“They killed my relatives here”

Irakatakoa, an Awá man, was born in the forest, before his family was contacted in the 1980s. Forced contact and the destruction of the Awá's forest were the catastrophic consequences of the Grande Carajás project, when mining giant Vale and the military dictatorship built the world’s largest iron ore mine in the Brazilian Amazon. Here Irakatakoa recounts his life story, and speaks about the devastating impacts of the Carajás mine that the Awá still live with.
