- Welcome to Inked Discussions, where we recruit the industry's top artists to define, debunk and opine on some of the hottest topics in tattooing. This week we brought in Jonboy, tattooer of the stars, to discuss one of the most controversial topics on TattooTok: tipping your artist.
If you have a topic you'd like to see artists discuss in a future video, let us know in the comments!

I have been to a shop where after my tattoo was finished and the artist was cleaning up, he slid a tip cup over towards me. And then I went into a shop where the owner/artist, was finished with my tattoo, I gave him more than what he asked for, and he handed it back to me.
The owner/artist that was upfront with being over tipped gets all my business now and the one that forces tips, will never see me again.
Tipping culture is beyond insane. If it becomes an expectation then its no longer really a tip, which should be genuinely discretionary. Just charge what you want to be paid. Ask an artist outside the US what their thoughts are on this.
Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it it's absurd to consider the "service industry" as a whole and compare yourself to a waiter. Tips in the US food industry have been normalised due to restaurants refusing to pay even minimum wage to their employees. It's almost exploitative to compare yourself to that when you set your own prices.
Tipping is nearly as widespread in Canada, and food workers here get at the very least minimum wage and very often more (sub-minimum wage is illegal). Still having to tip in that scenario feels crazy...
@@natatattWell people should resist it. Typical Canadian overpoliteness.
Yeah, I'm from Australia where we don't generally tip. I can't understand why you'd agree with someone on a price for some work they're going to do, and then they kind of expect a bit more at the end? Like, if I get a guy to mow my lawn in America, do I agree to pay him 50 bucks, but then pay him 60? I just don't get it.
I think tipping is ridiculous! The tattoo artists tell me the price they want me to pay for the tattoo. Why would I add extra to the agreed upon price? They should set their “tip” in the price of the tattoo fee they quote.
When clients ask I usually respond with '"always appreciated, never expected." When clients (especially regulars) are paying I say "please dont feel obligated to tip." If they tip, lovely, if not, perfectly fine.
I think a tip should absolutely not be expected if you’re paying $100 plus an hour and absolutely not 20 percent. If an artist chooses their rate then they should choose a rate they are happy with without a tip. If you’re getting work done by a person gave you an amazing rate or went above and beyond then sure. I absolutely hate this they’re in the service based industry tip bs, plumbers are too but you never tip them. Highly paid service people who choose their rates should not be tipped or at least expected tip.
Where I live most artists charge around $150 per hour. Tipping on top of that is asinine.
@@jordanh6439150 an hour isn't even that much
For this guy it’s more like $1000 per hour.
So I pay hundreds for a tattoo and then a tip is expected? Thats insane to me. Im in the service industry and charge a premium for my services...having the customer return is the best form of tipping to me.
At the end of the day, it’s your money to do with as you please. So there’s not really a right or wrong answer for tipping your artist. However, I don’t think a tip should ever be expected by an artist, nor do I think non tippers should be looked down upon. Especially when you set your own prices. If you were a Denny’s waitress working for $2/hr I’d feel differently.
I paid for a service, I tip for the person. I am already paying for your time, work, ability and materials. That all is the cost of the tattoo. I tip because I thought you made the experience worth the extra money.
Did I hear that right: this dude tattooed Post but then Post requested money from him? Wtf?
It was an accident
this title kind of annoys me. How can someone prepare financially for how much your tattoo will cost if you don't want to disclose how much you are going to be charging for a service.
He doesn’t want to disclose on UA-cam his rates.
Key sentence “Your not working for that tip.” Set your rates. Expect those rates. The tip is just a gift.
Nah, tipping isnt my thing. But then again, im a dutch guy living in Asia. Usually showing up with coffee, buy some lunch or dinner i think is a nice enough gesture :)
Tattoo artist give a price for his work, why should we add tip ? When a builder do his invoice for his work, did you add a tip ? that's a weird topic
I'm not tipping. At all. Ever. 8hr session costs $1500 with my artist. That's all he's getting
I always tip my artists, because I find great artists who knock themselves out to do a great tattoo for me and make the experience enjoyable from beginning to end. They are answering emails at midnight, drawing a custom piece over and over until I'm in love with it, ensuring I'm comfortable in the chair, whether that means pillows, water, snacks, bathroom breaks, etc. It's definitely a service industry, like a haircut. All that's required is that they apply a stencil and tattoo, under sanitary conditions. If they go head and shoulders above and beyond, you better believe I'm tipping. Also, you can't always say "Well, just raise your rates if you think you're owed more" because all that might mean at the end of the day is the shop is taking a bigger cut for overhead. It's not like the individual artist gets to keep the full amount.
I started getting tattoos like 5 years ago and it wasn’t until like maybe 2 yrs ago I’ve ever even heard something about tipping, even to this day I’ve never had an artist actually mention tipping them
They probably talk mad shit about when telling stories and just leave your name out.
