How to install a Winters Shifter

- This video shows you everything you want to know about purchasing and how to install a Winters Shifter. We are using the Winters Shifter on our race trucks named Honcho and Lefty. Both trucks will get a TH400. After installing this shifter on Honcho, I am very impressed with the quality of this shifter and it is now obvious to me why so many builders chose these for their cars.

This whole shifter design is unbelievably smart from the manufacturer's standpoint. So many parts are pretty well universal, and then the gate actually makes the shifter. Makes deciding just that much harder to do now.

Hey Dave, have you considered hard mounting your engine and transmission to the frame and using a mid plate between the block and bell housing? It might help with that rear transmission mount breaking.
I have, but am still holding on to the beliefs that I can find a budget friendly solution. Before the Mint 400 I fabricated additional braces that connect between the cage and the back of the heads to resist any forward movement. Working well so far. Baja will be the real test.

I guess you would have to use one of the other positions for that swinging nut under the shifter if you changed the angle of the cable mount brackets, as in perpendicular or 90 degrees from stock. I suppose that keeps the indexing the same. Does that sound right? Thanks.
Thanks for posting! The “directions” that come with the shifter are very inadequate.. there is no mention/diagram of the cable mounting up at h the shifter handle. I’m going to mention this to them in person.. otherwise, it’s a great, solid shifter!

Does the transmission has to be built on reverse pattern or something like that?
We order transmissions with reverse valve bodies. We then match the shifter gate to the reverse pattern. You could have a normal PRND21 pattern with the correct gate. Come to think of it…I think it is the same gate with a different sticker showing which gear you selected.

Does the washer have to be installed on the spring or is a preference thing?
No…they just recommend it for shift feel. You never have to drop the pan to install this shifter. I did because it was on my stand.
