  • Better Sponge is advertised as "The Most Incredible Sponge You've Ever Experienced." Today I put it to the test to see if it lives up to the advertising hype. In the end, it seems to be a pretty good scrubber, but I'm not sure it should be called a sponge. I picked up a Better Sponge 3-pack at a Bed Bath & Beyond for $15. Keep an eye out for cameo appearances by the Hurricane Fur Wizard and Red Copper Pan.

The disadvantage of an ordinary sponge is that it holds onto moisture and grows bacteria and has to be thrown away. I guess this is their idea of a solution.

Great video. I think the point of it not absorbing water is so it can't get soiled by bacteria and such like typical sponges and wash clothes. This is actually something ideal for me as I hate using sponges and wash clothes because they eventually start to smell even after being sanitized and run through the washing machine.

James, Great review and you "hit the nail squarely on the head!" I purchased just the orange Better Sponge at a local T.J. Max a few weeks back. My immediate discovery was that there is absolutely one function that is missing and makes the Better Sponge less than desirable for kitchen use, and that is it's total lack of liquid absorbency! That said I have discovered a perfect use for the Better Sponge and that is for showering! I find that just a small amount of moisturizing bath and body soap put onto the sponge will create a great lather that can last to wash every bit of your body and it also feels great! Once you are down washing down with it it only takes a few seconds under the shower head and the Better Sponge is totally rinsed of all soap and left in the tub, it dries and will not mold! I decided to try this because i was tired of trying to get all of the soap out of the wash cloth when I was done washing myself! It seemed to take forever to get the wash cloth soap free! I now use my wash cloth dry just to wipe off the water prior to stepping out of the shower and drying off with a bath towel. i think that using the Better Sponge when taking a shower is a great way to use the Better Sponge!

Try this one. I just saw this review today. It's a silicone sponge that is built to have better absorbency. So you can get everything you seek in a good sponge all in one.

Great review! I would have added that the absorbent qualities of regular sponges have a negative side-effect in that they hold bacteria and over time begin to smell and potentially spread germs.

I won these in a contest. My suction cups didn't hold it up well they always fell by morning. And the purple one got a tear after a week. I did like feeling the orange one. The green one is the best out of 3. One thing that bugs me is they dont take the oily feeling off well. I ended up using more soap then normal.

Look at you with your fancy new intro with the backdrop! Very nice! I bought a silicone sponge a few months ago from the WISH app. I wasn't impressed. It was awkward to wash with and I didn't think it scrubbed that much better than a regular sponge. I liked the fact that it didn't hold on to odors and food particles and was easy to sanitize. But I found myself reaching for a regular sponge more

I have used other ‘sponges’ of this type and continue to. You are correct in that they don’t absorb but, when washing dishes and scrubbing caked on food, that isn’t necessary. Also a major plus to these silicone sponges is that they do not harbor the bacteria like regular sponges and that is a high five for my household! I also use this type to exfoliate my skin in the shower. Again, the plus that they do not harbor bacteria, they lather nicely and get rid of dead skin cells without tearing the skin apart.

  • @gails8877
    @gails8877 6 років тому +7

I got my silicone sponge today. I fluked on to your review but I stopped and watched. I agreed with your review mostly. The moisture removal can be handled by a paper towel, which is worth it to dispose of the obsolete sponge for the odor, germs & appearance alone. I already had a few silcone pot holders and a silicone grip to open jars. Both items are great. I am an old lady and have not gone next door to have one of the kids open a jar for me in a long time. The pot holder is a no brainer. I was already using silicone baking items.
My silicone items overlap because they presented themselves as smart people thought of new was to use them. I prefer items that come with suction cups. I love the color selections. Mostly I like the clean appearance.vs old ragged sponges and scorched pot holders. But I was the 1st person on my street to own a microwave oven. I guess I just like new things.

I actually use something similar to this from Amazon, it looks like the orange one, in the shower instead of a wash cloth or loofah thing. I like that i just rinse it in hot water and it's clean and never really needs replaced or thrown in the laundry. Works for me pretty well for that use, though I probably wouldn't want one for kitchen use it just seems too soft to do any real cleaning.

I have another "sponge" like the very same green one in the video, but as a smaller hourglass like shape. I find it works terrific on a new pot/pan that I want to keep looking new, except for any gas burner scratches on the bottom, which are hard to avoid. I accept that it's not absorbent and that it doesn't matter considering it's the right tool for the job, so to speak. I apply foam soap directly on the sponge and easily scrub away without ANY surface scratching. As a further step to keep cookware looking sparkling new, I use Bon Ami or Bar Keeper's Friend on my sponge to form a paste applied in circles, let it sit for a minute or more, rinse, and behold a restored new shiny finish. Beyond that, I typically have not much use for it. But it's a perfect tool for my intended use, without a doubt. For more stuck on bits I use a plastic scrub brush with a scraper edge, which is a great tool for that first pass cleaning job. My "sponge" does the rest. Great combo! So when I bought a new All-Clad fry pan, this technique is what I've been using ever since. Looks brand new all the time!

