AKG K712 balanced mod would also work on K701 K702 and similar models

- In this video I tackle the AKG K712. Removing the original 3 pin mini xlr and installing a 4 pin to allow it to take a balanced input.
The key to getting the old socket out is to heat it up beyond the surrounding plastic's glass transition temperature. To do that, I ended up pressing a soldering iron to the inside of the metal part of the socket until I was able to pull it free.
This is not easy and not without it's dangers so only attempt this if you feel you know what you are doing. For this mod I used an REAN 4 pin mini xlr chassis mount socket. It is slightly longer than the original but a little bit of dremeling and it fits perfectly

I have a pair of 712 hence why I ended up here with you. I will not do the conversion myself since I am afraid of the plastic melting part. But I stayed with you because you are fun to listen to. So cheers, have my upvote!
It's a shame you don't plan to do this regularly. I'd love to have my 712s balanced.
Yes... It is tricky - it takes a bit too long to make it profitable. To make a profit we would have to charge around £200 including the cable. We may make a custom part for them which would bring the cost down to a more sensible level in the future
@@CustomCans I'll have to keep an eye out incase you choose too. You guys are only up the road from me so would be totally worth my time! Just hope it ends up being worth yours too!
Sweet! I have the Unihertz Titan as well! the speaker is dying, I'm going to have to look into repairing it.
They sell the parts on their website and it comes apart quite easily.
the melting part is very naughty, I hope the airfryer would work
We sell an aluminium replacement housing now that makes it much easier

Just been watching a review of Beyer 900ProX, and Beyer told the reviewer that a balanced cable is available...yet it's still only the 3-pin mini XLR on the phones. So they must be doing it by using the plug / socket body as a pole.
I would have to double check but I think that is not the case. I know on the 1990 they will not take a balanced connection as standard and they use the same sockets. I will check this week
Jason - great to see.Any chance of mirror image part with the socket that would replace the cover on the other side? That way can disconnect the headband as a conductor and directly wire each channel via two of the three wires available on the mini 3 pins that are now on each side...
Yes that is a good idea... I will steal it ;) We are just building a super fancy 3D printer which will be able to print very strong and accurate parts from fancier materials. Once that is up and running I will make a batch of them for sale
@@CustomCans Yeah! Good man - remind me when you've the first batch done - that'll make the conversion to balanced really worthwhile 👏🏻
@@CustomCans Ola! How's the project coming along? My 712s are waiting - I'll need a cable too :)
espero con ansias que el proyecto este avanzando, gran trabajo @@CustomCans
I would buy it, if you made the part.
I want this kit if you ever put it together.
have you experimented with the bass port mod on these? Ive been curious but not enough to crack open my pair
No sorry, I have not - we don't normally play with the AKGs
I love my K712s... but I wish I could easily make the orange parts blue.
Lol - no it is not easy
@@CustomCans If only I could get my hands on a K702 Anniversary Edition.
in which order should the cables be soldered on the mini xlr 4?
1=L+ 2=L- 3=R+ 4=R- is what we use
I need to get something done do you have a website ?
jfunk.org/wpc/
What is balance headphones exactly? Does it make it sound better? Like what is the purpose exactly?
I bet you can use a rubber ball to open and close the cap, like they do with wrist watches.
Good idea, I may try that next time we can one in
Sir how to convert them to a 4.4 mm pentacon (end of the cable).
Since you are converting them to a 4 pin mini XLR (start) and (end) in a 4 pin XLR/ 4 pin mini XLR/ 2.5mm TRRS (i.e R-, R+, L+, L-).
The 4.4mm pentacon has TRRRS (i.e. L+, L-, R+, R-, G). So if we want a 4.4mm pentacon cable (end), should we (start) with a 5 pin mini XLR. If so, which wire in the headphone should I make as Ground (G) in the 5 pin mini XLR ?
No you just need a 4 pin mini XLR - there is no need to use the ground on the 4.4 for headphones
what is the yellow wire referred to inside the headphone? mine unsoldered and is too short to reattach but im struggling to pin point the name.
I am not 100% sure what you mean but if you are asking what type of wire to use to replace it... any standard stranded wire would be fine as long as it is roughly the same thickness. Just some "hook up wire" or something
@@CustomCans thanks for that! I wasn’t sure if the yellow wire had its own name haha
Oh man I would love to get a DIY kit. I am brave but I have no skills =) I 'll make it work dont worry.
We are about to start work on a diy kit... if all goes well we should have them available by christmas
@@CustomCans Thats great news. I hope you'll have international shipping. Good luck!
@@CustomCans Any news on the kit?
Why couldn't you just go to AKG and ask for left sided cups, so you don't have to 3d print anything?
I believe the parts come with the 3 pin socket already in so it would not make fitting a 4 pin any easier. You could stick a 3 pin on both sides doing dual entry but it would be nice to have a mirror part for the other side but that my be a solution - I have tried to get parts from AKG in the past with no luck but they may be better these days... It is certainly worth you emailing them and see if they will supply you with the parts
@@CustomCans I mean, sure, you'd still have to drill out the face plate but you wouldn't have to 3D print anything. I was thinking you might've had issues with the one side not being a mirror of the other but it sounds like that's not the case.
Thank you for the response, I think I'll wait for your kit. I've been wanting to do a split cable balanced k712pro for a while now.
Where to buy the mini 4 pins din?
They are REAN 4 pin mini XLRs
When will this be available?
We can do this as a send in service or there should be a DIY kit available in a couple of weeks
guy please use a fan to at least blow the soldering smoke away from your face
it's so bad for your lungs
Yeah. I normally have an extractor on but it makes too much noise for video. I am pretty good at soldering while holding my breath though ;)
@@CustomCans same but I guarantee you get a whiff. I know I do lol
