase any of the other ones. Maybe Oreos to use in another recipe. He definitely deserves to try a real chocolate chip cookie ❤. He's so cute. He tries to be nice, even when he's eating the worst our country has to offer ❤
"Stop making me smell them and just hand me the damned cookies!" I was surprised that he liked the Oreos. But generally, using these mass-marketed cookies does not present the best of what American cookies can be. Chips Ahoy, for example, are among the worst chocolate chip cookies I have ever had. At least give him Pepperidge Farm farmhouse varieties of chocolate chip cookies. The fennel seed cookies would really interest me. Personally, I love oatmeal, but I never put any milk in them. When I was very young, we used to have it with milk poured on it after it is cooked, but as an adult, I have always preferred it without. My usual oatmeal is oats, water (of course), dried cranberries, chopped nuts, and topped with light brown sugar.
The only cookie I would even consider eating from a grocery store would be a pecan Sandi. Any good cookie must be made at home, with quality ingredients! I’m sure it’s much the same in Italy 😉 please tell him American has many GREAT cookies! They are all made from scratch, at home!
It's been a while since I've had Chips Ahoy, but as I recall the Chunky Chips Ahoy are less sweet. They have more chocolate, but it's a semisweet chocolate. I've got an aunt who makes biscotti with fennel and almonds. I always look forward to that during the holidays.
I loved cooking for and feeding my daddy! I loved watching eat my food and the joy and satisfaction on his face. I hope he has all the good things to eat in heaven. Right about now, it would be leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches with mayo, salt and pepper.😂😂😂. He would always come in the kitchen and ask me, "whatcha building?". He was from Bath, Maine.
I really like Papa Turi! Let him know he has a fan here in the states! He reminds me a lot of my grandfather - has a lot of the same mannerisms - and his sense of humor too. Even resembles him a little bit. What an awesome guy! I wouldn't mind seeing more of him in future videos.
nice to see evas parents in the videos, got your cookbook, love it, thank you for sharing im in montreal, quebec, canada - originally from Ribera, Ag, sicilia my husband is of calabrese descent from geggio calabria but he was born here in montreal tanti salute a tue genitore sono molti carini un abbraccio
That was the ultimate cookie lineup! Not only did Papa Turi and I agree on each cookie, but he confirmed my suspicion that certain foods that don't use the best ingredients don't taste like anything really. Also, I like how he pointed out that he wouldn't buy it - I buy Oreos but not Chips Ahoy.
I like my oatmeal with a spoonful of crunchy peanut butter, a spoonful of greek yogurt & a couple spoonfuls of maple syrup (I add cinnamon, ginger & cardamom, but if he isn't a spice guy maybe not)
I’d like to see Papa Turi do a part two cookie review of peek freans fruit creme cookies, digestive cookies, as well as maple creme cookies & shortcake & shortbread cookies
*seeing Oreos come out* ma nooooo!! Non gli Oreo! Can we do another video with some real bakery cookies 🍪 😂 I’m surprised by his reaction to Oreos though. 😂
Fennel cookies and anise cookies are delicious -- but you have to serve them to people who like fennel or anise! Otherwise, replace the fennel/anise with other flavors, like lemon or orange or a spice mixture, or just make them more of a sugar cookie. Having the fennel cookies cut into little rectangles made them look like mini-springerle, albeit without the molded pictures "springing up", or all the waiting for the dough to dry enough. Yum!
Three cheers for Papa Turi! A man after my own heart, discerning enough to know American cookies in grocery stores are a sham. Horrible tasteless little sugar bombs. He knows cookies do not go with milk, they go with coffee or espresso. Cookie bigots of the world unite! Bah~ha~ha. More Papa Turi!... and more cookie recipes😋🙏😉
Grandma made strufoli with red wine , fried dough with honey drizzled and small colored sprinkles on them. I couldn't stop eating them. Grandma was from Reggio, her maiden name was Fieorito
Eva, your dad is great! I really enjoy your channel, I’ve learned a lot. You and your family are special and enjoy a bond and history that I envy. I think we have lost a great deal of those connections and traditions here as n the U.S.. Maybe it’s just different, I don’t know… but it’s beautiful.
This is such a fun video! Welcome to America, Papa Turi 🥰 Stick with your beautiful daughter's cookies. There are very unhealthy ingredients in the processed cookies made in our Country, even in his favorite OREO cookies. Enjoy the rest of your visit!
Those fennel seed cookies sound amazing. The balance Papa Turi describes! So many American cookies range from a bit too sweet to far too sweet. Although, unlike Papa Turi, I do enjoy spices in cookies, these sound so nicely balanced. I'm not much for baking, but might need to try these.
I am SHOCKED that, of all the US cookies, Papa Turi liked the Oreos!! (Me, I found them too sweet. I did have a fondness for the Mint Milanos & Geneva 😊) Think that Eva should give shortbread or lemon bars a go. Yummy 🤤
I agree with Papa Turi on most of those cookies. But, I love animal cookies. Great on road trips. Easy to handle, not messy, mindless chewing, work with water. Try Oreo Thins for less of the filling. A better ratio in my opinion. My favorite has always been a good oatmeal cookie with raisins or dried cranberries. One of the few foods I like with raisins.
Your father is adorable! Very nice video. I am a cookie aficionado and my favorite are authentic Italian cookies. We only made them for special occasions like Christmas and there were trays and trays of them at Italian weddings - all homemade. BTW, the best packaged peanut butter sandwich cookies IMO are Back to Nature Peanut Butter Creme cookies - just sayin’!
When I was a child visiting my grandmother, I played with a neighbour child, a wee Italian girl. Her mother gave us each a cookie? I still remember the taste. As someone who loves to eat and was always hungery, I had to choke it down. Later I learned it was something called a pizzella? Years later I had an Italian friend who would offer me buscuits with tea, they were biscotti. I found them hard and dry. I started to think Italians did not like sweets. Thank you for this video.
Papa Turi has such a calm voice. Very soothing and the cookie taste test is brilliant. Thank you Papa, Eva and Harper. Just one question, is there a Mama Rosa video in the making?
I' m with Papa Turi, cookies are the best dessert! I'm American, but I don't care for the majority of national brand cookies here. Luckily I live in New York where we have tons of Italian bakeries and a lot of other kinds too. Thanks for the fennel cookie recipe. I love that kind.
I think Papa Turi deserves a homemade chocolate chip cookie.
Yes. That should be the next idea, home made and with quality butter, eggs, flour and if used, good chocolate
A toll-house cookie!
Add Girl Scout cookies to that list please.
All too sweet for the Italian palate, unfortunately. Secondo me. 🤷🏻♂️
Just reduce the sugar
It's hard to judge American cookies with prepackaged cookies. Not the same as bakery cookies. I loved the video!
Never thought Oreo's would pass the Papa Turi test!
He must've been being polite. Oreos are terrible!
IKR? Expected him to say too sweet.
That was so fun! I would love to see your Dad try Girl Scout cookies! 🥰🥰
What about Hydrox cookies?

