I wish I had been looking for this a year ago - your advice is legitimate & sincere & on UA-cam! Great stuff!
This video is awesome - thank you so much. I really appreciate you breaking up the learning with "tiers", i.e. progressing up to more challenging examples. I just started getting into metal/death metal, so I'm in the process of beginning at easier groups (Death), and hoping to work my way up to more challenging things after I get the fundamentals.
This is the best video yet in the series! The progression of riffs to practice is spot on, and your tips about picking from the wrist and keeping the hand loose have helped me tremendously
Thanks for teaching this I may need to start over because when I Tremelo pick I can get really fast and clean but, I have shoulder pain after!! I was beginning to think that I can't do it!!
Very good lesson. Thanks for this. I agree, start simple and build up. Learn the fundamentals then advance. The slower you practice the faster you learn.
love the video! i’ve been playing with my arm this entire time and got NOWHERE but with this technique i’ve already got a smoother tremolo and can avoid tendinitis XD
today I added the right hand techniques of 2nd video and also this songs to my morning practice, this is going to make a big difference. Thanks a bunch.
Great advice! What I struggle with is transitioning between strings, especially when I do an upstroke on one string and then try to go to the next string without doing one more downstroke (if that makes any sense). I guess I just need more practice. Thanks man, your videos are really helpful!
Your advice in this video is lifesaving! One problem that I keep having though is that my pick slips from my fingers when trying to play the accented rythm part at faster tempos. Is that normal?
Do you also press the a-string on the slayer riff, I mean directly on the gallop, and are you sure that all 3 strings are played in the original? Thanks for your videos, they are very good!
Hey Dev. Great lesson, thank you! Is it a bad practice to keep my palm on the bridge while tremolo picking? I mean keeping it in the same position like when I am playing palm muted riffs. I really struggle with string skipping when tremolo picking, and I think this might be the reason why. Although keeping the hand away from guitar is so unnatural to me.
I've been struggling with this technique for over a year. Is it normal? You mentioned in this video that you've been playing tremolo for years and that's how you became good
Nice video I have a problem: my tremolo picking is quite solid, good speed and decently accurate on single string riffs but only sitting. When I try to play standing my tremolo picking is so bad, i get way slower and I struggle tremolo picking on 2 or more sttings Do you have any advice?
@@DevGohil - ...as the reg picks are being physically destroyed or whilst flying out of hand or both...? I went from a decent Tremolo w the Flow Gloss 2mm to a beast mode Tremolo w the 3mm (my pick grip ultimately had to change from 2 fingers to 3 fingers w what is essentially a jazz pick made out of some sort of polyurethane - proper technique blasphemy, but fast).
@@DevGohil To be precise. I hooked the little for years and was not sure if this is a good technique. But your video encouraged me to go on with hooking the little finger.
@@DevGohil Perhaps you should clarify a bit that the Dean guitars aren't really that important ;) . Most of the sound quality comes from your fingers and the amp + cab are important as well, but I guess you could do that with almost ever guitar.
Lol, i remember how i leanred to play tremolo, i heard Ea, Lord of the Depths once and tried to play that fuckin apreggiated chord for almost a year, i just pushed through it over and over again and one day it just clicked. Really I think it was the worst way possible to learn the technique but hey
I struggled with tremolo picking for ages. Still not amazing at it, but significantly better than I was not long ago. 2 things helped me tremendously. 1. Find tension in your body and kill it. Start picking fast, doesn't matter if it's sloppy. Now look for any tension. Clenching teeth, curling toes. Anything. Now stop playing, relax that part of your body and start again. If you do this enough eventually you'll find yourself completely relaxed while playing and the picking will come effortlessly. 2. USE A METRONOME. Seriously. It's like magic. Start at 60bpm. Once you've played the part perfectly 5 times in a row, increase the bpm by 10.
Hey Dev, I have a question… my axe is an ESP LTD EC 1000 deluxe, 24.75 fret scale…. I am trying to set it up for black metal, and I wanna know what you recommend as far as string? gauge and action height? I know in this video you recommend the 10- 46, but with my model’s scale length… would that still apply to my guitar as well, or would I be better off with a higher gauge.. this(metal picking) is new to me and I want to optimize my gear so I can make progress… plan on playing in E standard or D… would really appreciate your input… thanx man
this black metal series is one of the best things i’ve come across when researching black metal, cheers
The worst thing to come across is ALLLL the nazis 😂
Tremolo Riffs. Very Important

Love how you break down the specific songs to learn to gradually build up the technique.

@@DevGohil thank you, I'll give that a try

Glad you think so!
I love playing black metal but as a person who suffers from arthritis tremolo picking is just a big no no
Thanks for your videos 😊
then makke it doomy
love your channel
Great video!
i wanted to do the riffs of i am the black wizards from emperor
I wish we could see how you hold your pick and how you position your hand on the guitar, but nonetheless a great informative video.
I go over picking and tremolo stuff in some other videos, they have much better camera angles

Most of the time I don’t do this, i like to keep my wrist off the bridge when playing fast
That explains why I can't raise my arm-
Well guess I need to start relearning tremolo picking WITHOUT using my elbow
i've got a video coming out soon which will help - also check out my course to help with techniques

Yes, it helps to focus on upstrokes too
My pick occasionally gets caught on the upstroke, how do I prevent this?
maybe you're picking too deeply intro the string
What is your top back and roll album
not sure, been a long time, didn't enjoy many full albums
Is it the same technic in death metal? Like in Obituary and Death?
yeah
Would you add accents in the Emperor riff? or is it better to play each note with the same intensity?
You HAVE to accent the first strum of each beat. Look up my emperor lesson for more info

Angle the pick at a slant

more the middle, these pickups are close together on this guitar
yoo someone who also anchors their pinkie or their ring finger to the E.. I personally do it most with my ring finger cuz ma hands be large.
