I'm a swim instructor and I recommend checking with your local pool if they have a mermaid training course. And Ginny Di your form is better then some competitive swimmers I've worked with. Dolphin kicks are a pain.

Most modern smartphones can film in high definition! Although, yes, if you are not using a smartphone, this trick certainly doesn't work. Sorry!
Hints from a scuba diver / field biologist who regularly puts camera gear underwater:
1) silica gel bags (aka "Do Not Eats") or dessicant strips can be put inside the bag / case with the camera to make sure any condensing moisture inside the case is absorbed into them before it gets into the camera
2) GoPros are what we use for underwater shooting for most of our videos / photos. Even if your phone says it can take being submerged, experience teaches that results can... vary wildly. In general minus at least half of what the producer promises unless the gear is specifically meant for underwater use (aka scuba gear etc.). If a piece of gear claims to be good to 10 m depth, it can just about take 1-2 meters safely. If it says it can take 1 meter, it is basically just splash proof. Definitely at least put it in a bag if you take a phone underwater. I've taken some phones underwater without a bag, and... sometimes they survive it, sometimes they don't.

I’ve been using my iPhone in a waterproof case to take mermaid videos as well! The videos come out surprisingly well such a good money saver

This was fascinating! I loved the music video, and watching all the hard work and different pieces that came together to make it was really interesting. I know a lot of the people who criticised technique were probably just trying to be helpful, but honestly, the fact that you did this at all is SO freaking impressive, you don't deserve anything but the most effusive praise.
I trained in SFX makeup a long time ago, and we did a whole thing about synchronized swimming makeup, it was really cool to see you talk about what you decided to do without access to specialist makeup. The final footage looks great, well done Ginny, great work as usual!
Great video! And I can't quite explain why, but Josh's choice of floaty to use as a camera stabilizer gave me great joy.
This is so good! I love the combo of pragmatism & inspiration that your tutorials always have. (And I'm a sucker for the behind-the-scenes anything. I was that person who LOVED the second disc in the DVD box and often watched it more than the movie as a kid)
But really, it's all your tutorials. They've got lots of really helpful tips and the "you don't have to be perfect to share your creation" philosophy really comes through in all of them (not just this one where you outright say it) which is, I think, part of why I love them so much.

I'm never going to be the person teaching extremely specific, highly trained skills or anything... but being willing to explore and experiment and be "just okay" at things has enabled me to create SO much and surprise myself so many times, I want to share that if I can!!

On your swimming form, yes it may not have been perfect but after all most people walk and run differently so why should that not apply to mermaids. My family and especially my niece (who has been mermaid crazy since she first watch little mermaid) thought you where great and my mermaid expert had no complaints and thought you where fantastic.

I don’t ever plan on filming a mermaid but I can justify watching this video as work because you never know. Man being a videographer has it benefits some times.

And the advice about not needing to be perfect first time... sigh ... wish I'd listened to that when I was younger - SO MANY projects I gave up on because it wasn't perfect (even after people said stuff was good!) I really appreciated this! Fun, amazingly talented, informative and It's SO nice to hear that whatever you're creating doesn't have to be perfect. Especially from Ginny. I have stuff I tried to film (not mermaid) and I'm struggling with no experience to loop together audio and video from 3 different sources and outfit issues. You get so much pressure that if it's not perfect it won't be good enough and you shouldn't bother. I needed this lol

These tips are very useful! As well as not waiting for perfection or mastery to create. I lived the clear structure and planned layout for this video as well as the clear structure and plan for how you filmed the mearmaid video LOL. Great examples of planning/scripting for maximum efficiency. Keep up the great stuff.

Swam in a friend’s mermaid tail that gapped around the hips and that sucker filled with water so fast. I was thankful we were just in a shallow pool, I only had to stand up. Ginny you have big guts swimming with a tail in open water 💪

I don't think you mentioned it, but I'm guessing the singing shots were done out of the water against a black background with a watery effect overlaid.
Very nicely done! I appreciate your comments about perfection, or lack thereof! I frequently find myself debating whether to share one of my own videos, knowing where the imperfections are. But then I realize, that most of the time, people aren't going to notice if I fumble a chord, sing a little flat, or even skip an entire verse!

Don't worry, it's not natural for me, either!! It's something I have to actively choose to do. I think it's very normal to not want people to see our weaknesses!

