WE hope and pray the DJI drone ban doesn't stick, and we don't believe it is in the best interest of the industry as a whole to ban a product with little to no competition.
Another inane comment from a pretend drone professional with only a consumer mindset. A pro understands that a monopolistic, foreign supplier is bad for business. They will be the ones who ultimately dictate how you do your work, any professional worth their salt knows their tools well and does not want their liveliehood to be vulnerable to foreign oversight and the vagaries of hyper distant manufacturing. Imagine you're an American farmer who has to rely on Chinese produced seeds and fertilizer to plant crops, one verbal slight by anyone of note against the CCP could drive you into bankruptcy. Look what happened to the NBA from Daryl Morey voicing support for HK democracy or Richard Gere's career for speaking out on Tibet.
TLDR: One trick pony for mapping with a domestically approved drone, but it's still way too expensive. But I'll take 40 minutes to say it very carefully because I'm afraid of the backlash from Skydio.
Great video, Paul. For those of us who likely will not get their hands on a Skydio drone (like me) it's great to have the objective information that you shared. For now, my DJI Mavic 3e RTK is doing the trick nicely.
Having a lower GSD doesn't mean that the image is better. It may very well mean that the skydio has a longer focal length lens and, or a smaller size sensor, smaller field of view. In that case the other drone would match the imagery just by flying lower. How do the images compare in lower light? The best mapping weather is cloudy weather, not full sun.
You're right that a lower gsd isn't always better. A larger sensor with larger pixels will give more detail for sure. I'm guessing your saw in our mapping class how we actually compare drone mapping data in overcast light vs. full sun. You're preaching to the choir.
Our police force just bought the Skydio X10d... . The drone is honestly very disappointing because of the image quality on the controller. Any suggestions how to get better quality? Just looks like a 480p stream!
Pool up your own money with the other officers and buy a Mavic 3T or Matrice... there's really no other choice. Even "proper" military units at war in Ukraine on both sides have to do it.
As i live north of the border, i am so glad that our political system dont have as much BS lobbying. If this ban happens, you will not have alot of choice and definitely not as good for the privilege of paying4 times as much. Skydio will not be able to ramp up production fast enough. Your use of drones for good will be set back years. And finally, have politicians not realize that with dji, you cant fly over sensitive areas because of the geofencing. But ill be looking for good deals on used drones. Thanks
Did you watch to the end, because we pretty much said that unless you're flying powerline inspections or substations, there are better options out there. The astro mapped the same scene in 18 less minutes...

I used to be able to do some mapping with the Skydio...until the company itself killed the SDK. I bought it for some particular uses. The company decided I couldn't use it that way anymore. Looks like it's another company that believes they actually own the equipment.
The answer still seems to be DJI... But if have the money the Astro Prime is better than DJI's inspire 3 offering. Frankly DJI has degraded their ability to compete with people like Freefly because they piece meal their offerings now. Ie I3 vs I3 cine...

Don’t forget, the key point, there is ZERO reason to consider a Skydio drone at all if you aren’t crippled by the protectionist NDAA in the US.
