  • I believe the Genie Company might be trying to fool us. They have introduced two wall mount garage door motors. They claim they are different but after comparing them both it seems they are the same. Yet before you go out and buy one of them, you might want to see this video first. Because at the end of the day you don't want to be fooled.

    After having a bad experience with a Menards Masterforce unit which is effectively the same controller as the Chamberlain and Liftmaster products I looked into Genie. My concerns are of a more practical type. Genie does have a more creative and possible more reliable way of detecting a stuck door in close mode than the slack detecting switch and roller arm the others have. The wireless feature is fine except you have to deal with the battery issue so there is no light on the button to find it in the dark. The big problem with all of these is that they rely on the door effectively FALLING down to close itself. If you have a door that is supposed to stay open once manually raised this is a big problem. These units cannot push the door down so if it wants to stay up, up it will stay. You have to loosen the springs and sometimes set the upper limit so that its on its way down with weight on the cable to begin with. This makes it impossible to raise the door manually because the springs arent helping you as much anymore and closing it can be dangerous because there is little to hold it back. I think these things are problematic and potentially dangerous. If you are going to have a wall mount unit the cable system has to be completely redesigned to provide bi-directional force. Maybe roller chain would be a better choice instead of trying to repurpose an inappropriate outdated cable system.

    I don't believe the voltage claim. All the marketing still says 24v. The parts diagram lists the same motor for the entire line of wall mounted openers. The replacement circuit board (part# 41181R.S) is compatible with all models as well. Still pretty strongly suspecting identical product, except the warranty as you pointed out.

    I had the same problem going on their website. That is probably the reason I haven’t bought it yet is because it is confusing as to what is the best model to order. I’ll have to call them to get the details.

    This is not a new marketing gimmick, it's been used for decades by other companies as well. Usually the other companies rebrand (different brand name) the higher priced version. For instance, Chamberlain conventional garage door openers versus Lift Master. Identical mechanically and electrically, the Lift Master comes with a one piece center rail and the Chamberlain comes with a two piece rail so it fits in the box in your local store. It was a scheme also used in automobiles for many decades. Same component parts, same engines and transmissions, built on the same assembly line, but the one with the luxury brand name was priced much higher. The subterfuge was even extended to the replacement parts; the exact same starter for instance cost much less at the Chevy dealership than it did at the Cadillac dealership. So no, this isn't a new scheme or scam.

    Something you should probably add into this video is it if you buy a retail purchase genie opener they will not allow a dealer to warranty or get parts for that opener. You have to take it down box it up in the original packaging and send it back. I’m dealing with one for a customer right now and they will not fix it. You have to take it back to the retail store.

      I've noticed that on Genie garage door openers across their product line or more susceptible to electrical surges or short circuits. If you have a dedicated plug for a wall mount garage door opener with a 20 amp breaker that should provide sufficient protection against damaging the circuit board.

      @@sosgds thanks for reply. Can you clarify why you say on the video that people shouldn't use an extension cord with these motors? Most overhead plugs are in the middle of the garage door ceiling (to accommodate older style openers). It's a dedicated outlet in the sense that nothing else is plugged into it, so I can't see why running a short extension cord (say 6 to 8 feet) to get power closer to the door location would make it any more susceptible to shorts than if the outlet was relocated within 6 feet of the Genie opener. I don't want to have to get an electrician to move the dedicated outlets if I don't need to.

    So due to a freak accident involving wind and the e-release cable, I had my 6172h-b warrantied out, they sent me a 6170h and at first I was frustrated after all that just to get something different. But, despite the fact they are the "same" I can see the 70 is a little faster, I also have a 72 right next to the 70 on another door and there's a visible power difference. I'll have to do an amp draw test cause now I'm curious about the validity of the power ratings

    So I need an opener for a stand alone garage. Doesn’t look like I have enough clearance to put in a standard opener, so I’m looking at a wall mount. Noise isn’t an issue, but it must have a battery backup because this garage does not have any other doors. Which model do you recommend?

    I have a 6170H-B. My garage door had some slowing down issues and at one point we couldn’t open the garage so I had to pull the red emergency cord. Now I’m not too sure how to fix it. Do you have any recommendation? Does that corn have to be set back in the place or something?

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  9 місяців тому

      Hello. I would check the power to your outlet first. If the motor is running, it's possible it's running off the battery backup. If your outlet is good, then check your garage door balance. It could be that your spring needs to be adjusted or replaced.

      This is an excellent question. Unfortunately the only speed adjustment on the 6170 is the drum setting. If you set it for over a 4" drum it slows the opener down a little, but not much. There is no adjustment to increase the speed.

      Hello. As a contractor and installer I prefer the Genie.

  • @jsfbay1
    @jsfbay1 8 місяців тому +1

    It sounds to me that the difference comes down to the warranty. That's how hot water heaters work - they install the same tank, then if you pay the extra $100-$200, they will slap a different sticker on the same tank. How much is the price difference?

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  8 місяців тому +1

      This is also the case for this garage door motor. Originally, the 6172 retail wall mount was to be 18V motor. Yet they are exactly the same motors. The price difference between the two motors will vary from retailer to retailer. Yet on Amazon the 6172 can be found for $200 cheaper.

  • @crs1474
    @crs1474 Рік тому +1

    So the chamberlain has a lifetime warranty on the motor while the Genie has 15 years. Seems indicative of the motor on the Chamberlain having better build quality and materials.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  11 місяців тому

      Hello. That's a solid supposition. Yet neither motor has had the benefit of time to come to that conclusion. I can say that since LiftMaster's introduction of the 3800; their 1st Gen wall mount motor, they have had more time to perfect their design and user experience. But as a dealer contractor I do prefer the Genie motor. It's just a preference.
