that first atonal solo was the saxophone played by Walt Parazaider. He was doing a little nod to Coltrane who in his final days was very avant garde.
Is that from Walt? I've always got more Eric Dolphy vibes.

That solo was a tenor sax. Just as Jimi Hendrix and Cream era Clapton influenced guitarists, so John Coltrane developed identifiable sax techniques like overblowing, multiphonics, and use of false fingerings, which a whole generation of younger players were eager to incorporate into their playing. It was hip to be a "post Coltrane" sax player, which in a group like this would probably only be seen in solos. He said the reason for his long solos near the end of his career was that he was always looking for something he had never played before. He even influenced rock musicians like Santana and Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn, who said his 12 string solo on "Eight Miles High" was inspired by listening to Coltrane's Africa/Brass album.

This is the kinda song that grabs your soul and flies. One of my favorite songs sung by Terry Kath. James Pankow wrote some great tunes for this band.
Shame it was never played live during Terry's life :(
Lead vocal is Terry Kath(RIP). So you are going all the way with II. Cool! Introduction from Chicago Transit Authority is I think their best song ever because of all the transitions that track goes through.

@@SightAfterDark sure. You 2 play awesome music. I was really only into The Beatles as far as albums between 11-17. My band teacher played all of Chicago Transit Authority one day instead of playing we just listened to all 4 sides and I fell in love with their music. So in 1970 I bought the first 2 and played them to life. I was a trumpet and guitar player so I was really loving Chicago and then I heard more music from different bands like Cream,Led Zeppelin and The Yardbirds especially when Jeff Beck was in that band.
My first concert was Chicago 12/31/1971 in Las Vegas. Mind blowing. Their Live @ Carnegie Hall album is pretty much the same set I saw.

First solo was a sax, second was a trumpet, third was a trombone.

That's Walter (Walt Parazaider) playing the Tenor Sax on that initial instrumental solo (I think or Bari Sax) - Walt plays woodwinds on Chicago albums. His last performance with Chicago may have been at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Unfortunately, it was disclosed that Walt was suffering from Alzheimer's. Terry Kath's incredible vocals were amazing on this cut.

I wish that I could experience this one for the first time again! I love a lot of their albums but this is the one I end up listening to the most.
A lot of those Chicago songs played so far are ones I haven't heard in a long time. I have several the album's I've seen them in concert several times but I haven't listened to them in a very long time and I now have a different perspective than when I was a kid. Thanks to these reactions and being able to listen to them on a good sound system, I'm really getting to understand what a brilliant band they really are. It's not just the catchy sound, but a more mature me is understanding how ballsy and brilliant the arrangement are.
Terry Kath, besides being an AMAZING and criminally underrated guitarist, had an INCREDIBLE soulful baritone voice. Rest in peace, Terry.
On this album he also sings lead on "In The Country", "Make Me Smile", Colour My World, "Now More Than Ever" (which is a reprise of "Make Me Smile" to close out the seven movement suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon"), and the the multi-part suites "Memories Of Love" and "It Better End Soon". Chicago was very political in being against the Vietnam War and "It Better End Soon" is an R&B/funk/rock suite that is VERY political that can also have as much meaning today as it did then.

Great choice! This whole double album is amazing, and an extremely ambitious mix of Jazz and Rock. I thank whomever suggested this album and I think that you two will enjoy the diversity that this album spills out.

This song and album still sound fantastic as it was my first Chicago album that was in our home (sisters album). Just seen them for the first time a few weeks ago and still three original members playing with the band. A beautiful unique band who had a phenomenal sound…

Hey folks this is a musical masterpiece. Done before all the technology we have today. Masterful musicianship, and that particular song was off the hook as a gospel sounding funky jazzy rock vibe. That shit gives me goosebumps.. and I always preferred the Terry Cath version of the band..

Love the album, but I don't why the sound quality was so bad. To me the sound is too muffled without enough high end or sparkle. it could have been even better with a proper mix. Thanks for the video. I'll be watching you listen to the rest of it as you go.

I don't like this, never have since first hearing it in about 1970. I have never commented on anything i haven't listened to first. Perhaps you should stop throwing your teddy out of the pram everytime someone has a different opinion to you
Opinions are what they are, but this is just a small piece of the puzzle that is this album. It has its place, in my opinion.
