Because theres no R&B, Blues, Rock, Jazz & every modern form of music without America. British have always emulated Americans. You only hear RAYEs accent when she raps, singing wise its always gonna come out “sounding American” because American singers are her blueprint & influence.
Like the One Direction boys i didnt know they were from the UK until i heard interviews from them talking because to me it just sounded like they sing in an american kinda accent
Lets not forget that authenticity doesnt always sound good. If were good with that fact then we are honestly not letting this girl do something that to her ,sounds good.
Such a nice and real person , such a EASY WAY SHE SINGS ALL , NO ONE CAN DO THAT , PLUS MISS LONDON WHEN SHE SPEAKS . CULTURES MIX IS A SKY FULL OFF WORDS !!
I do this too it’s so annoying I love singing but I’ve been raised and listened to mainly American accents in singing so it’s something we pick up naturally. That’s why I find it so refreshing to hear other accents in singing voices like british and London accents in like punk for example or Irish or Scottish accents
I just discovered her recently, and one of the biggest things that has stood out to me is that she sings fully in her British accent. They’re aren’t a lot of British singers who do that.
Now, I’m British and wouldn’t sing or say it like this, I’m Yorkshire so would just sound awful in a song if pronounced “wah-er” so would prefer people to think of this when they think of British. 🤭🤷♀️ Would love to hear this more in general, love her pronunciation in Escapism. ❤️❤️
Keep it real gurl! And you've kept your heart all this time! You're the real deal and everyone can do the American accent...do. You. You have. Can't wait for the next Chapter gurlfriend 😬 xx
In Britain there are 40+ accents. Some of the most distinctive ones are: Scottish North Irish Essex Yorkshire Cockney Brummie Scouse Geordie Welsh Norfolk Gypsy RP The British accent doesnt exist but RP (recieved pronounciation) or a similar accent is probably the most widely spoken and mostly in Southern England and what Americans think is the British accent.
Funny I noticed this on Genesis, the first ever video I watched of hers and I thought at the beginning of that song she was American but then I heard her british accent as the song progressed!
As someone that sings I did choir for 6 years our goal mainly sing in a British accent the amount of times I was told to sing like I’m British 😂 there just has to be a balance not everything can be song in a British accent so don’t try to force it and not everything will sound amazing in a American accent or will give that chill
she’s so specific and intentional 🥺 as an american- PLEASE lean into your roots. we love authenticity. don’t give us what you think we want to hear. give us YOU. you’re delicious babe 🤍
I think sometimes the way we speak in a British accent would stop you from being able to sing in certain tones, the American accent allows a smoother transition between words and enables an overall smoother tone when singing. There must be a more technical way to explain this but this is my experience 😂
IT IS 100% SELF CONSCIOUSNESS. Prime example : "Man in Finance" blew up and right after Sophie Ellis Bextor made a comeback who is the most unashamed british singer 😅
It only sounds ugly because you're not used to hearing it. You've been programmed to like a type of singing style(s) (African American singing styles in this sense). So I support this, and I understand the sentiment. It's the reason many people are off put to British Rap.
She hasn't got a "British" accent, she's got a London/Southern accent. Northerners pronounce words differently and sound more like what you'd call 'American' sounding. But she is an amazing singer so I think however she pronounces her words she'll sound great
@PommeLavande if you read my comment again you'll see I didn't say northerners sound American. I said the way they pronounce words is more like the way Americans pronounce words, as in the vowel sounds. Southerners pronounce their vowels differently to northerners.
I always think it's interesting how she preserves her British accent but says "highway" in Escapism. instead of "motorway" which would be the word that comes to mind for Brits. But "motorway" sounds so weird and provincial! A highway is driving a convertible down the Pacific coast with the wind in your hair, a motorway is stopping off for a McDonalds at Woodall services on your way up the M1!
Makes me laugh when Americans say “British accent”….. they mean the RP English accent. After all, a Scottish accent is (currently, at least!) a British accent. So is Welsh. Geordie, Scouse, Brummie, Yorkshire accents… all British.
If you wanna be technical, the American accent was the original British accent. The English accent of today evolved as a way to distinguish themselves from American colonist.
@@scarlet6282 because its relevant to the commentary. In this case, I’m not “disagreeing” or “refuting” what the original comment is saying, I’m adding on. If you wanna be technical: the American accent is also a “British accent”. Excuse me, but singing words and speaking differently has always been that way. Singing the word changes the syntax and is why so many, not only British, but people of other languages sound American. One word that let me know the singer is British is “can’t” and that’s used in a lot of songs. The matter of sounding more British in your song isn’t going to change how it sounds and it sounds American.
Black Americans are the reason that music, in general is global and has opened the doors for all cultures to express their own musical talents worldwide so, please stop with the American Music bashing as if it’s a bad thing. I just discovered Raye today and if she chooses to sing based on the Influences of the historical American music genre then, let her do her until she train herself otherwise.
Yeah but nobody wants to hear my Yorkshire accent in a song. 🤷♀️🤭 This is what I think of as a globally audible “British accent” as a Brit. It’s not an insult, it just is what people think of. It’s just not that deep, and that’s from a millennial. 🤣
@@kirstybrown1185I wish Alex Turner stopped trying to shake his Yorkshire accent off, now that he thinks he’s a crooner and he’s too good for it🤣 It’s all about how you use it, of course that sound isn’t going to work in the more US-based genres like some of the soul and blues stuff RAYE taps into, but I know it could still work if you knew how to write with it!
I like it when her accent is used in her songs... honestly... you can hear it a bit in Escapism
A bit? You don't get a much stronger British accent than that song
More than a bit xD
The whole song is in a british accent lol
A bit?
She says ‘mercy’ in an American accent in that song. But a lot of London accent in there for sure

Keep in mind this is a cockney accent. So they pronounce water differently to others in the UK
She’s a South Londoner, Tooting and Croydon. It’s a South London accent, not Cockney.

Can a Brit confirm if her accent is what’s known as MLE?
There is no such thing as a "British accent". Even London has many different accents and dialects depending on the neighbourhood you are in.
Then there's no such thing as an American accent, or Australian by your logic