I love your videos. I saw a cinematography trick a while back that you might use in your next video to add a haunting quality. During filming, have the music/track playing at a faster speed (like 1.5x) and mouth to it. When you slow it down to match the real pace it will increase the other-worldliness of your character. It will take practice but if you do like small clips here and there like you did with the swimming shots I think it would be bomb-ass. You are such a beautiful singer Ginny and can't wait to see your next video.
Ginny's videos are always such light and happy things. I always feel better after watching one of them. XD

Those boards look great! I love that you included that in your bts because it can save so much time and I know so many people who film but don't use them because 'no one storyboards' (even tho they do?) lol. Storyboards are SO huge for me, every time I skimp on them, it just makes everything more difficult!! I know they can be a bit of a pain to put together, but I find that investing the time up front makes the entire filming and editing process SO much easier.

I remember as a kid who swam a lot, wanting to do that wave swimming form and finding out that not having fish bones makes it a lot harder! I think you did well for having only one set of knees! The effects of movies like Splash! are great, but I've never seen anyone to match it without Hollywood magic. I was definitely impressed enough to see how you did some of those shots :) Extra props to Josh! It may be hard to move yourself just right, but he had to do that AND adapt to your movements :) So I hope he feels great about the work he did, I think that is the most impressive bit here. Hey, I bet he even did his own makeup this time!
There's definitely limitations, but practice can absolutely make mermaids look more convincingly boneless than me in this video, haha! A really good butterfly kick or dolphin kick has more fluidity to it than my own swimming does right now. And if you haven't looked up extended mermaid tails, you should check them out - it's WILD much that little extra length at the ankles sells the fish tail vibe!!

I was wondering if you used any lead, I've noticed that diving lead is an absolute must for me as a mermaid because I am the floatiest mermaid in existence
I don't use any weights! But to be fair, I am a bad floater in general because I have almost no body fat, and once the tail is soaked, it definitely pulls me down a little. I'm not sure how much tail buoyancy affects that kind of thing, since this is the only tail I've had, but if I just stay still and don't move, I definitely sink in this getup!!
For underwater makeup, have a look at Premier Products (PPI), their makeup is alcohol solvable, and designed to medical standards for folks who have medical reasons to wear makeup, so it holds up under a lot of moisture! They have plenty of film and costume re,aged palettes.
Outdoor mermaiding? Ok, that sound fun to see.

Interesting to hear you talk about the form. I have never really watched any other mermaid swimmer footage and I would have never thought of the fact that there's a "proper" form
The goal is to minimize the appearance of the knee, which really gives away that there's a set of human legs in there! A really practiced dolphin kick or butterfly kick has more fluidity to it, less bending right at the knee.
@@GinnyDi speaking or weird mermaid knees, did you ever see pictures of manatees when their knees are visible? It's creepy as hell

I've been looking forward to this video since you unveiled your tail last year. I think you did a great job on your first underwater shoot. If you are considering doing deeper shots I would recommend a Go-Pro and 2 dive lights. I've been a scuba diver since 2000 and have been taking UW photos and video for about 15 years. Yours turned out way better than anything that I've put together so I can hardly wait for your next UW video. Good luck.
Thank you! I highly doubt I'll ever have a long enough breath hold to be able to film deep enough to need deep water equipment, but I definitely think equipment upgrades of some kind are inevitable over time!!
@@GinnyDi You would be surprised how quickly your breath hold increases with practice. One of the guys I dive with started freediving and went from 30 seconds to over 3 minutes in about a year. It's like everything else the more you do it the better you get . Best of luck on your underwater endeavors.

How do you come up with all this? All of your solutions to how to do x thing, are so creative and simple. The tarp behind the pool to get the darkness effect is my favorite from this video.

For anyone looking into mermaiding, Nerdmaid Faith has reviews of practically every tail on the market, and Courtney Mermaid has some very helpful videos (as well as being a tail maker herself!) :))
When I was a kid, I used to shoot film on an 8 mm camera. I filmed underwater in my pool all the time. I just used a ziplock bag. I worked great.
I would really like to swim with a mono fin, but I cannot physically move my body in the way it requires. I had some hip displacement issues as a little kid, which are almost gone now at age 20, but I just can't get my hips to cooperate with a mono fin.
Guess I'll have to be a Phoenix rather than a mermaid.
Or a four-limbed mermaid. Painted diver's fins or mermaid "sleeves" for diver's fins with clearly webbed feet, as well as gloves with webbed fingers could be an alternative.
Something like this, with fins painted to match the leggings:

Loved the music video and it made me think...I couldn't tell any "bad" parts but surely mermaids would have different skills? Some would be better swimmers than others or be able to go deeper.
It's less about being a "good" swimmer and more about swimming in a way that makes the tail appear mermaid-y - concealing the appearance of the knees, which are a very clear indicator that those are human legs in a fabric tail, haha.
