    Was able to see this documentary at a screening last night -- amazing. Respect for the directors for telling the whole story by just using footage and letting the viewer experience it without interruption. I can see why this won so many awards.

      Another fantastic documentary that is in the same style (raw footage, no narration) is "102 Minutes that Changed America", about the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York. Very hard-hitting and not for the faint-hearted.

    I saw the whole 2 hour documentary on Nat Geo. What happened to King was brutal and people had a right to be angry, but the level of destruction, larceny, killing of innocent lives (most killed, ended up being blacks), torture of innocent people who just happened to pass by the wrong place at the wrong time, resulted in pain and heartache for thousands of innocent people. This riot was the main reason OJ was acquitted of murder about 3 years later, even though the evidence was there. The LA police didn't want to go thru another riot of this extent, so a murderer walked free. OJ timed this one perfectly.

    • @kevinbacon8257
      @kevinbacon8257 6 років тому +34

      Think the fact that this all could have been avoided was the real message in the first place. The documentary didn't shine away or ignore all the damage and suffering caused by the riots, but it didn't ignore what led to them in the first place. What happened to Rodney King was what broke the camels back. Like one guy in the video said, "It's not the killing that people are angry about, it's the Justice system letting them get away with it." When the Jury let those officers go, it sent a message to all those people in the community that their lives don't matter. I don't approve of a lot of the damage done either, but I can't blame them either.

    • @PowerfulBorn
      @PowerfulBorn 6 років тому +7

      Ann D, sorry to tell you this, but that is not why OJ was acquitted. There was no evidence linking him to the crime. The trial was lost by the prosecution when they had him put the glove on from the scene. IT DID NOT FIT. The trial was over at that point. I'm not saying he is, or was innocent. I don't believe he did it, but i do believe he knows something about it. Peace.

    • @iakusz
      @iakusz 6 років тому +10

      My god, don't be so dense. What happened to King was just the tip of the iceberg, the one spark that ignited GENERATIONS OF RESENTIMETNS. What you're saying is like: I know that murdering Franz Ferdinand might have wound up the Austrians a bit, but was no reason for starting a world war. You are massively missing the point and should have your voting rights revoked.

    I was born on April 29, 1992 and while my mom was resting at the hospital and my dad was out working near the hub of where a lot of the rioting was happening, he managed to take home a new stereo a man was hiding behind a bush. Along with other electronics he was looting from a nearby store. My dad said that as he was loading his truck with the new stereo, he could see the man frantically running down the street, trying to catch up to my dad. My mom said my dad was just smiling when he walked into her hospital room.

    I was 4 years old when these riots happened and I'm also born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I do have vivid memories of his name at that time from my mom, grandmother and elders talking about it but when I got a wee bit older and looked into it myself, wow. This documentary is as raw as a it gets and for anyone who wasn't alive or too young too remember, brace yourself. I watch this documentary at least once a year. In my personal opinion, this is the closest the United States ever came to a Second American Civil War. I don't blame LA for being angry, I was angry after learning all what came before the riots. What choice did they have? Enough was enough and voices needed to be heard. I couldn't imagine living it back then and the closest I ever came to something like this was working security during the G20 in Toronto. A moment I'll never forget but, it will never measure to this. America is still dealing with race issues and as long as that is still the case, America is doomed to repeat its history which we have seen over and over after 1992. Treat people with equality, respect, courteousness and kindness. Do better. The world is watching.

    This documentary was insane. Rodney King, it was a tragic. But did you see how black people were just hitting anyone at that intersection? My blood was boiling because that’s horrible. They weren’t doing it for King, no matter what they said. They wanted the violence and used that as an excuse. People that had nothing to do with it were involved and hurt. That’s not something to be proud of. Violence does not solve violence. People were hurt. They were not there for each other, for there community. They destroyed their community. Stup*d! Just stup*d! You solved nothing. You just proved that you don’t deserve to be treated with respect when you don’t respect your own people, your own community.

    Rioting is not peace and is not a path to peace. It's throwing all things out of the window just to vent your anger (metaphorically and literally). If you want to destroy something, at least destroy what belongs to you and don't ruin things for other people.

    This trailer is not cut like the movie and makes this film seem like a more politically correct doc. This film is anything but.
    Using only the narration of authentic footage, the movie masterfully reveals the amount of violence and mayhem that was unleashed after the RK verdict.
    Its editing is ethereal and trance-like. It showed the progression of the news and street commentariat and the unforgiving, immoral, and opportunistic nature of this grip of anger and racial grievance. People didn't care who they destroyed in that state of lawless hysteria. It confronts how when something like this goes down, you only will have yourself for defense. The scene with the Koreans taking arms to defend their livelihoods is jaw-dropping.
    I watched this in my room in LA during the aftermath of the George Floyd riots, a time where you could drive around and could see every business boarded up, city blocks burnt to a crisp, people with guns on street corners, police vehicles zooming by with 20 officers each hanging off the outside.
    Makes me think that they should show this in schools to prevent the repeating of history, but maybe, showing this in schools might cause some very undesirable consequences. When you understand that neighbors around you would take the opportunity to kill you if the right racial stars align is a hard truth and one that needs to be learned at a certain stage of maturity. Tucking this footage away might just be better for getting along. There's that clip of Morgan Freeman saying that the solution to racism is to stop talking about it, the more we focus on its evil, the more we allow its evil control us. All I'm saying; watch this if you dare!

    Watching this made me realize that indeed people don’t realize that the only thing these riots achieve is loss to themselves. They literally were ruining themselves in the name of black power and not even realizing it. They lost everything trying to “fight” for justice.

    Just watched this on netflix. I remember this all very clear. It was terrible what happened to the little girl that was shot and to Rodney king but I feel the same way now as I did then. How does burning , beating, and destroying your own neighborhoods help right a wrong? Actually when, the riots occurred it took some of my sympthany away. And to beat innocent people who had nothing to do with any of it was just as criminal as what happened to Rodney King.
