I love this hobby. even having a drone stuck up a tree turns into fun when your mates come over and help you out. Come chat with us on discord - discord.gg/H6Ra7xB and what is your worst lost drone story?
My drone was stuck up on a tree few days a go. We did throw a piece of a wood to get it down, took some time to hit the right branch. But finally we got it down in one piece
Tried a powerloop got stuck in a tall tree and tryed getting it out with eveything i could throw or shoot at it with an Slingshot. even tried attaching a lead waight to an big stick with an strong fishing line attached to it and shoot at the drone to shake it out. No luck it either got stuck in the tree aswell orjust fell down without anything happening. After one month of trying to get it down, it finally gave up and fell to the ground but rain and sun had bend the frame and destroyed the electronics...
One of the first things I learned : a slingshot, Kevlar fishing line and lead weights are essential in this hobby in the case that a drone gets stuck in a tree. That would have gotten it out of the tree in just a few minutes.
Easiest way I’ve found is a $2 plastic ball chucker I use to throw tennis balls etc. for my dog. I use a reasonably heavy rubber ball with a lightweight bricklayers string line attached. The best thing about this setup is you can throw it very high and very accurately over the branch it’s stuck on which is almost impossible to do by hand once you go past a certain height, and the weight of the ball will pull the string line over and down on the other side. Then detach the thin string line and tie the end to strong rope, you can get 50 meter lengths of very strong cord at Bunnings cheap, then pull the thicker rope through using the thin string line. You now have a thick rope exactly where you want it and can grab each end of the rope and shake or bend the branch to get the quad out. It all fits in a $10 backpack I keep in my car boot so it’s there when I need it.
My other advice would be run reversed props, the quad at least has a chance of pushing itself away when you crash into a tree and I noticed a significant reduction in how often my quad gets stuck since I changed all my quads over about a year ago and I hit trees a lot flying proxy through branch gaps etc.
I got my boyfriend's drone stuck in a tree less than 2 hours ago and he only bought it yesterday...$100 down the drain. Not a "climbable" tree. Would need the fire department to get it. I cried for about an hour because I felt so bad.
I just lost my drone in a tree, it started to drift for some reason, probably a short gust of wind, even though the day was not really windy. Worst possible time, and I cant even get it to move. It’s also a really tall tree, not climbable either. I guess I have to wait for wind again..
Congrats on getting your kwad back. You need the Drone Retrieval unit. Basically a potato canon . Saw it on Drone Camps, and Mr Steele used it. While I hope you never need it. It would be a hoot watching you guys use It. Happy flying ♥ :-)
Worst place I got mine stuck was in a recently cut corn field. Instead of falling in the clear space, it fell in the piled up plant debris and was buried. It took me 5 hours of walking up and down row after row. Bought a hellgate the next day. Cheers Stu
second drone works cool but my suggestion is use a rod under drone so cord doesn't tangle in props, my tool is a sling shot with a fishing reel on it, shoot led weight up and pull larger cord up . we have willow trees and they are not fun. pine trees are bad because quad may tumble into the center of tree and then you can't see it.
I have a Sling-shot with a lead weight and fishing line to get really high branches. You can use the fishing line to pull up a bigger line if you had to.
I totally agree with this method. This is by far the best way ever. It how I've got down planes and quads out of the tallest of trees. Never once took more than a few shots to hit the mark.
No doubt about that I believe we all feel the same for us FPV pilots when we get stuck up higher than we want to be..., it’s dreadful, loose sleep if left overnight lol, or I will threw my arm out or my back out to retrieve my drone. Once took me six hours throwing sticks and rocks. There I was one summer day up in the forest area in Northern California stuck in a redwood tree. And what worked best for me was a grappling hook design like Im going to use it to climb myself up a building lol. That with that idea I used it to grab a hold of the branch and pull the whole sumbitch the down.
Someone (with more time than I have) needs to go through these drone saver techniques that have have been posted and come up with a top 5 list. If I had some sort of game plan ready for a stick done I think I would be more comfortable pushing my limits.
