  • This is my look back at the 1986 World Motocross Champion Replica Cagiva WMX 125. In 1985, Cagiva captured its first World Motocross title with Pekka Vehkonen at the controls ending a nine-year run of titles by the Japanese. In 1986, Cagiva introduced a replica of Vehkonen's works bike that looked to finally break into the American Motocross mainstream. The bike was very advanced for the time and a solid contender in need of a little more polish. This is the story of the 1986 Cagiva WMX 125 World Championship Replica.

    Thank you for the excellent video and for correctly pointing out that (despite lackluster M1R front forks) the '86 Cagiva WMX 125 was a weapon in the right hands and was the first to feature what we now consider "modern" MX bike (hard flat seat up the tank) ergonomics. I believe a group of testers today would rate it higher against its Japanese rivals than they did back in the day. A bike that was ahead of its time. Love mine, will never sell it.

    We had a dealer here in Bluff City, TN called Richard's Small Engines.... He started out selling Bultaco in the 1970's but picked up Cagiva in 1983. At that time, you could pick up a sweet WMX 125 for $995 bucks U.S.! Where have all the good times gone?

    Seen one in 1986 at a mx track in Ky. Even seen one converted to a 3-wheeler too. Beautiful machines

    I remember seeing Healey ride the 87 in the cmc series seamed like it didn't have as much power as the Japanese bikes but his skill made up for it

    Ahhh, the 1986. It had a power valve and front disc brake. I had a 1984. Drum brake and No power valve!! Power band like a light switch. If you fell off the power band you had to use the clutch, maybe downshift. Then in 1987 I bought a 500 Cagiva and in 1990 two more!! 🤔🤨😳. Cagiva also owned Ducati. My 500's had heavy steering and Great HP. Also had a Moto Morini 501 Camel. VTwin dual sport! 🤔🤨😳. Might as well mention my Benelli's and 250, 350,450 Ducati.

    Thanks for the article. I watched this on throw back Thursday. I had the 88 model. Half of the parts had cagiva and the other Husqvarna. The bike was white and had a blue seat that said Husqvarna. The power was smooth but the suspension needed some work. I raced it once and seized up the piston. It took 6 months to get a new piston. I sold the bike for $900 after I fixed it. At the time it was all about the Japanese bikes and to sell it, I had to practically give it away. Fun bike and I would have kept racing it if be parts were easier to get.

    Me and my brother had one each. I don’t remember the years. His has a head light mine didn’t.
    A couple of times after I fell the bike motor ran backwards. I didn’t know that was possible. The clutch on both bikes wouldn’t work when you first cranked it. After they were ridden for about 5 minutes they worked fine. We did enjoy riding them they were a blast.

    I had a 1985 Cagiva 125. Drum brake no power valve. Had a power band like a light switch. maybe 10hp to 7000rpm and 30ho at 7300rpm! A twitchy 125. It Always spun the tire when it hit the power band regardless of how little throttle I used. Once it got to X rpm there was a Surge, even in 4th gear. In 1989 I got a Cagiva 500. It didn't need a power valve....... I bought two more 500's in 1992. Sold them in 1999

    I was watching a video on a 450 twin. I then started thinking about the Cagiva that won the world championship 2 years in a row. One of the items they used (that you didn't mention) was the rear disc brake at the counter shaft sprocket. One reason they never won again was because the FIM would not allow them to run that brake setup. Rumors had it that it was kind of a traction control devise used by the rider ,dragging the rear brake. Myself I couldn't see how mounting the brake there would give an advantage, but the FIM felt differently.
    I'm looking for a video on the Franks 125 Yamaha twin. Back then there were 125 twin street bikes and converting them to MX was a great idea. The sound of the Franks 125 was so cool, it never seemed to bog down, just a 125 singing in duet. They were also outlawed in the mid 70's.

    I loved the look of those Cagiva 125’s, I guess it was the old “grass is always greener” kind of thing. I really kind of wanted one, they seemed so exotic. In 1987 I decided to get into trials, take a break from MX AND try something different. I bought a brand new 1987 Merlin DG 3, the most obscure and bizarre trials bike I could have ever chosen! It was powered by a Cagiva 350cc aircooled two stroke with all the torque in the world. It was NOT a delicate lightweight nimble trials machine like the Beta or Fantic of the time, but for a motocross rider getting into trials it was pretty damn fun! I used to get it pointed and just jump everything😂😂👍. Still have that old Merlin today, I never could bring myself to sell it. Now if could just find parts for that thing, especially that Cagiva (Aermacchi) engine!😬

    There were a few here in Sydney Australia due to the Ducati importer bringing them in. I worked for them for years and these were really good bikes

    I wanted the Cagiva bad. I thought it was the Ferrari of Motocross bikes. Like a new Ferrari it was hard to get and very expensive. I think Service Honda was our local dealership and had very few but later they came up with the CR500AF and Cagiva was long forgotten.

