    I can agree with everyone here when they say the quality of the video is amazing :)
    I know I'm late to the party as this video was published 1 year ago but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
    I do want to point out anki, while indeed extremely helpful to language learning, does not teach a language by itself. I actually always recommend anyone that starts using anki to never use premade decks and instead get the words from immersion (even if you know absolutely 0 words).
    At the end of the day, anki is a supplement to language learning and not a requirement, but not using a premade deck allows you to remember the context in which you found the word which is extremely important when learning a language...
    also, be sure when you're more advanced to drop anki altogether and just learn organically (through organic repetition).

    • @theflower9264
      @theflower9264 5 місяців тому

      hey! excuse me but what is organic repetition?

    • @shinigami-only-eat-appl
      @shinigami-only-eat-appl 5 місяців тому +1

      @@theflower9264 just repetition through finding the vocab terms in the wild (no anki or SRS of any kind) trusting that you will just learn it by seeing it naturally without having something like SRS force repetition.

    Damn, man I have to be honest. I watched one of your videos some time ago and really didn't pay much attention to what you said in it, I just kinda brushed it off thinking "oh another one of those videos". I started learning Japanese almost a year ago and it wasn't really a productive year but recently I got back into reading manga, watching some anime and listening to a ton of music made by Japanese artists after saying that I'm done with the language because of very small progress made. But after stumbling across one of your videos again and checking your channel out I think you gave me a push into a direction I wanted to go for some time now. Just completely dive in and immerse in Japanese, from youtube to games and etc. It is also how I learned English since it's not my native language. I just started watching playthroughs of games I liked and then playing them in English and even though I understood very, very little I was having a ton of fun and I think it's time to do the same with Japanese. Of course I have a bit of head start comparing to total beginners because some stuff I retained in my memory and unconsciously picked up while listening to music and watching anime lol. So once again, thank you very much man, I hope more people will find your channel because the tips you give and editing deserves more than there currently is. God bless you man!

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  Рік тому +1

      Yep, it's a preference thing. I personally don't care; if I fail the card then I fail it. If you hide the times though, it's a good idea to make it so the card auto graduates if the interval exceeds 1 year!
      Or change your mindset on it, failing the card doesn't actually mean failiure, it means you get a good chance of remembering the word better. It's a win all around!

    Putting the color of the pitch on the front of the card is throwing me off. Isn't that just telling you the answer before you flip it? I assume it's to regularly associate the correct pitch to the word you're learning instead of drilling yourself on it? If you could explain your thoughts on that I would find it helpful. Great videos thank you.

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  7 місяців тому +3

      Pitch isn't something to be memorized, it's something to be heard. If you can hear it, you can hear it- if you can't, you can't. So putting the color on the front won't make a difference if you can't hear it, and being able to hear it is not dependent on having it on the front.
      .
      Remember that Anki is not designed to help out acquire the language and thus output it, it is only there to assist in making input comprehensible. Having the colors on the front allows you to more easily associate what you're hearing to the expected pitch, this way when you hear that same word again used in immersion, you'll acquire it with more association to the correct pitch, thus leading to correct output.

    • @midioutput
      @midioutput 7 місяців тому +4

      @@JouzuJuls I implemented the colors into my deck before your reply and it felt helpful instantly. I dont spend time 'hearing' the wrong pitch in my head before I guessed the reading/definition, so it's removing all the incorrect information from the process. It also helped me hear the pitch much easier once I reveal the back of the card. Thanks for the reply.

      @JouzuJuls  6 місяців тому +2

      When I started, I was actually doing 3 reviews per card. Now I've reduced it to only 2 (listen/read).
      It wouldn't make your session longer if you prioritized session length over words learned. Simply reduce the amount of words learned per day to reduce review time.
      Of course, if you feel that you have no problem with your listening/reading skills at all, you can just delete one of the options.

      @@JouzuJuls thanks for a quick response. Your videos are awesome and I hope you’re feeling better! I’m doing the Core 2.3k deck and am only 121 words studied into it, so that’s good advice that I should prioritize study length over word count. That should help avoid burnout and make it manageable each day.

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  6 місяців тому +1

      @@WarriorX16 Thank you, feeling better by the day :)
      And yes, prioritizing longevity and making sure you don't burn out is of the utmost importance.
      The only reason I was able to progress so quickly was because I was willing (and able) to spend more than 4 hours a day on Anki and get like 4+ hours of immersion on top of that every single day.
      Not everybody is willing to, or has the luxury to do that. So it's important to work at your own pace!