Excellent idea. I think I will Google that. Maybe someone already did. (Not being sarcastic, but you would be amazed at the weird but effective solutions people come up with.) The only really sure fire way I can think of is not very practical - train an animal to get it for you.
I've caught my quads in 80'+ trees. Best way to get them down is to tie parachute cord to another drone then fly to 3x the height of the tree. Then you try looping the cord over the branch with the drone.
Wrist rocket slingshot+fishing weight+fishing reel with line+paracord, or 16 ft aluminum swimming pool telescopic poles taped to gather as many as needed has worked for me lol.
I made a set up that hooks to my Mavic that i hook a thin nylon length of line to it that is more than long enough to do the job, then tie it to a heaver rope and pull it over ! I have gotten a lot of drones out of trees for people that way ! If you do this, remember you have to fly down with that thin line so make sure your set up keeps the line clear of the props at all times ! Best of luck to whoever needs it !
I have a bow and arrows tipped with tennis balls, and I'm a pretty good shot. I've lost plenty of arrows, but I've never lost a drone. EDIT: I did permanently lose a cruising wing and a GoPro Hero 5 about 50 meters up a redwood tree.
Good job. You guys were lucky. I got my Avata stuck in a tree over water. I sent up my Mavic Pro 2 to do the rope over the branch rescue attempt and the Mavic got stuck in the tree as well. I yanked on the rope and the Mavic fell in some mucky water. I found it after many attempts with my head submerged and the muck trying to steal my shoes lol. Fortunately, I had flyaway coverage on the Avata and insurance on the Mavic, so both were replaced within a few weeks. I'm MUCH more careful now. Thanks for the informative and entertaining video :)
I lost a 2” micro at the top (seriously the topmost branches) of a 20m high tree on its maiden flight after an ill advised power loop. Luckily I had a 2.4ghz tracker button on it or I wouldn’t have even known which tree it was in. In the end I got 6 x 3m lengths of electrical conduit from Bunnings with joiners and used the tree as a pool cue bridge to get it down. The spot was popular for wedding photos and there is at least one photo of a happy couple with me halfway up the tree with a noodle like 18m retrieval rod in the background...
That’s the time when a spark would come in handy, easier to control exactly where you want the rope to go. Another idea I have thought of is to buy some thick pvc tubing with ends that are able to be joined together. You could get quite a few meters up without as much drama, just push up from underneath and flip it over to lower branches until you get it low enough that when it falls it’s not going to do too much damage.
That was great! Here in NORCAL, we spend many hours retrieving drones. I prefer a fishing pole so far but have considered another drone as you did. We keep it fun. Happy Flying!
Can you please do a build using the samguk motors. I am trying to build my very 1st quad and saw that the samguk motors are very cheap but powerful. However, I wanted to know a configuration that I can use to build my first drone using the samguk wu 2206 2400kv motors. If you could please do a full build using these motors, I'm sure a lot of people would love it. Thank you Uavfutures for all you have done to bring other people into such an incredible hobby.
Dont know how the restrictions lay on these two suggestions, but maybe a bow if you can have one, or make something like a air powered potato gun but loaded with a tennis ball with a string attached?
I live in a pine forest. Thick. I’ve climbed a cpl. I found with pines, If you can get half way up tie a rope and yank. Get the top whipping about. It fell out. Last one was last week. Had to chain saw it down. Lost an arm and motor after timber!
Can u make a kit (drone, remote, goggles, etc...) for 100% beginners on a budget that can support a gopro hero 5? I wanted to get into fpv drones after watching ur vids, but I know NOTHING about fpv and all the parts and stuff so it would be really helpful if u helped.
Arborist throwline is the bomb for getting your quad out of a tree... 60m long with a weight bag on the end.. I'm an arborist and have used it plenty of times to retrieve my quad 👍🤣
Been there many times, I've used a 14ft telescopic swimming pool pole with a hook at the end, reached a 20ft tree with some work but doable. I also reached a 30ft tree with a 10ft addition of pvc pipe at the end of the pool pole, very tricky, but also got a drome back. My other technique is described in a video, and it is 100% effective for tall trees within reason. If you land it on top of a 100 ft tree deep in the amazons, you are out of luck!