@@fraterjr i really don’t care tbh. and seeing as I’ve been welcomed back w open arms plenty of times, I doubt it 😂
The thing with tipping your tattoo artist now is that a good artist is so expensive! So, it is weird to pay $250 to $500 per hour and then tip them afterwards - and if you go by a percentage, that is huge!
In restaurants, I tip 20% - because I have worked in a kitchen, and I know what those people go through. It is crappy work, for crappy pay, with crappy hours. A generous tip for my server is the least I can do. But a tattoo artist is living the dream (at least at a good shop)! Their schedule is flexible, they are doing what they love and have a passion for, and their regular wages are up there with the top trades in the world.
Hey! If I am a crappy sitter and I'm jumping up and causing delays and being a thorn in their side - I had better tip (which that person is actually LESS likely to tip, I'm sure!). But if I sit like a rock and took your first draft? Why am I tipping when I am going to drop thousands on my sleeve?
I dont tip. I told my artist, he should charge what he thinks is appropriate and ill pay.
@DK98123shut up you incel
Ew
Artists don’t always get 100% of what you pay. Tips go to em directly!!
I just started bringing by a nice bottle wine that I treat as a tip because I know how much my artist likes it. Tbh, I'm definitely. sure he prefers cash, but he's always excited to see what new bottle I bring for him
My next tattoo's gonna be a wild ride of emotions. That's for sure.
I tip and give my artist gifts sometimes. I just like to do it
For the bullshit Jonboy does, he shouldn't even be charging...
@@ItBurnsWhenIP_ I totally have the right to an opinion on this matter. If I think something is overpriced, like Jonboy's shitty work, you are nobody to tell me I have "no right to speak on the subject".
In Australia if I really enjoy the service and there’s a tip jar I’ll put money in but with tattoos I’d prefer the price to include the tip then I don’t need to worry about it.
I always bring a little something to my tatoo artist. A croissant, a coffee, a slice of cake, juste something to thanks him for the job he's doing. He seems happy to see me in the shop.
I’ll tip very generously on how good of job has been done, and that goes everything 😊
With my experiences - when receiving a tattoo in N. America tipping is standard - however in Central Europe, South America and Australia not typical at all. Regardless where I am - I research and prepare appropriately in advance as my brain is toast at the end of a session to calculate any numbers....
I tip 20% The fangirl in me over my tattoo artist, I am HAPPY to do it. And grateful for their time in even taking on my tat idea :)
Nah, if you can't or won't disclose how much money you're charging, you know you're charging more than you should.
I do tip in the form of getting a Personalized Tattoo Artist Monogram Metal Sign with the artist name and a tattoo machine design.
For me I feel like it depends on what situation your tattoo artist is in. If I'm going to someone who I know works in a shop I'll generally tip since I know they may have rent costs or a percentage they pay to the shop owner. If it's private I'll generally ask what their expectations are and how that factors into their rates. I don't think this is cut and dry as "yes or no", especially when you're not sure what the shops deal is with that artist. I know that one of the shops I've looked into puts pressure on their artists to charge the bare minimum to keep costs low. If I went there I would want to tip since there's other factors for renting. I know anyone can say "well don't deal with that shop" or "they should rent somewhere else", but sometimes that isn't an option for most, especially when you're just getting started. I think in the US it's important to have an honest conversation with your artist and ask rather than assume.
This guy is cool as shit
I've given a bit extra at Xmas for a bottle of whatever their drink is but no apart from that.
My tip is coming back to you and getting another tattoo. To me it sounds greedy when youre expecting tip when youre the one naming prices.
I always tip my tip my tattoo artists, especially when I really like the tattoo.
Wait wait wait, skimming past the Posty story. Was that an accident??? Was he high when he asking YOU for 1k? He's too nice to be like that so I'll be so mad if he meant it.
I hate the bullshit reasons that people say for why they charge a high price.. you charge a high price because you can and you like money 😂😂
I keep my prices high because my time is more important and i will be more patient with you and make the best piece of art but if its cheaper il just shove the stencil on anf rush it and you should still tip even tho my prices are higher ........ Ok. I tip because i know the price before hand and my artist is a babe!
I'm a hairdresser and I appreciate my clients business and loyalty and never expect a tip
As a customer/client, I think tipping is not mandatory, but I think it’s greatly appreciated by the artist(s)
I was curious, does tattoo artists or tattoo shops charge you taxes?
I have never gotten a tattoo nor i don't know many people who are heavily tattooed?
Hold up, haha….you just gonna blow over “oh turns out I paid post Malone a grand” 🤣🤣🤣
See I never get huge tattoos so I never know how much to tip. I usually go at least 30% of the bill but I feel like I never tip enough sometimes. I’m legitimately ignorant to the subject
I try to tip with great artist just enough money to Give them some money for lunch or dinner during their shift to appreciate them as artist of their craft
I tip my guy because he gives me a reduced rate to begin with
Same - and I’m a tattoo artist and I feel like when I get tattooed they charge me less - I make up by tipping what I think the work is worth. I love the people I get work from ❤ and tipping them well makes me feel good
I tipped my artist 50% the first two times just so I could establish myself as a " cool new client who tips well"
now I stick with 30% :P
This is permanent ink people! If you like what the artist does, tip!!!
