    A few things have me puzzled. When fully cutting and modifying the front housing, why not sort the caster as well? And why on the rear did you chose not to use the stock mounts for chassis end of trailing arm? Was the choice to go A frame because there are problems with the Watts link or to get away from the rear radius arms? All in all an awesome build that is well thought out and executed. It’s one thing to have ideas, another all together to turn into reality 👍👍

    Great to see analytical approach to mods plus, reinforcement of the chassis. While the depth and width of our Landrover's longitudinal member are generous, the 2-3mm steel thickness is inadequate. Add some corrosion and it's all a bit poor.
    We all go bolting huge bumpers made from 5+mm steel to the 2mm thick mild steel chassis, then a 9-15000lb winch on that...it needs consideration. Think about the disparity.
    I have done this plating with all of my 4x4s over the last 40+years. Landcruisers, Landrover and Range Rovers also adding additional crossmembers to increase torsional strength.

    Hi there,
    Is there a general consensus on whether a first or second gen is better? I’ve always been trying to buy a manual a td5 d2 however ive heard lately that the 1st gens are easier to work for off-roading as they have a centre diff lock and better suspension articulation. If you have an opinion on this id love to hear, cheers

    • @rosscayley8773
      @rosscayley8773 4 роки тому +1

      Get a TD5 Disco 2 - chalk and cheese on-road - the TD5 is far superior to the Tdi. The D2 is a bit bigger at the back so more practical, and better viz out the front (higher windscreen). The first few years of the D2 have the centre diff lock, just not connected, and you can aftermarket an activator (probably already done on any second hand vehicle anyway), and even with the open centre they go harder off-road standard than a disco1 modified, because of the traction control, which isn't nearly as unreliable as people claim (the common TC fault is a $2 permanent fix (wire-bypass). The last D2 models (early 04) have the centre diff lock with the actuator and are the pick models now, mainly because they are the youngest.
      The rear suspension is sorted on the D2 compared to the D1 - the Watts link setup on the D2 lowers the roll-centre compared to the D1 A-frame - much better handling results. I'm Melbourne based, use my 99 manual Td5 hard in the Alps and across Australia, and have never found the need to modify it (beyond a JDM centre-diff lock actuator, which was on it when I bought it well over 10 years ago) - its done 350k km new, engine is untouched, no problems other than routine maintenance on consumables (bar one blown cv joint thrashing it up a really difficult track, and a leaky wheel-bearing on a different axle). Even the rubber donut thing on the rear propshaft is still original ( I carry a spare, because they weigh nothing). They really are amazing off-road as a standard vehicle......my mate had to lift his 200 series 2 inches to get anywhere near the same off-road capability on stock tyres - much to his amazement. Ditto my other mate with a Patrol. And its very comfortable on-road, and a decent handler with a surprisingly low centre of gravity and roll-centre as mentioned (which is the main reason I have resisted lifting it - its still far superior to a brand new Prado or Hilux etc (which I regularly use for work) in this regard, yet with HEAPS more off-road capability stock).
