    It is CRYSTAL CLEAR from this video just how much it bugs you to not be able to save every machine that lands on your workbench! Don't worry man- they don't ALL have to get fixed. Besides, I think you are right on the money with the idea to strip that motherboard for parts. sometimes the amount of time spent to fix stuff isn't worth it and those nifty new projects (like re-amiga) need parts too. 👍🙂

    I had to give up on my rev 6.1 Amiga 3000 T PCB. I finally found a clean (cleanish) motherboard that had been robbed of its chips and fixed and swapped in the working chips. Damn you batteries!

  • @-IFFTI-
    @-IFFTI- 2 місяці тому +1

    The only thing that comes to my mind is to resolder all the soldering points on the board. Damn electrolyte can do damage in very strange places.
    I know it's a strange idea, but after the wars with batteries, not only in Amigas, but especially in music synthesizers... such a job allowed me to bring a corpse to life more than once.
    Do not give up... 🤞

    Watching this was like a horror movie for me as I have one A3000 and it works just perfect. Scares the hell out of me that it would start to fail. It has CS060@50Mhz, CV64/3D, Xsurf etc. I have bought a faster 060 but I don't dare to change it to the CPU card just in case something goes wrong. Its fast enough as it is.
    Ofc there are days when it won't boot. I open it, press some chips down carefully and touch the power wires and it boots again and stays on nicely. It has the original PSU, which I think probably causes the occasional boot problems.
    So happy with this comp.

    It's going to suck but you'll have to go through "every" component on the board, not just the main chips, and check the signal on them, following the startup path to see where the signal dies. This will be even more time consuming. :(

    Sounds like the perfect candidate for a ReAmiga. Put another 30 years in the old girl with a heart transplant on a brand new board/capacitor/resistors/etc..... So long as the Amber chip and SuperDMAC chip are still good, everything else is avaliable. I thought you only invested 20 hours into these projects. Sounds like you went way overboard on this board. You cannot save them all.

    I'm a firm believer that in this unfortunate niche ultra expensive Amiga hobby environment, that technicians such as yourself should be charging a lot more for this type of service. A few years back I had some high level repairs done on my A4000, for this repair the technician only charged me about $70 or something ridiculously low. I see the same technician is now reluctant to take on new repairs as he seems to be mostly working on the re-Amiga builds. I can only assume this is because it is a lot more *lucrative* and less time consuming to build something from scratch, custom chips can be tested individually which doesn't involve potentially open-ended detective work.... These Amiga technicians were a rare species anyway and so it's sad we are loosing them and with it the ability to have these old machines professionally repaired. I don't know how much you charge, but in this current environment you should perhaps start with $500 just to look at the big box Amiga stuff. The reality is that the custom chips for these have become gold dust, and because of this so are the technicians to work on them.

    • @ChrisEdwardsRestoration
      @ChrisEdwardsRestoration  3 місяці тому

      I dont charge anything. I do this as a hobby and help to other Amiga enthusiasts. why? well I believe in the Amiga and I dont want it to die. I do get help from Patreon members who mostly kick in 1$ a month... yes a month, but it does help offset the cost of chips and repair parts and things to make it possible. Sometimes I even get help with return shipping...But I do it out of love for the platform.

    • @uberdude2555
      @uberdude2555 3 місяці тому

      @@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Yikes thats cool I didn't know that. It's then maybe worth being cautious and picky which projects you take on, personally I'd rather help someone who has owned a working machine for sometime which went bad on them, rather than someone who picked up a broken machine that has potentially been worked on and written off several times, with perhaps the expectation of making it valuable, opps sorry I mean working again. It's none of my business anyway, I just really enjoy watching you're content, and if you ever do charge for this type of stuff in future I don't think anyone will begrudge you. I'm looking forward to the next Amiga adventure.

    I wonder is trying something like the pistorm that takes over lots of functions on the board might boot. If it does, would that be able to narrow down the things that do and don't based on what the pi takes over?
    I don't remember if the pi can boot from roms on a disk or if it needs roms on board.
    If it boots that way, you can test to see what it can see of the board, and you know the functions that are handled by the pi.