I'm definitely paying attention to this one, I tried power looping a smallish tree on Sunday but managed to land right on top, spinning props did nothing except break a couple of them as the branches were too densely packed, luckily I'm tall and could climb up inside to reach it (must remember to bring gloves next time), but I dread to think what'll happen if I crash at the top of a really tall tree!
Read to the end: Couple of years ago, I flew my quad into a tall tree getting it stuck on a branch. I used the "soap on a rope” method (aka-wrench socket tied to rope). I was able to shake the quad down, but not without getting the rope permanently tied to that high branch. So I pulled hard on the rope, then quickly cut the rope, leaving my socket and the expended rope. Now you'd think this was the end of the story. One year later I was flying gaps and my quad again became entangled in that same tree. On closer inspection, the quad somehow found that remaining piece of rope from a year earlier and twirled that rope between the motor and prop...locking the motor tight! Luckily, a family was nearby enjoying watching me use the same technique “Soap on a Rope” now renamed “Dope on a Rope”. The eldest kid walked over and offered to climb up and fetch the quad. Fearing he’d fall and break his neck I was hesitant at first, but since other people where watching, waiting their turn when I was about to leave it, I agreed, but explained “at your on risk”. Kid looked 15yo, shimmied up the tree like he was born in a treetop nest, untangled the quad and brought it safely back to Mother Earth. I gave the kid $25 for his trouble, suggesting he buy lunch for his family...End of story...so far.
i lost mine in wheat field , buzzer aint buzzing . transmitter seems to get disconnected from drone . i am on ady 3 now , i will go search again blindly
Loving this video and a lot of the comments. Pilots are a very inventive and resourceful bunch !! As for getting it back, wouldn't matter to me what quad was up the tree, I'd have to get it back, lost quads give me nightmares !!
Should use an adjustable wrench .. it has the wieght to pull the rope off the ground and the handle makes for a easier throw.. just something thats in my bag when i go flying .. works every time..
The rope idea is good for trees with a lot of wiggly and weak branches but many trees have stiffer branches and that technique will never work, Oak trees are notorious in my part of the woods to grab my quads or planes and not let go. Climbing may be required but remember that a quad or a plane is never worth yours or someone's life, so don't be dumb.
I think you jinxed me Stew. I'd never got stuck in a tree. I watched this video today and first pack this evening I wedge my 3 inch 15 feet up in a fir tree. A bit of stick lobbing sorted the issue 😉 there are no problems in this hobby just new challenges lol.
My friend's 2s whoop got wedged really high up on a tree. We used a basketball to knock it free. Definitely better than water bottle, string, shoe, etc. The ball is bigger, easy to throw, and will never get stuck in the tree 👍
My drone got caught in crosswinds. The gust came from nowhere and took my drone high into the clouds. With the drone off, the wind turned the propellers creating lift...never saw it again.
I got stuck two times in the same tree two days ago. First time I was able to climb up and take it down. Second time I had to use some thick rope and an foldable grappling hook that I always carry.
Congrats guys. Couple of questions 1) Was the battery knackered? 2) What height do you think it was up the tree? We use a telescopic Squid pole that is 10m long so I’m wondering if it would have helped
I have a 33 foot telescoping fiberglass pole. It's made for ham radio operators to get up wire antennas for portable operation. So far all I've used it for is getting drones out of trees. They make them longer. The company I got this from is MFJ.
After 3 days of trying to get mine out of a tree, trying everything from making a pvc pole to shooting arrows with tennis balls, I had to call an arborist to get it with his bucket truck. Cost $70, but he ended up dressing some other trees on my property for no extra cost. :P I'd like to make a rescue drone, maybe with a functioning grabber on the bottom of it to pick stranded drones.
