This was a groundbreaking record. The Wrecking Crew, the band of crack session musicians who played with everyone from Sinatra to Dylan, played the instruments on this album, and they told Brian Wilson his musical genius blew their minds.
This was recorded over a two-month period using top Los Angeles session musicians - the Beach Boys didn't play any instruments on the track. About 90 hours of studio time and 70 hours of tape were used, and at least 12 musicians played on the sessions. It's hard to know whose performances ended up on the record, but some of the musicians involved were Glen Campbell (lead guitar), Hal Blaine (drums), Larry Knechtel (organ) and Al de Lory (piano). You may be surprised to hear that there is another group that fits that box. Jan And Dean were a singing duo/group that were around the same time as the Beach Boys and shared a lot of their sound, especially the vocal harmonies. "Sidewalk Surfin'" is about the brand new (at that time) sport of skateboarding. "Dead Man's Curve" is about a twisty piece of road in Los Angeles that claimed a number of lives. "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" - much of their music was specifically about L.A. (Pasadena is one of the satellite cities of L.A.) These guys were one of the most innovative groups in history. They created music that inspired so many great artists that followed. Their chord structures were unreal. They were a generational talent.
It's easy to overlook what a game-changer this song was in 1966. "Good Vibrations" was absolutely trailblazing. It was recorded at two separate studios, and you can hear the tape splices when they switched between the separate recordings. It was extremely elaborate and expensive to produce. In addition to the orchestral instruments, there's even a theremin. This was a masterpiece of composition, sound engineering, and music production by Brian Wilson. It was a different time when popular music had to be G-rated, but Brian Wilson used some psychedelics like LSD, and that colored the way he saw and heard music. Their lyrics were very innocent and innocuous, but the musical composition here was like nothing before or since. In the few years that followed, popular music changed in a major way with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin writing edgier songs, but that change started right here with this psychedelic masterpiece.
The Beach Boys were an iconic group from the 60s and 70s. They had so many great hits like "In My Room", "I Get Around", "She's not the Little Girl I Once Knew", "Help Me Rhonda", "California Girls", "God Only Knows", "Don't Worry Baby", and many more hits.
And making it was on again, off again, took 6 months. Brian couldn't get it together. Mike Love stepped in and gave him the hook line "I'm picking up good vibrations" part. and then Brian finally got it done after going to three studios and so many experiments. Music and drugs, lol.

The Beach Boys have been together since 1961, they only had three number one hits, this was the second out of three that hit No. 1 in 1966 - the first being 'Help Me Rhonda' from the year before. However, the group would have to wait another 22 years before their last number one hit with 'Kokomo' in 1988.
At the time this was the most expensive single ever recorded at well over a half million $$$. Brian was no longer touring with the band & while they were on the road he recorded this song over a series of months, in pieces, using a bunch of studio musicians called The Wrecking Crew. There were pieces of this song all over the place & once it was assembled into a complete song, the rest of The Beach Boys went into the studio & added their vocals.
Beach Boys were highly influential and innovatively changed the way music was structured and recorded. Geniuses! For a ballad, try *God Only Knows.* My sister is named after a Beach Boys song too. 😉
I grew up in the middle of the Canadian prairies and in the mid-1960s when I was in grade five or six my friend and I snuck into his sister's bedroom, while she was gone somewhere, and he played her Beach Boys 45rpm for me. I was hooked. I think one of the songs was "Sloop John B." If you haven't heard that one it is great! Music that _still_ makes you feel good!
At the time, it was new and innovative in it's own right. Brian Wilson was the innovator of vocal harmany in the rock genre. He took the harmony of the Four Freshman and the rockin' sound of Chuck Berry to develope their sound. This song was recorded in 1966 at four different studios (Western, Columbia, Gold Star, and Sunset Sound in California). The vocal layers were initially performed by Brian with added layers of harmonies by Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Mike Love.
Masterpiece! The space whistle like sound you might be wondering about comes from a theremin, an electronic musical instrument invented in 1920. It's played by waving your hand around an antenna like structure. Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin famously plays one on stage in the movie The Song Remains The Same, but save that reaction for another day. The Beach Boys released some ballads. "Surfer Girl" (1963) stands out. Brian Wilson wrote "Don't Worry Baby" (1964) in response to The Ronettes "Be My Baby". It features a really nice melody backed up with a lush wall of sound. "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965) is a fun song in that same style. So too with "Wouldn't It Be Nice" (1966) and "God Only Knows" (1966). And for something different from them, check out the instrumental "Let's Go Away For Awhile" (1966) from their Pet Sounds album.
Brian Wilson was the main songwriter but his father was very hard and critical towards him which caused him mentally but Pet Sounds record was incredible ✌️
Back then, most of the famous bands had their own sound and had their own way of recording those song...........that's one reason the sixties are so inspiring and fresch.