I agree, it's more of a scouring pad than a sponge. It's great when you need to scrub on items you don't want to scratch, like non-stick pans or China. It also lasts a long time and never stinks. It's great for cast iron, but and even stove tops, but you need to follow up with a paper towel.

Being a cleaner and having experience with many many different kinds of brushes (both the kitchen type and the toilet type) at many office buildings, i can say without a doubt that silicone brushes are a TERRIBLE DESIGN as they are far too soft to remove any "Sticky" or "Resilient" and dried out "Stuff" that would take a regular plastic bristled brush moments to remove.

Excellent review. It was helpful to see the comparisons. I have to say I am disappointed with scrubbing ability of the Better Sponge on bake ware, such as with a lasagna pan. I had to scrub the daylights out of it with the Better Sponge and still was unable to get it clean. The conventional sponge with the scouring pad did a better job with less effort. I'm sure if I let the pan soak, the Better Sponge may have worked fine but you don't always have the time to let things soak.

I hated those sponges. We wash one dish at a time, so they don't hold any soap. Did pick up some food deep down and then molded. Not good

So I had gotten the 5-inch round version a few years ago, larger and round, at the Tree Store Where Everything Used To Be A Dollar. I wish I’d gotten more because they don’t carry them anymore. I never used it for cleaning dishes or pans; rather I found it very nice in the shower to exfoliate my skin from time to time. It holds soap suds or body wash gel, and comfortably scrubs my skin without being harsh. I even use it on my face and occasionally other areas. Always rinses clean and no smell.
I bought several more on The ‘Zon last week and tried them for different uses.
One of them I tried for scrubbing a stainless steel pan, and also tried n my kitchen counter. Not so scrubby and not very effective on stuck-on food stains. Not very absorbent for liquid spills or n the counter top.
I tried another in the shower. Nice for exfoliating like my current one, but a bit too small for my liking.
One other use I found was for stroking my cat to remove excess fur. It was ok at this, it didn’t pull out as much as a brush , but my kitty seems to enjoy it. (Probably simulates another cat’s tongue licking it? 😄) I could have seen maybe using this almost every day, but the loaded up hair is very difficult to get out.
I also tried this on my couch which had excess cat hair; again it picked up ok (not great), but was difficult to clean out afterwards.

Thank you for testing this out. I just saw the commercial and my new product radar went off. I think I'll pass, thank you for saving me money. Better Sponge isn't better than a sponge😊

Nah. I swear by Dobie Pads for cleaning. I like silicone for baking, but I need something that will hold soap for cleaning.

The trick about those sponges is not to apply pressure but let the silicone brushes do their work
I prefer these sponges for hand scrubbing which exfoliates and gets bacterial between fingers and light brushing under the nails (finer and the big orange one). They are what I used pre-virus quarantine and continued after it. Great facial and lips exfoliant too (finer brush one). I buy the regular kitchen ones for my make-up cleaning brushes too. It's cheaper than having the classification for make-up
I keep on for freshening up pet water bowls too

The nice thing about these sponges is that you can throw them in the washing machine and wash them with hot water.

I stick to my brush with handle which does the same job. at least I can keep one hand dry , at a fraction of the cost. LOL
will be useful if they do one on regular handle so I can do away with the sponge.

This is the reason i just ordered mine, a regular sponge just get broken when you have to scrub those pans, these seem like a nice solution for that.

I have similar silicon to collect the pet hair and it works very well but the way you use the sponge on the sofa you cannot expect you to get them all.

You should try sanitizing the counters with it like spray the counter and use the sponge to clean. Or even make a mess with like coffee rings and see if it can clean the mess. I clean for a living and I was wondering if they would be good for counters. 😁 I love your reviews.

I love my silicon sponges for doing the dishes. The fact they can be put in the dishwasher to sanitize them is perfect. Regular sponges get so gross after just a few uses.

My concern is that this doesn't make suds. Suds are what lifts grease and debris. Looks like a lot of the water is just falling off the silicone "sponge."

Some of these tests are a bit unfair as even sponges/scrub brushes wouldn't be able to remove dried-on malt-o-meal, etc. off dishes. That's what soaking is for. It's misleading too that they are called Better "Sponge" - to me, sponge implies absorbant, which they obviously wouldn't be. They should be called Better Scrubbers.