    wow! I've never seen an early twin shock model. It looked very 'Husky'. That would be the coolest thing to come across. But, like you said: They didn't have the infrastructure". That's too bad. I always thought that 125 was one of the best looking bikes of the time. I remember seeing ads for them (and anyone can correct me, if I'm wrong), but only one or two U.S. importers were listed (like pretty much a 'broker' on each coast). If I recall, the msrp was a little more than the Jap bikes that came better equipped for our soil. But it's never been uncommon to negotiate a 'savings' on a bike from the big 4; and I suspect one could expect no such treatment when trying to acquire one of these. More than likely, they were marked up, and only brought in per consumer order. I'm sure there were a few curious, enthusiast entrepreneurs who wanted to get their hands on one (or 2, hoping to keep one). But certainly nobody stateside was filling a warehouse or showroom with them, much less trying to compete with other 'dealers'.

    The only time I saw a Cagiva in the flesh that I can remember was a WMX500 in the 1986 Finke Desert Race.

    At 0.43 minute in the picture was the 1987 model with wp ø40 inverted fork..🤓
    1986 model has marzocchi coventional fork ø42🙄

      @@happyraccoon4791 84 model was the last one original harley davidson*cagiva motor🤓85 to 89(89 was last cagiva model before change name in husqvarna) was jan witeween motor that win 85&86 world chiampionship,second in 87&88 world chiampionship👍in 1989 massimo contini policeman without factory support endend 10th in 125 gp with the last cagiva"reparto corse" survived .
      From 1990 to 2007 husqvarna was italian,2007to2013 was owned by BMW,2013 to now is ktm owned🤓

    Back in the day in the mid-80s a company called tricky dick out of Missouri America made a 200cc cagiva 3-wheeler it had over 40 horsepower. Honda 250R three-wheeler only had 39 horsepower from the factory. Cagiva were powerhouses back in the 80s

    The Cagiva/Husqvarnas were an off-road powerhouse in 90’s and early 2000’s harescramble racing here in Ohio. I loved my 01 WR 360. I was more upset about KTM buying them after what they did to Hüsaberg, another race bike I loved.

    I've never ridden a Cagiva.....thought that they looked nice and quite light. What happened to SWM? I always wanted to ride this brand, too, and it got a lot of attention in Europe. Good video as usual. Keep your cute kids and wife safe in these crazy times.
    Now I'm further in and I rode a kid's Harley Davidson that had to have been a Cagiva.....motor good, chassis, horrible on that one.

      @minibikemafia call Wisco, Arias, etc. They might know the piston pin height and diameter and then you can use a Honda or such.

    Hey motocross vault if i could get the info for you a cool episode would be about the langtown backyard supercross and it's influence on modern four stroke motocross bikes. my dad's bike that i raced growing up was actually featured in multiple magazines and had its own test segment in motocross journal. mike healey actually raced the bike in 97 i think at langtown against ryan hughes and lance smail. I still have the magazine with the test and a few others that featured the bike I think. It had tons of cool features at the time including stuff from bbr who were not a big company then. It was a cool race as well because it basically paved the way for modern bikes. I remember racing my bbr modded xr 120 in a cr chassis in the 80!class at Glen Helen and winning. If you were interested lmk. Also I could write some stuff up. Don't judge my writing skills on here I'm using talk to text lol.

      Here in the US at least they had a blended lineup until 1990. The two-stroke MX bikes were Cagivas and the four-strokes were sold as Huskys. Look at an 1988 brochure it has both.

    I disagree about you always saying 80s stuff is not as reliable. I would put money on a 80s honda anything being better built and more reliable than anything built today.

      Back then even Honda said issues. The ones in the early 80s cracked the swingarms blew shock reservoirs off the shocks and the shock shafts were not hard coated so they wore out and could not be easily fixed. There is also the well-known issue with the water pumps that turned into white sludge after a few years. I have owned tons of them and yes they are great machines to be sure but today’s bikes are better built than ever.

      The transmission also blew apart on my CR480R twice and I snapped the kickstarters in two at the knuckle twice. All of these are well documented issues. As I’ve said in general I think Hondas were very well put together for the time but it’s no contest between that and a 2020 CRF for quality of construction

      @@TheMotocrossVault you bought used bikes with who knows how many hours, Abuse etc. Look at modern 4 strokes how many are on Craigslist blown. How many 80s hondas are still around? I'll tell you lots. How many late 2000s 4 strokes do you see around that bed rebuilds or are blown

    rebranding cagiva as husky killed the brand. we cagiva fans hated it, and husky fans hated it too

    I actually worked for the East cost distributor for Cagiva in their hay days for them in the United.States was 1984 - 1987 . It was definitely a shit show.

    These things were priced at 1980$ while the 86 cr125 was 1600 out the door. They sold cagivas at kerney mesa Yamaha back then. The cagiva had the suspension just no power at all. The CR was way way better than any other 125. In fact the 86 cr125 would have won the 87 125 shootout
