I have fond memories of watching the film as a kid with my father. Was totally awestruck by Tom Alter ji's performance as Weston in the film. There's a scene in the film where General Outram asks Weston to recite something written by the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, and Weston recites a passage so passionately and so eloquently that one gets the feeling that he himself might be an admirer of the Nawab. One of the great scenes from the film that really stand out.
I have never seen movie like Satranj ke Khiladi . It is a masterpiece.
No appreciation is enough for a legend like Satyajit Ray or Utram Kumar

my sheer admiration for Mr. Alter! I treasure his most touching rendition of that verse, and the handkerchief dabbed with ittar. a classic scene in world cinema.
The world is lucky that Satyajit Ray had Tom Alter at hand to cast in the film. I feel like he was the lynchpin of the whole movie. I don't think anyone else would have done a better job because there IS no one who looks British and can speak Urdu so well..Just loved the way Tom Alter spoke Urdu. I think Jamie has it too. It just takes me back to my childhood. One can't help falling in love with the language the way both of them speak.

Tom alter was my favourite actor.A British who loved our mother land .. How ever as I am from kolkata many British loved our country , Tom was one of them. Great regards to him
He was not British. I have explained this in several videos to clear this misconception. He was a third generation American born and raised in India. No connection to England in our family.

@Jamie, this film was shot in Lucknow, and in Bakshi Kaa Taalaab, in front of our house, inside our farmhouse; the rural scenes where the two Nawaabs played chess on a charpaai.
