Hi Alex, thank you for all the wonderful content, I really appreciate it. I saw that someone else asked about the tuning before, I also learned to tune A C D G E, my question is, which tuning is more common? I read that you tune it with the F to relate with the Kora, but are most of the traditional N'goni rhythms using the tuning with the F, or the E? Thank you.
Hi there, there's no particular rule, it mostly depends either on the instrument or the singer you're playing with. I play kora, so F major (I'll continue in minor mode, so D minor pentatonic) make more sense for me. My master have one ngoni in A that he adjust a bit lower and higher depending on the singer and another one in D (like mine). Yoro Diallo also play D on some recordings. In Burkina, they play with the bala pentatonic, so mostly B or F# minor, Oumou Sangare have some songs where the bass string of the 6 strings is in C... As you see, there's no precise rule, it's more a matter of purpose or sound. Hope it helps, Alex
@@WassolonGroove Thank you very much for the clarification, I appreciate it. and much respect for spreading knowledge and awareness for this beautiful instrument and culture.
Bueno, depende del fabricante. En Mali no tienen muchas opciones, así que hacen con lo que tienen. En mi caso, utilizo diferentes tipos de calibre y material para realizar la configuración del instrumento que produzco según el modelo.
Hey Dorien, in fact it's just a simple transposition. Your tuning would lead to play a song in A minor pentatonic, for example. By tuning A-C-D-F-C, we would play the minor pentatonic in D instead of A. In my case, the main purpose is to have my basic tuning in the same pitch as the kora. Traditional has at least 5 basic tuning and also some micro tonic scales. If you like to study deeper, I'd suggest contacting me personally for access to the 22 workshops already done and some more under production 😉
Hi there, don't panic! ;) Only difference is that you have two extra bass (F,G) if u start from the bass in your diagram. I start my tuning from A, third string in your case and here we play on D, 5th string in your case. So you can keep the same tunng, just consider that I play one range higher than you and that I've two extra high strings for the solo, but in this case it's not really important. If you need some more assistance, we can eventually consider whatsapp guidance. Hope it helps ;)
Ciao sorella, you can download the video and transpose using VLC (extended settings/advanced, click enable, then minus 3 semitones), tune your ngoni F# A B D E, that's it. You can as well order a pro instrument directly at wassolongroove@gmail.com. Hope it helps, Alex

Hi Alex, thank you! I was wondering, I have learnt to tune it like this: A - C - D - E - G
You know why this is different? F in stead of E?