God Only Knows is a Beach Boys' ballad. It's also one of the most beautiful songs ever written . . . the one song Paul McCartney said he wishes he wrote. In My Room is another great ballad.
The Beach Boys were the summer soundtrack of my summers growing up. If you want ballads, go to their album "Animal Sounds". "In My Room", "Caroline No" and "God Only Knows" are on this album...which by the way, inspired The Beatles album "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Heartclub Band". Two of the most iconic albums ever.
One of the greatest single record of all-time. Period. Listen to The Beach Boys' "Add Some Music to Your Day" for one of the most beautiful songs ever written, performed, and produced. There's Brian Wilson... and everybody else whose made music in the rock/pop era. He stands alone. Or sits alone in his sandbox...
The Beach Boys were experimenting with Pop sounds and Classical styles. The created something unique. Their sound will be recognized until the end of time. Brian Wilson put his heart and soul into their music. It literally "drained" him. Thanks for your great reactions.
You HAVE to watch the movie about the Beach Boys called "Love and Mercy" (titled after one of their songs names), starring John Cusack (as Brian Wilson). EXCELLENT movie about them. It shows how his hallucinations from his mental illness gave him so many ideas for the sounds in their songs, especially this song "Good Vibrations". (plus so much more about them). I watched it once and then bought the dvd I loved it so much. ❤️❤️❤️
Their early stuff had been surfer/car/girl songs (some nice ballads - Surfer Girl, In My Room), but this mid-60's era was another level for Brian Wilson and group. Nobody had heard anything like it at the time. Lots of people would argue that Brian Wilson is a genius. That word gets tossed around a lot these days, but if not, he was definitely incredibly creative...
For ballads listen to their "Surfer Girl", "In My Room" and "God Only Knows". I have a hard time believing that anyone could dislike any of those. Studio versions. Live was not good back then.
Ever seen that holiday movie "Love, Actually"? The song during the opening & closing is the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." I just found your channel and am loving your reactions. Thanks!

"Surfer Girl" is a great ballad by the Beach Boys. The eerie sounding instrument is a theremin, something you don't often hear.
" Surfer Girl " is their best known ballad. great song.
The Beach Boys are Thee Sound of Summer Time..
I hope that she is giving you good vibrations. As for a ballad God only knows. Maybe the most beautiful song ever written.
Beach Boys were highly influential and innovatively changed the way music was structured and recorded. Geniuses! For a ballad, try *God Only Knows.* My sister is named after a Beach Boys song too. 😉
Let me guess. Is her name Caroline?
Marcella?
Barbara Ann
Yes and Glenn Campbell was one of the Wrecking Crew before he went off on his own as a solo artist. Glenn is an unsung guitar player.
Thus song and Brian Wilson composition of the album Pet Sounds got the highest props.
53 years ago. 😉♥️. They definitely had their own sound . That’s what made them great . It’s California music🤘
An early Beach Boy ballad is 'Surfer Moon'. A favorite of course is 'The Warmth of the Sun'. But 'God Only Knows' is terrific.
They were groundbreaking genius. Pet Sounds ranks as one of the greatest albums ever
Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" probably the greatest musical masterpiece ever recorded in the history of the world.
Yes-- for ballads check out "In My Room" and "God Only Knows"
check out the vocals-only "Our Prayer" from the Brian's Smile CD
great reaction....Beach Boys had fun songs..my fav from them are GOD ONLY KNOWS and WOULDN'T IT BE NICE...so good!!!!!!!!!
GOD ONLY KNOWS is a beautiful ball...so emotional, makes teary-eyed...this song influenced Paul McCartney to write HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE, a very beautiful Beatles song from their mid period...pls. more Queen: IT'S A KIND OF MAGIC
This is Carl Wilson on lead vocals here, and he absolutely nails it...Try their tune, I Can Hear Music...
One of the most innovative bands of all time and yes they have beautiful ballads…I recommend Warmth Of The Sun or Please Let Me Wonder
They modeled their vocal approach on the four freshman jazz harmony quartet. Check out It's a Blue World Without You...
Beach boys are so fun in concert. Surfer girl is a cool little ballad from them
That cello! geez, that guy's a beast laying down that beat!
Awesome love all y'all play 👍 " Chubby checker Let's twist again " is another one gives you that beautiful feeling 😁
If you heard “god only knows” you’d most likely recognize it from tons of movie soundtracks. “In my room” is another popular ballad
Brian Wilson was the song writer that drove all other bands of the 60’s and 70’s too up their game!
The Beach Boys' GOD ONLY KNOWS is one of the best ballads ever.
"In My Room" would be a great ballad by The Beach Boys. Also... "The Warmth of the Sun,"
This is probably their greatest song in my opinion. Just a masterpiece.
Love the Beach Boys. Sloop John B and Dance, Dance, Dance are 2 more great songs by them
God Only Knows is my absolute favorite ballad. In My Room is also amazing
This group did the best summer beach or just party music ever.
For ballads listen to their "Surfer Girl", "In My Room" and "God Only Knows". I have a hard time believing that anyone could dislike any of those. Studio versions. Live was not good back then.
Love the beach boys, amazing catalog of music.
Ever seen that holiday movie "Love, Actually"? The song during the opening & closing is the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows." I just found your channel and am loving your reactions. Thanks!
"In My Room" is another great ballad.
Jason Michael Carroll Alyssa Lies, Hurry Home, Where I'm From, and Livin our love song This is some first-class country music