I think double mint Oreos are great. I also think there are artisan prepackaged cookies that are absolutely out of this world. Pepperidge Farm….
Fig Newtons are supposed to be eaten dipped in tea or coffee.
You should make him some home-made American cookies! Are Harper's mother and/or grandmother still with us?
If so, why not a Battle of the In-Laws?
American cookies are too sweet, whether they are factory packaged or bakery. They can never be compared to Italian cookies. Ever.
@@brucealanwilson4121 with a glass of very cold whole milk.

A video with Papa Turi could never be bad. He's wonderful!
L’espressione di Papà Turi mentre prova un biscotto è da cinema. 😂

Try Fig "Newman's" ... a healthier version and proceeds go to charity (Paul Newman's Foundation I think)

Oatmeal is really best when it's cooked in water and then just topped with milk if you like
Savory oatmeal is very good too with chicken broth (or _any_ broth of your choice).

Loved the video! Would be intrigued by a what Papa Turi typically eats in a day type video.
I am SHOCKED that, of all the US cookies, Papa Turi liked the Oreos!!
(Me, I found them too sweet. I did have a fondness for the Mint Milanos & Geneva 😊)
Think that Eva should give shortbread or lemon bars a go.
Eva’s pronunciation of “Oreo” is also the Greek word for nice. Fitting.
Papa Turi has such a calm voice. Very soothing and the cookie taste test is brilliant. Thank you Papa, Eva and Harper. Just one question, is there a Mama Rosa video in the making?
Oatmeal with coffee 🤣🤣🤣
I would try that.
In the East Coast, here in the states, the Italian-Americans call them pepper biscuits. Same with egg and wine biscuits. They also make coffee syrup.
He needs a cup of coffee or a glass of milk.
I' m with Papa Turi, cookies are the best dessert! I'm American, but I don't care for the majority of national brand cookies here. Luckily I live in New York where we have tons of Italian bakeries and a lot of other kinds too. Thanks for the fennel cookie recipe. I love that kind.
Dad needs a glass of milk with that Oreo!
I agree with him, Fig Newtons are my favorite. lol
I love your dad so much
