I have been doing this for ages! I'm glad you are getting this stuff more common within the community, I am currently working on Yellowstone National park styled in this way.
@@ZSHplays It really is! Sometimes It's a lot more relaxing to not have to worry about facilities and guest needs. But sometimes It's more interesting to construct a working zoo.
I remember that in my favorite zoo games from where I was a child (honestly don't remember the name) you didn't need to change the settings to do this. Animals could eat from natural resources, and i spend hours building the perfect ecosystems with enough plants so they regrow quick enough to feed all the animals and a nice mix of animals and everyone being happy and free without any humans. It was so fun, and I was really disappointed when I saw it was impossible in planet zoo
I think that was Zoo Tycoon 2? I've never played it so not sure. Yes it would be a great feature to have in PZ but, seeing as real zoos don't work like that I guess it seemed like a waste of resources? Maybe they could do a Planet Ecosystem?
@@ZSHplays I actually used these mechanics also when building normal zoos. With the right planning you could do enclosures that had enough plants to sustain the animals, plus of course water, so the humans were only needed for cleaning. That then got a big part of my zoo planning as for that the enclosures had to be bigger than normal ones, forcing me to think in detail about how I lay them out in a way the visitors still would see the animals
I love to do that, since It didn't came on console yet i do It with JWE2, i enjoy just seeing animaos roaming around like in the wild, see them reproduce and have babies while the foodchain goes on, IS really satisfieing and idk why 😅🤩
This video finally sold me on Planet Zoo! I think Planet Zoo is a great game, and i love the selection of vanilla and modded animals. And this may be blasphemous to veteran PZ players. But i'm not creative enough or honestly even that interested in building a proper zoo and dealing with guest needs. All i really want to do is make a realistic environment and watch all the animals go about their day like it's Planet Earth. And now i know that it's possible to create a sustainable ecosystem. One more question though. Do predators only hunt when they're hungry?
I’ve never tried creating an ecosystem to be honest. If you got the predator to prey ratio correct it might be possible. But you would need keepers. In order to get the animals to hunt and actually kill and eat their prey you need to have ‘animal deaths’ turned on, however, this will enable the prey to die of starvation and there is no way for them to eat without being fed by keepers. An environment like this video with no keepers does not work long term unless you turn ‘animal deaths’ off.
I am very impressed with how this is done even though I don't have the game but I know you want this to look the most natural possible, you could use the facilities as lodges and the keepers and such as park rangers.
for anyone who want to creat a single big habitat with carnivores with others animals, i recommend to use, disable death, welfare. illness, escapes, and enable fear and animal predation, fight, with that, you will see carnivores chasing the others but not killing, that way the game looks like more natural with chases and escapes etc. obs : the herbivore will be knocked out(not die) by the carnivore, but just transfer it from one location to another and it will be back on its feet
The fact that Zoo Tycoon 2, a decades old game, had some animal mechanics (eating straight from vegetation, herding) that the new one lacks... man, I wish they'd pay as much attention to the animals. It feels like Planet Zoo has focused a lot more on the people/building part.
Animals don't eat the vegetation in their habitats IRL though. If you have a 100m2 habitat with antelopes in it they'll eat the entire habitat in a day, that's why zoos have feeders. The animal behaviours could definitely be improved though!
@@ZSHplays Yeah, but I'm talking about the "wild" zoo you tried to make. You have to turn on cheats so animals don't keep dying, which sucks. Would have been nice for them to eat vegetation. ZT2 fixed this by making their want to graze/eat bushes below their want to eat from food throughs and whatnot. Which makes sense; delicious veggies > dry grass.
I've been doing this for a while, I love how easy you make it look. I was wondering if you had any tips on how to make it more naturalistic with the terrain. Creating valleys/cliff sides etc
Hmm, makes me wonder if this game would let you do what Zoo Tycoon 2 did - just placing all animals from one biome into your zoo without any fences or enrichment and letting them breed, feed on each other and just run around freely.
Omg that just reminds me of what i used to do when i was younger, always creating ecosystem's in zoo tycoon 2 and Jurassic parc and having some great sunday's by myself 😂
Is there a way you could do something like this but let the animals breed and hunt naturally? It would be interesting to see groups of animals in a realistic environment where they try to survive as they do in the wild.

My tip: add all your stuff one speices at a time (dont forget to put the no predetation thingie until all your speices otherwise, massacare) otherwise they might bug...(i learnt that the hard way) and then if you want to you can add food and toys that look natural

Is it possible to just make one huge barrier all around the map and work from there? And just create a little section at the start of the zoo (entrance) for staff to be able to move around staff facilities
Not really, performance will be terrible with a habitat that big and the keepers wouldn't make it from one side to the other before giving up and going for a rest.
