Wow he did a Ricky Gervais at the Emmys. He roasted everyone. I'm binge-watching correspondence dinner speeches and Kimmel is definitely the most "edgy".
I think a lot of commenters are really underestimating the level of seemingly life and death political tension and general uncertainty post 9/11. As a liberal you could ostracize yourself by not being openly patriotic. The word "patriot" was used more than "snowflake" is now. Even MSNBC fired 3 different hosts because they didn't support the Iraq war. In context and in content, Colbert exceeded edginess. It wasn't a clever roast like this, or like Gervais at the Emmys (who I love), it was shocking, true satire, and people still ask him about it on a regular basis. With Obama, it was totally different political climate, and thank god for that. If Trump would actually show up to one there might be another shot at being truly subversive.
It is really good in terms of the roasts! However, in my humble opinion, Kimmel rushes a bit with the delivery. Colbert was (to me) in that regard better, Conan also.
Loved all of it, but the last 6 minutes was my favorite! Some great questions asked throughout. Love Jimmy Kimmel. (And telling your history teacher to 'eat it?' Perfection!!!)
