- John Koerner came to the U of M and Dinkytown in the late 1950s. He dropped out of school and was briefly in the Marines. He returned to Dinkytown in 1959 after visiting coffee houses in Los Angeles and San Francisco and nurtured the scene in Dinkytown playing guitar at the Scholar.
He was already performing there when Bob Zimmerman (Dylan) came to Dinkytown. A few years later Koerner joined with Dave Ray and Tony Glover and recorded the classic Koerner, Ray & Glover album Blues, Rags, & Hollers which influenced a generation of musicians including the Beatles. He still performs on occasion.

Thanks for all the wonderful music.
Loved Spider John since the 70s when i first heard him! Has contributed more to folk and blues music then most will ever know..Thank you John!
Love this! My dad and I met him at a folk music festival a few years in a row when I was a kid in the early 00’s. he was always so fun and such a pleasure to talk to.
Great to listen to his reminiscing about the Folk Revival in Minnesota. His LP Blues Rags & Hollers with Ray & Glover is one of the touchstone LP's of the 1960's.
john is an icon of real roots music , ! when there was no " roots" music label ..
he along with dave snaker ray , and tony little sun glover ,, were a terrific group ,
as well as solo performers ./. thank you for posting this !

The moral to the story for all you kids out there is if you want to be like Spider John. Eat bananas and smoke cigarettes for 3 months.
