I wonder why it is that students can pay back their loans, sometimes two and three times over and still owe the principal. Yes Congress controls the purse strings, why isn’t there an investigation into this?
Why can't home owners pay back their loans? Are their loans being forgiven?
@@zytebac This confused me for a minute, but I think you are asking why home mortgages aren’t forgiven? That is a good question. Especially when selling your home because you can’t afford the payments means you still cannot pay off the mortgage because the value of your house is less now than when you bought it. Or when property taxes end up costing more than your mortgage payments. How many people are homeless specifically because they hit a hard spot in their financial life and end up losing everything?
The big difference is school loans have nothing substantial to foreclose on if you can’t pay your bill while home ownership has a house to repossess what the mortgage company forecloses, but both can be substantial liabilities that don’t seem to be regulated well. I fault laissez faire capitalism for not keeping greed in check. More care should be given to granting the loans in the first place. Consideration should be given for people going into jobs that will fill shortages in the work force, especially if those shortages are found in areas where wages and salaries are lower paying. Our system of 2-year colleges should be beefed up to support lower cost education and our public colleges and universities should be better supported. States and the federal government should be encouraging the building of affordable homes. And for both users laws should be tightened. But at the bare minimum, Congress (and the states) should be investigating why both systems are failing for the many to the advantage of a greedy few.
Federal backed student loans are limited to an amount that doesn't cover the full tuition, room and board, and books unfortunately. Any attempts to increase the yearly loan amount has met opposition in Congress. I'll leave who voted against it, to the readers here. The Loan forgiveness is for loans by Banks, and lending facilities not under the protection of the Federal Loan Program which limits the interest charged and has more safeguards for a student's possible misfortune, then the private loans. Many higher degrees and medical school require substantial tuition, well beyond the Federal Loan Program. The individual State regulates the terms and interest rates of these personal loans, by lending banks and private business. That's where interest rates can be, like credit card rates, up to 36% if a payment is late or missed. The loan forgiveness would pay those predatory loans from private sources off, and have nothing to do with Federal loans, which are most common. The lender receives their balance in full, and is unable to charge Interest. There are technical schools, DeVry for instance that were prosecuted and closed because of the misleading loan terms their co- conspirator private lender offered to their students. This Legislator may be in the pocket of those predatory banks and lenders, as he is asking questions to make his point, not for an answer. He's questioning the Federal Government Loan officer questions about a private loan scam. Forgiveness of those private predatory loans, pays the lender off without further interest payments, and releases the student from a debt that can't be a cause of their bankruptcy. I'll leave it as this.....one political party changed the Law so a personal student loan can't be forgiven under any State bankruptcy, that party starts with an "R" during President Bush's term.

There are grants allotted for every student in America. As long as grades are average and above, it is paid in full. Charities are withholding the monetary gifts. Tax money is to be given back to education for as long as we acknowledge the Pledge of Alligence. A mom❤

You are such a liar, Cardona! If you were concerned about the working class you wouldn’t be going after small trade schools! We have a shortage of qualified trades in this country but you want everyone to go to some four year university to get some useless degree. Meanwhile the trustees of most of the “non-profit” universities are rich. Bad teachers get tenure and you do nothing to them. You vilify the private schools even though they are TAX paying corporations that are just trying to train these kids in a worthwhile career. Your big universities and community colleges are producing graduation rates of 14 to 30 percent but private schools are REQUIRED to maintain higher than 50 percent with more than 70 percent of grads required to go into their chosen fields. Where are those standards for the universities?

This is an example of my Republican party, turning up the misery Index, on the millions of people who are steeped in debt, because they got an education, while we let the corporations the millionaires in the billionaires off almost got free on income taxes. Honest people see a problem here.
I had an acquaintance that remodeled her bathroom with her student loan funding. Another person I heard put a down payment on a car she no longer owns. I'm not in the collegiate world and I know of two cases of abuse and we're supposed to relieve them of their debt. This is insane.
