I have one made for Sears by Whirlpool same model. Was here when I moved in in 2003 and still going.I have replaced the belt,wigwag solenoid switch and just last year put in a new waterpump and it still goes. These were made real well and at a time when they would come to your house and service and fix them & as you mentioned made real good & to last. Instead of use it for five years or so and buy another dont like all that high tech electronic crap on new machines. High Tech = made not too last. Dont ever throw it out just keep fixing very simple to maintain & common wearable parts are available online .Good Luck!.Glenn
That’s incredible!. My mom had a miniature washer and dryer and I think it was that one or one very similar. So now as I’ve been looking for an apartment size washer and dryer, I keep thinking I need to find those little miniature super powerful washers. I really wish they would make them like that now. I like those analog buttons and none of that digital stuff. I protest that washers and dryer should be made exactly the way they used to be!

I had exactly the same machine. I would put the soap in the tub. Use the agitator for fab sofener...And bleach! Excellent machine I all so had matching dryer!
It’s only new front loaders that don’t use enough water. Vintage ones used a lot more and did a far better job at cleaning, much better than any top loader or newer front loader. Top load just can’t get the stains. Look up some old pre eco UK washers. They were much better. Hotpoint Aquarius WM Series. Zanussi Jet System, Hoover Logic, Hoover Keymatic.
It's is so ironic that things we took for granted for nearly 100 years are now gone. Now people are all over the internet waxing poetic about 90 year old tech. Now don't get me wrong, I have an old whirlpool and a 2017 speed queen. You would think the g e would pull this design off motg balls. They wud sale like hot cakes. They stopped by making these because they lasted to long and needed almost no mantanace.
I have been repairing appliances for 25 years now. And this unit is the same miniature unit that they use on the 24 in wide stackables. It is technically not a GE but a Whirlpool made unit
Reminds me of my 1980’s Kenmore portable belt drive washer, and mine has the lint filter in the upper right hand corner. Mine is apart at the moment, but it did work well last time I used it.
I actually have this exact washer and the matching dryer for sale. They were manufactured in the mid-90's. When I started taking them apart for cleaning in preparation for sale, I instantly recognized that it was all Whirlpool parts, as you said. The water actually does pour in from a hose at the top of the drum, in between the outer drum and the inner basket. I wonder if it came from the factory with the wood grain vinyl, or if someone put that on. Cool video!
The middle fill on the agitator is usually for fabric softener, cause when the machine does the first spin cycle it whips the fabric softener out of the center bucket inside and drips down the middle to the "vents" on the agitator and sprays it all over the clothes, a lot of people don't seem to know this, just thought I would say it for once 😃
Haha yeah when I first got it, I was totally wrong about the detergent and fabric softener dispenser. I just add the detergent to the tub now. Washer works very well! Still going strong.
@@VacTech1 Haha I get it, I bought a Whirlpool portable washer Model LCR7244HQ2 2.0 Cu and the Fabric softener dispenser was full of hardened powder detergent that took me like 1 hour to completely get out.
This machines knew that you have to use the maximum amount of water to actually clean clothes. Also, with direct drive (no transmission) and analog contrrols, this washer was virtually bulletproof. GE stopped having Whirlpool make these for them because there wasn't any "Planned Obsolesence". IN other words, this washer right here is probably 35 to 40 years old. No profit in a washer that, under normal use, never wears out. I am currently working to get a slightly later but still analog controlled version...GE still sells Spacemaker models, but they are VERY expensive and problem prone
That is so clever how it drains the water out. After you hooked up the hose to the faucet I was wondering where the drain hose was. I was thinking oh wow he forgot. But that is very clever.
I had the Whirlpool version (exactly the same only cosmetics). Whirlpool made the Kenmore/GE version of this direct drive (no belts) machine it is an excellent machine definitely will outlast any portable built today. They also do spray rinses after the wash cycle and the rinse cycle during the spins. They spin at a higher speed than the standard version but have the same horsepower motor and transmission just with a smaller wash tub. They are definitely built like tanks. I have to ask you what happened to the Danby it finally kicked the bucket? The soap should go directly into the tub by the way if you print up the instruction manual they’ll tell you that. That cap was designed to come off and a fabric softener dispenser would go in there you could probably find one off of eBay. I have tried several until I found the right one is has to be shallow due to that bump up in the cap bottom.

