Uh, I doubt it was the storm - trees were made to withstand storms because that's the habitat it resides in. A tree that enormous doesn't just topple over, it was because of that giant hole carved into it. The tree would've been fine if they didn't take a huge chunk out of its foundation just so people could drive through it. Sure, it would have fallen eventually, but that probably would have been many MANY years later.
It didn't fall down because of the hole in the base, because if the hole was a problem it might have even fallen down when they were carving it. And if you look at the tunnel through the base you can see that the walls tilt inward, which was given so that the tree would still have almost as much stability as before the tunnel was made, and if the tilted in walls didn't actually make any difference then it would have fallen down ages ago (mind you it was carved in the 1880s) What actually happened was the tree was so tall, the center of gravity was so high up and the storm was strong enough, that with all these elements combined, toppled over the tree.
@@justinmoon2842 late response but just so u know, this tree was NOT uprooted. It broke apart where they carved it. Also, the tree wasnt getting nearly enough water it once did. This was a long dying tree due to the carve through
Papirov is largely correct. The tree was severely weakened by the cutting, and would have lasted many more years (centuries?) had not human stupidity been foisted upon it.
Wayne Tyson your an idiot, there’s millions of those trees in the California forest and they will be there until an asteroid hits us or a fire starts. environmentalist say we have to let it burn because it’s nature’s way, like they did in Yellowstone in the 80s& 90s when they let fires burn for months before they figured out all of Yellowstone was going to burn down
The damage to the tree was done long ago, there's nothing wrong with testing its age and even using the wood for resources. Leaving it there to rot is dumb. That amount of wood should be sold to the highest bidder.
Keep Peace except that rotting wood provides soil nutrients food and shelter for other endangered species insects and food chain for birds and new trees
They should do something about these tree who had a hole on their base. Something like reinforced it with concreete or wood to prevent them to fell down.
At least Trump is willing to admit that wind turbines are ruining large areas of scenery. I'd like to see him cut their funding, as they really don't reduce fossil fuel use.
Are you sure of your facts are are you simply repeating something you heard? Because the USA has reduced the amount of coal it uses drastically with it declining more rapidly each year. We are now using less coal than we did 30 years ago. Trumps just worried about wind farms ruining the property value of his investments. Yet ANOTHER guaranteed conflict of interest that is sure to arise during his term
Bob Sexton And in a place SET ASIDE to not allow such butchery. Think about it: Man hacked giant holes in extremely rare trees, THEN man sets the whole area aside as a park where man limits man's influence on the same trees. The definition of insanity.
I doubt the tree would have fallen down if not for the giant hole hacked in its base. Might have lived another thousand years if people had not cut the giant hole. Funny, no one else mentioned this.
why in their infinite wisdom didnt they secure the NATIONAL MONUMENT like they do other trees ,with cables,SAD to see all that education and money spent on the people we pay to keep stuff secure going to waste, someone in the forest service FAILED MISERABLY TO DO THEIR JOB

Cutting through the tree weakened it and that is why it fell down
The storm that made the tree fell also came at my house
Yeah a hundred fucking years later
I live 2 min away from that tree!! It's sooooooo sad that it came down!! That was my favorite tree in the park!! 😭😭😭
That water dripping from the tree was the tree crying lolzzzzzzzz
If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it ….
I drove through this tree many years ago, and it definitely was a site to behold. It's sad knowing that this icon is no longer standing.
It's not the storm that knocked it over, some people did. Leaving it there isn't a reminder of nature's power, it's a reminder of man's power...
Makes sense some random ppl can just knock a whole ass tree over 😂
if no one heard it...did it make any sound
Whoever was like "Hey! Let's hollow out this ancient tree, just because it would look and feel cool to walk though.", is a special kind of ignorant.

DUHHHH!! Do YA THINK????? Naw, I bet some jerk might’ve bumped it or something...
Yeah it was carved out in the dicks days, 1900s get over it

I see trees uprooted after storms all the time. And they weren't hollowed out.

...and the beat goes on...
there is still another drive through tree in northern california!

It was previous Democrats who caused it's failure. As with all democrat policies, they come to a crappy end...

By the way what's the use of carving a stupid hole in the middle of a ancient 🌲 did the people even now that
If they never carved hole into it back in 1800s it would have been still there today ...
Lesson learned not to carve giant holes in trees any more ...
Well if they didn't cut the hole in it maybe it wouldn't have fallen or it still would of and you just wouldn't have heard about it.
Don’t weaken the trees.
I did this. It was an accident. I leaned my walking stick against it while I tied my shoe and then all of a sudden Snap!
was it only one big three?
Oh I drove through a Coast Redwood tree you can still do that
I'm sad for the people that didn't get to ride through it. :(
Really? I'm sad for the fools who cut a hole in God's creation we're supposed to protect.
Keep Peace I mean they did it 200 years ago. You can't really get revenge on dead people.
laying around there must be a hinder
thats enough firewood for me for these winter...
so ship him over...
thanks
Wet, rotten wood doesn't burn well.
WakeUpB4uDie
ok thnx, thought it will do for this winter anyway...
Redwood don't burn that well either. 😁
I wanted to see it...
The “foothills”..... yeah, this is not the foothills
If a tree falls in the forest do you hear it?!!! I wonder if anyone heard it fall? lol Poor tree
Lol? You know that tree had decades of respected honor right? And it also lived for about 900 years!
No s***! We cut a f****** hole in it!
0:40 Did he say bitch or bench
Sounded like the bitch got it to me
Bitch
Plant another and wait. easy
Yeah just wait another 1048 years!
That's what ya get for hollowing it out man. HAHA
The big freaking hole in the base, carved by idiotic profit seekers may have played a part, DON'T YOU THINK?
Indio Side nah man if it was able to stand since they carved through it since the 1880s I don’t think so
KILLED

They should sell the woods and use that money to improve the park or plant more sequoias that would be smarter
Now I won't be able to see the action of going through this tree :(
Ah well...there are still plenty of Sequoia left!
They should do something about these tree who had a hole on their base. Something like reinforced it with concreete or wood to prevent them to fell down.
Should make benches out of it. Plenty of good wood still left on it.
The old tree knew Trump is the next president & didn't want to witness mass destruction of Mother Nature 🤔😱

Profit 'at all cost' seekers carved that hole. The tree could stand to see the return of the wanton pillage,
You logic is flawed.
The CIA cut it down
thanks Obama, he won't stop until his final day
Rudy Texas what?
Very sad

just another phase of its life? am I wrong in think that the large hole in its trunk decreased its structural integrity?
Sad!
I doubt the tree would have fallen down if not for the giant hole hacked in its base.
Might have lived another thousand years if people had not cut the giant hole.

Perhaps because it is too obvious to mention. But then many others HAVE noted on this page.
No shit and plus these trees are nearing the end of their natural life
