I don't think we give cavemen enough credit in modern society - these paintings are extremely skillful. I kind of miss a time when the natural world had more power, space, and presence in our minds.

I think that we have been very presumptive in our thinking of ancient mankind. It is fascinating to see a glimpse of what they saw and just a minute idea of what their world was like. I personally believe mankind hasn't gotten smarter, but more than likely is devolving now. lol. We know that there was technology far beyond what we can do today. The cave just shows an epoch of time, Its all a fascinating mystery!

Picasso after just touring this cave: "We have invented nothing." Meaning modern art has nothing on this spectacular work.

We see so many examples of their ingenuity in the material culture they left behind from their art, their tools, and even megalithic structures and that's only the half of it- think of how much more they made that couldn't be preserved. There's a wealth of information of how they lived and the impacts they made on their world that we'll never see, let alone find.

@@primesspct2 After millions of yrs of brain size growth, human brains have been shrinking since (I believe) around 10k yrs ago. Size alone doesn't necessarily indicate intelligence but could well be that agriculture had something to do with it.
The richness of pre-ag life was likely more demanding of many mental faculties.

Bravo Master Werner Herzog. I dreamt of those caves in my childhood. Beautiful cinema, temple...bear skull and the fertility of the mother Goddess! From a Painter from Bulgaria/America.

Very interesting cast of scientists and others speaking about this unique location on the DVD. I would buy it to complete my Herzog collection but haven't seen it for sale. Unforgettable and insightful moments about this special place in Southern France! Lascaux contains later art....

I am particularly interested because I visited the Lascaux caves (discovered in 1949 by two school boys) in south France 4 years' ago. As Herzog explained, they were closed due to the breath of thousands of visitors causing a mould on the walls, but an exact reproduction of the caves was built along side the original... and can be visited.

all those french/spanish areas caves were untouch for thousands of years of any floods, etc. Aegean civilization was from 12,000 bC, but those were 3x times earlier, although modern humans in Greece were from 200.000 + (check Petralona cave) etc,
