Elton John has such a distinct and well known voice that's it's honestly a really weird choice to use that much autotune. I understand if they're maybe trying to modernize his sound, but when you're using someone as famous as Elton John, you would think they'd play to his strengths and find a way to compliment how he sounds naturally rather than butcher the audio into fitting a trap beat
Exactly. It is just... so strange. You can barely recognise him. His voice can be so amazing and I hate what's been done to it in the latest songs.

i agree with your point about it being bad to write a song in 15 minutes and it reminds me of how paul mccartney wrote yesterday!! for anyone who doesn’t know, he literally woke up from a dream with the melody in his head, and because it was so easy he assumed he took it from something else. so he held onto it for months and asked around and no one claimed it so he turned it into yesterday. maybe if charlie and elton held onto their song for longer than 15 minutes they would have noticed their possible song theft!!

I'm a huge Elton fan and I have "The Lockdown Sessions" record. I have to agree; those two are some of my least favorites. I really dislike the autotune in the song, especially with Elton's voice. It just felt very...not him.
Also, it's by no means my favorite record, but I'm a collector so I have to buy everything, lol.

Reminds me of Aretha Franklin’s cover of Rolling in the Deep that she did in her 70’s, the autotune on it is DREADFUL and completely ruins her angelic voice and subsequently the whole song. There’s a live performance of it which is 10x better than the recorded version. A good example of Elton John working with a modern artist is Save Rock and Roll which he did with Fall Out Boy, a piano driven ballad which isn’t too far out of his comfort zone.

It feels like you've been handed a lush platter of beautifully crisp and soft bread, coated with soft, smooth butter, so fresh it's still warm, and you ignore that, and choose the dry, stale, ASDA's own brand stale bread that was incorrectly wrapped. Personal opinion: key changes are super fun to sing especially in musicals and choirs
I didn’t know people thought they were bad. I liked that bit he played and didn’t understand the issue with it tbh. I’m no music expert or anything but I actually find some of James’s music a little “flat” sounding (might not be the best word choice for the issue I have, idk) and something like a key change might improve some of his music (though I don’t think that’s the only way to make it feel less “flat” to me). I think more variation in his singing in general might help the sound. Again though, I’m no music expert.
Normally I wouldn’t be writing a critique under someone’s video like this but he’s clearly got no issue commenting about other artist’s so I figure this opinion isn’t inappropriate to share here.

I don't think this is the case at all. Elton John doesn't have to fight for musical relevance because hello, he's fucking _Elton John_ . He collaborates with younger artists because it seems he's genuinely interested and excited by the progress of music, and he demonstrates his approval by working with up-and-coming artists. Other folks in the comments have mentioned his slightly older collabs with Fall Out Boy and Gorillaz, both of which I forgot were Elton John features because he fits in so cleanly. He just happened to have a few collaborators this time around that his songwriting ethos doesn't mesh well with.

I love Elton John, but this album was hit-or-miss. I really liked Finish Line for example. His earlier collaboration with Ozzy Osborne was good too. But either some artists pushed their vision too much in this collaboration or Elton pushed his vision not enough. The visions don't always mash well.