I wonder why newer models don't use the same adapter inlet/outlet clip as this. Why did they switch to separate hoses? my Portable dishwashers both have this same plastic adapter as this washer.
1986 was the year Kenmore/Whirlpool started to transition to direct drive washers. They still sold belt drive Models in 1986 as well. This unit is probably in this age range.
@@fargeeks The belt drive washers were built well, but they had more moving parts. The direct drive washers for the most part last longer because the motor (dual shaft) is connected at one end to the pump and the other end to the transmission. I grew up in a large family and we had a belt drive and wore that out and a used direct drive washer which lasted a little longer from that time period. In 98 I bought a direct drive for the family and ended up giving it away in 2009. It was finally put out to the curve in 2014 when the timer broke. It probably would still be going if I had replaced the timer in it, which is not an expensive or hard repair.
Yeah, that machine is a tank. It should last another 30 years. However, if anything does go wrong with it, parts are very plentiful and cheap, and very simple to repair. As this machine is built on the same platform as the regular sized whirlpool direct drives.
It would be interesting if you could show the lower mechanics of this machine. Brand engineering is common where one brand will buy from another or the same machine appears as various brands within the same company. GE bought these compact washers and laundry systems from Whirlpool, and front load washers from Frigidaire, and even top load washers from Amana at one time. Whirlpool often takes a machine and markets it as a Whirlpool, Maytag, Roper, Amana, and whatever other brand they want to take out of their library, while also selling to Sears as Kenmore.
That's interesting. Surprised they didn't hold up, this one still runs flawlessly and gets a lot of use. Not laundromat-tier, but I use it every week haha.
I did find out that the center post is for fabric softener, however it requires an additional attachment. The center post has holes in it, allowing water to get in there, so the soap comes out in the first cycle without the adapter.
I have pretty much the same washer, I have a question, how do you know when to turn the water Off? It requires so much water, the instructions given to me stated to leave the water faucet on until the load finished, but I don't want to do that because I'm trying to prevent a high water bill, my timer for the washes are very slow, I did a small wash, the timer stated 40 minutes, it took much longer than that, I had to turn it off and switch it to the spin cycle to speed things up, and I turned the water off at the halfway mark (20 minutes). I'm trying to figure out a way to let the water run until it fills up, knowing when to turn the water back on once it reaches the rinse cycle I'm which it doesn't tell me lol I can use some pointers, my GE Spacemaker is the digital version, everything else is the same

If someone has room for full size, the Maytag Commercial top load agitator is top rated, and works like the old conventionals did... Speed Queen makes a new old school center post agitator washing machine too...

This machine can't be older than 1981 unless Whirlpool built them sooner for GE, which is unlikely. The serial number is coded for the manufacture date (could be Whirlpool coding syntax or GE coding syntax).

I do prefer this over the Danby. It holds a little more clothes, cleans well, and is very heavy duty. The Danby though has been great, and I like that the Danby does 2 rinses instead of 1, which I feel is more effective at getting all the detergent out. I think the danbys spin cycle is faster as well.

@@cicisteed3234 hello! Well if you want to disable the lid safety switch, you have to remove the panel behind the lid by taking out the screws on the back at the top. The switch is under there.

I have GE Spacemaker Washer very similar to this video. It's probably 30 years old. It just stopped draining water. It's probably the water pump and it is leaking from the bottom. I'm thinking it might be worth fixing. Wonder if a compatible water pump is still on the market for purchase.
The parts these used were widely available for decades. Hopefully there's an appliance repair shop in your area that can get it working again. Worth saving if you can. Might still have a lot of life left to it.
I just bought an old portable whirlpool like this and I was wondering where do you put bleach? There's not compartiment for that. Do you fill it with the detergent in the tube?
That's a good question! I never use bleach, as it's a very toxic chemical. If you use it, I would just add it with the detergent, by dumping it into the tub along with the detergent (not the center like I did in this vid). If you have to use bleach, a little goes a long way, so don't add too much, as it's unsafe to have to "wear" it, after you do laundry. Thanks for watching!
Hey I wanted your opinion I found a person thats selling a whirlpool version of this washer is it worth buying with it being far and in good condition or buying a new washer because I use it on a weekly basis and my Danby stopped spinning in 2 years of use but I know the older machines are better in performance
As long as it works, I think the Whirlpool would be a great option. They're very reliable and clean well. Mine has worked without any issues since I bought it.
James Orsby Yes it does, three spray rinses after the wash cycle and three spray rinses after the rinse cycle on the normal wash. You would be surprised at the suds that comes out of the drain after each spray rinse.

James Orsby Yes I think he did cut the video somewhat you can hear it if you listen on the final spin it’s a little hard to hear because of the water that was draining into the sink but it’s there I had to confirm it with myself a couple of times
James Orsby Just checked it again at the very end he flashes to the sink you will notice that the fill hose shakes that was the water going into the machine during the spray rinse and then stopping then he cuts to the end after the spray rinses are over. Lol.
petermazbabie Yep, I checked again too. This time, I transferred the video from my iPad Pro to my big screen tv, and I still didn’t see the spray rinses. Yeah, he did some serious editing, but sometimes people have to do what they can to assure that they don’t run out of time, or battery life...understandable.
The portables were faster than the full sized even though they have the same transmission and 1/2 hp motor used on the full-size washer the gearing was set up so that It could spin faster due to the 110 V dryer.
CBF1 The full-size whirlpool family was known for being slow spinners even the older belt drives I would think 500 to 600 tops the Portables were closer to 800.