  • @E-M-T
    @E-M-T Рік тому +2

    I did some research into how the four Again | Hard | Good | Easy buttons at the bottom work and it seems that there's a percentage that changes how much time until you see that card again is, but it only gets changed with the Again and Hard buttons making it go up and Easy making it go down.
    So wouldn't this mean that if I only use Again and Good would have some adverse affects on efficiency because all you're ever doing in increasing cards intervals until you have "Learned" the card? It seems negligible but idk, worth mentioning I guess, and I just cant figure out how to handle this topic

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  Рік тому +1

      It's just a lot simpler to go 2 buttons cuz you don't need to faff around with knowing when you should press hard or not. Since pressing it too much would put you into "ease hell".
      .
      Just go with "Good" for "i know it" and "again" for "idk". If you think you kinda know it but not really then you don't really know it. If you 100% know it but just get a little brain fart, then you know it- just "good" it.
      .
      If you really want to get into the specific details about how the Hard button screws with you, this video explains anki's algorithm: ua-cam.com/video/lz60qTP2Gx0/v-deo.htmlsi=PGxF123e85pvlixB

    I have a question. The Anki deck in your Google Docs (the one with red highlight) seems to be a core6k. Can I just study the first 2k words and still say that I have finished the Core2k? I don't really want to study Core6k yet.

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  3 місяці тому +1

      You don't have to finish the Core 2K at all. The purpose of the Core deck is to get you started with at least something- so it honestly doesn't matter which core deck you use.
      As for why you don't have to finish them, the first ... say 500 or so words are so common, they probably make up 50-60% of anything/everything.
      The next 500 words after that probably add an additional 10-15%. Then the next 500 words add like maybe 5-8%.
      So once you can begin to understand stuff in the wild, it's time to start shifting away from core and start switching into mining.
      A mining video will be coming soon, please stick to the community if you'd like to request it sooner or get direct advice from the other peeps on the server: discord.gg/gW3gT499fF

      Hello! The fact that you've been on Duolingo for 3 months and still haven't learned the alphabet proves that Duolingo does not work.
      .
      It is possible to learn both Hiragana and Katakana in a single day using this method: ua-cam.com/video/c7N58Xrl7Jk/v-deo.html
      .
      I would recommend stopping Duolingo immediately and starting to do Anki instead.
      .
      Also, if you research how language learning works, you'll discover that Duolingo is actually very ineffective!
      .
      I recommend looking into the research by the linguist Dr. Stephen Krashen and "The Input Hypothesis": ua-cam.com/video/NiTsduRreug/v-deo.html

      @JouzuJuls  Рік тому +1

      Look on the very bottom of the document listing out some of my curated decks (The document you downloaded the decl from).
      .
      There's an "RTK" deck there, which is (imo) the best deck for learning Kanji.
      .
      That being said, I don't recommend doing Kanji decks despite it being extremely effective. This is because it's extremely time consuming (took me 1.5 years), boring, and overall just feels like a chore.

      Unless you have a very good reason to do it, imo it's not something you need to do.

    Hey Cheif, I'm looking for an anki deck for n5 kanji. Do you have any recommendations?

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  Рік тому +6

      I do not recommend people follow JLPT rankings because:
      1. JLPT has not released their word list so all word lists are speculative or based on the 2010 word list which could be outdated.
      2. What JLPT lists as N5 or N whatever, has no actual link to how often you will see the word in real life use.
      It is far better to learn words based on the frequency of occurrence in real life and completely disregard what JLPT level it is.
      It's only when you get to N2 and N1 will the JLPT test actually matters, and when you get there you'll be specifically picking out harder words from immersion anyway.
      So to conclude, you should stick to using the Core decks as they are a compilation of the 2000 most commonly used words in real life.

    • @JouzuJuls
      @JouzuJuls  Рік тому +1

      If you know you're going on a holiday, preemptively lower the amount of cards you are doing several weeks beforehand.
      .
      There are some addons that allow you to stop it for a few days but I'm not sure how effective they are since Anki is designed to be used daily. If you stop it, it just wont do what its designed to do.
      .
      When I go on holidays I do my reviews anyway and I try to do them as fast as possible.
      .
      If you reduce the number of cards you're seeing just by not doing any new cards, it shouldn't be that hard.