Why would you tip a tatto artist? They litteraly tell you the price your gonna pay..?
I either tip, or pay for a meal together.
So I have 20 tattoos, have dealt with a handful of artists & I think this topic is suggestive. Is it an artist you met once on a vacation, is it your local artist you plan to visit multiple times, did they charge an affordable or fair hourly rate? I’ve had out of town artists go out of their way to accommodate while I was visiting, tips definitely deserved. I’ve had local artists that have seen me on multiple occasions, I bend to their schedules and needs, pay up front deposits upon idea sharing and feel it’s fair to pay the asking upon completion. I’ve never asked for change back, but have been handed back cash when the artist felt it’s too much. At this point my local guy doesn’t even give me a final price, I hand him a wad of cash and he keeps what he wants.
& for prospective, I do tip waitstaff even if the service sucked, but I remember my experiences.
I've heard for apprentices you tip $60 for a good job and $80 if it was a great experience. As an apprentice and someone who works in restaurants for years, it always baffled me people would treat a customer on how much was tipped. As a customer I'd never return when the employees who did the bare minimum would try and shake you down. As soon as I ask for tips, I've failed to do a good job. If I do get a tip it's my responsibility to figure out what earned it. Even being homeless never begged. The best tip is having the customer vote with their feet and they come back.
TL;DR: I won't ask for tips, and if they ask how much bring an extra coffee.
If you don't want to disclose how much you charge, it means you are embarrassed of what you charge..
Non-American here - I don't tip. Tattoos are already very expensive and our economy is shit. Give me a price you're willing to do the work for and I'll gladly pay for it, but tips? Nah. Just fix your pricing, don't put that sort of pressure on the client.
I have learned in this life not to skimp on tattoos and attorneys.
Here in australia we pay our workers properly so tips hardly exist here tattoos start at 160 a hour not like the USA where its so much cheaper
What is the recommended % to tip your tattoo artist? 20%?
20% on a service that might cost thousands is absurd and kind of shows the limitations of percentage based tipping imo.
For me, when I go to tip, I think about total cost of my tattoo in hours spent under the needle and how much I enjoyed the time. Like, I spent 6 hours under the needle, in an uncomfortable position, but the artist made that time enjoyable with their banter, while giving me their all artistically. I can't say any percentage because that could be a bit crazy if you are already dropping 200+ an hour, but I think about it as like, the cost of a good meal to help them wind down after all that.
I think tipping is ridiculous! The tattoo artists tell me the price they want me to pay for the tattoo. Why would I add extra to the agreed upon price? They should set their “tip” in the price of the tattoo fee they quote.
The person who mic'd him up should be ashamed of themselves...
I never spend much so I try to tip good. I remember eating by myself once at a restaurant before visiting my auntie. My bill was around $30-$40 and I left a $20. When I got a tattoo, I didn’t have much more than required. I don’t remember how much it was for my piece. Maybe around $100 something but I tipped and my total was around $160 I think. A bit small but I wanted to leave her something more because it was my first time and she was so amazing to me. 💜
Personally i prefer to tip my artist afterwards, because i understand how much work goes into the craft. Plus how many hours are spent working on my design when the artist is at home, and they are a luxury. But i get both sides, and tips should be optional not expected
lmao americans and their tipping culture. INSANE.
I have and still to this day would tip my artist. It's easy good work for long durations equals a tip it's only right..
Why tho? They literally picked the price for the tattoo for all you know they price gorge you there. Why would I tip when they picked the price?
A lot of cheapskates on here. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to get that tattoo. Quit whining.
My artist charges $275 an hour and I’m usually there for sooo many hours at a time (5-7 hours at a shot) so I do make sure to tip because they are there for HOURS pushing their best into my skin. That work will be with me for life so it’s hard to overlook that factor. It’s not a coffee, it’s not a meal, it’s for life.
Tip your artist!
Someone who is a waitress is usually making much less than minimum wage and relies on tips to earn money. An artist charging $275 an hour is making good money.
Well please tip your beloved artists, take care of your skin after and do not wear a jingly chain for your glasses it will ruin the audio of the interview.
LoL, American tipping culture is so stupid. The whole"working out a percentage" thing is utter nonsense, and it's just a shit way to justify underpaying service workers. Where I'm from, we dont tip unless we feel that we've received some "over and above" type service, and it's whatever we feel like tipping, not some stupid percentage. But we also have a minimum wage that isn't utterly ridiculous, so service workers get paid ok, even without tips.
All that aside, if I was in America I wouldn't tip a tattoo artist because they're already charging a premium price, they're not getting underpaid like wait staff at a restaurant.