That is an early 90s machine as the control panel uses the GE livery that begaen around 1990 when GE phased out the General Electric name, leaving only the GE logo; as well as using the slanted typeface for descriptors and their Good Things slogan. Btw, you should check out and join www.automaticwasher.org; it's a vintage appliance lover's paradise. If you posted the model and serial number online, someone out there would definitely decode the month and year of manufacture. A nice machine indeed, you have!
Hotpoint2005 it could be a mid 80’s the direct drive came out around 1984-1985 and stayed around until 2011. Based on the styling of this machine, I’d say it was made in the mid to late 80’s, possibly early 90’s. All 70’s whirlpool/kenmore washers had a belt drive transmission. Without a doubt, this washer is a direct drive.
They are exactly the same machines except the Kenmore uses the corkscrew duel action agitator. My whirlpool version of this is about 35 years old and works like the day it came out of the box.
I find agitator washers clean better than the newer washers without an agitator.

My mom had the non portable version of this new in 1992. She used it until 2018 and it worked great. How did you bypass the lid switch?
The agitator looks a lot like a old whirlpool
This is not a GE washer all of the parts .. ie agitator and lid are Whirlpool parts and even the agitation is like the Whirlpool wash action
Your soap is in rinse cycle as you add soap first that center part is for fabric softner

I have GE Spacemaker Washer very similar to this video. It's probably 30 years old. It just stopped draining water. It's probably the water pump and it is leaking from the bottom. I'm thinking it might be worth fixing. Wonder if a compatible water pump is still on the market for purchase.
The parts these used were widely available for decades. Hopefully there's an appliance repair shop in your area that can get it working again. Worth saving if you can. Might still have a lot of life left to it.

I just bought an old portable whirlpool like this and I was wondering where do you put bleach? There's not compartiment for that. Do you fill it with the detergent in the tube?
That's a good question! I never use bleach, as it's a very toxic chemical. If you use it, I would just add it with the detergent, by dumping it into the tub along with the detergent (not the center like I did in this vid). If you have to use bleach, a little goes a long way, so don't add too much, as it's unsafe to have to "wear" it, after you do laundry. Thanks for watching!
Hey I wanted your opinion I found a person thats selling a whirlpool version of this washer is it worth buying with it being far and in good condition or buying a new washer because I use it on a weekly basis and my Danby stopped spinning in 2 years of use but I know the older machines are better in performance
As long as it works, I think the Whirlpool would be a great option. They're very reliable and clean well. Mine has worked without any issues since I bought it.

So, since this machine fills up from the bottom, it doesn't spray rinse in the final spin like the regular Whirlpool DD washers do... that's not good.
James Orsby Yes it does, three spray rinses after the wash cycle and three spray rinses after the rinse cycle on the normal wash. You would be surprised at the suds that comes out of the drain after each spray rinse.
petermazbabie 🤔🤔🤔 He must had cut the water off during the spin cycles, because I didn’t see one spray rinse, and I watched the video on a 13 inch iPad.
James Orsby Yes I think he did cut the video somewhat you can hear it if you listen on the final spin it’s a little hard to hear because of the water that was draining into the sink but it’s there I had to confirm it with myself a couple of times
James Orsby Just checked it again at the very end he flashes to the sink you will notice that the fill hose shakes that was the water going into the machine during the spray rinse and then stopping then he cuts to the end after the spray rinses are over. Lol.
petermazbabie Yep, I checked again too. This time, I transferred the video from my iPad Pro to my big screen tv, and I still didn’t see the spray rinses. Yeah, he did some serious editing, but sometimes people have to do what they can to assure that they don’t run out of time, or battery life...understandable.

The portables were faster than the full sized even though they have the same transmission and 1/2 hp motor used on the full-size washer the gearing was set up so that It could spin faster due to the 110 V dryer.

CBF1 The full-size whirlpool family was known for being slow spinners even the older belt drives I would think 500 to 600 tops the Portables were closer to 800.

That is an early 90s machine as the control panel uses the GE livery that begaen around 1990 when GE phased out the General Electric name, leaving only the GE logo; as well as using the slanted typeface for descriptors and their Good Things slogan. Btw, you should check out and join www.automaticwasher.org; it's a vintage appliance lover's paradise. If you posted the model and serial number online, someone out there would definitely decode the month and year of manufacture. A nice machine indeed, you have!
Hotpoint2005 it could be a mid 80’s the direct drive came out around 1984-1985 and stayed around until 2011. Based on the styling of this machine, I’d say it was made in the mid to late 80’s, possibly early 90’s. All 70’s whirlpool/kenmore washers had a belt drive transmission. Without a doubt, this washer is a direct drive.
Our first Whirlpool DD super capacity washer we bought in 1988 had the larger version of this agitator. This is definitely late 80s- early 90s.
The kenmore version isn’t worth three cents.
It’ll dance across the floor even if it’s secure.
You’ll be lucky if it last two years.
Its lasted 30 years already. Maybe this GE is more reliable.
I have one from 1984 And it runs like a top.
They are exactly the same machines except the Kenmore uses the corkscrew duel action agitator. My whirlpool version of this is about 35 years old and works like the day it came out of the box.