When trying to see where my crashed quad was in the dense top of the tree, activating the beeper didn't help as much as I'd liked, primarily because of the single note it makes, much like when you hear sirens in a city and have trouble pinpointing where they're coming from, which is why some ambulances now have modified sirens that also emit a short burst of white noise. A buzzer that can do loud white noise might really help locate where your downed quad is.
@James Ellis I have tinnitus, not severe but the constant high pitch whine I have can sometimes be loud enough that being in completely silent environments drives me nuts. However white noise doesn't really affect it, it's high pitch frequencies near to what it's producing in my head that can make it worse, and also it gets louder when I get too tired.
@licensetodrive I sadly know what you mean, I'm also a sufferer and with the hissing, buzzing and humming going on in my head it's hard to distinguish any other sounds clearly, especially white noise. If you've been to OZ in summer when 15k Cicadae are all chirping at the same time and they suddenly stop, the sound carries on in my head.
Tree service uses a homemade rope shooter- basically pvc -air pumped up- shoots bean bags ..over the limb and fish string used to over limb and jiggle weight to get it to ground! attack rope and drag back over.! if bean bag gets stuck.. just use pop line technique to get it out.. just keep re shoot till knock u drone out :>)
I used rocks to try to knock the branch, i used brick string to balls etc. what worked? Fishing pole. Get 50lb line so that you can pull and it wont snap, you can use heavy bolts or fishing weights but it worked
I assume the battery was pooched but did the VTX survive?

The only time I got it in a tree, I just armed and (gently!) jostled it off. It took a few attempts, it matters to see what props are stuck so to rev up only the others. It helps to have air mode off or idle speed zero. But the stuck motor will have the esc quit after a few attempts.
i just lost mine today to a really old and tall oak tree in the backyard. I Duct taped and used pvc pipes as joints to conjoin alot of poles from the garage. It came out as a wicked long pole so i could pick it out of the tree. The pole had to be at least 50 ft., it was bending really bad but i got it lol.
It’s funny because I use my old eachine falcon to fly up fishing line over dead branches on the gums around my dads property. Then we attach it to rope then cable to pull them down before they fall.
Use another drone! And land on opposite side of tree 😄 or smaller water bottle 0.5L and tie rope to neck of it. That's how I'm recovering my stuff of trees 😄
How about putting a large high strength magnet on another drone. The magnet will be attracted to the motor bells. You might be able to use a bully on the drone so you can cut the line if it gets tangled.
A sling shot is the best thing to carry in your bag. If not one of those plastic tennis ball throwers u use for tossing the ball t you do. Much easier to aim. Us fishing line attached to a stronger rope so u can pull through once in position. 30 years flying and both work great. Use fshingles weights for sling shot.
It was cold, I was flying from inside when I decided to fly my super fast build thst had lost 1 antenna, I flew scross the road 200 yards away, it dropped in high grass, and it's been a year and I still can't find it. And 200 feet up a cell phone tower, just the camera, and battery came down.
Got my drone stuck in a pine tree, it was well and truly wedged with a branch between the prop and the arm and sitting on a flat area of dense twigs, in the end taped many bits of bamboo together and had to poke it up to get it out, we pulled string on the branch it sat on but it wouldn't break or shake lose or anything
I use a golf ball with paracord like this but use a slingshot to launch it. You could also use a tennis ball and one of those launchers for dogs to chase balls, they go pretty far
i wish i would have watched this earlier today. lost my drone about 50 feet up in a huge walnut tree. ended up cutting the tree down and its fine, nothing broken!! mavic zoom
Put mine about 85’ up and in a neighbors tree. Shot at it with pellet gun, then tied a fishing weight to some fishing line tried throwing (to taxing on arm for a low ratio of getting it high enough) went to store and bought heavy 1 oz weights, tied them on heavy duty fishing rig. First cast went directly over the drone and over the tree and landed on the ground 20yds past the tree. Pulling it back through the tree it hung on a limb (twig) directly above the drone. When it came loss it jumped over the drone. No glory. Stayed at it till it got too dark to see the drone. Went back next day and got it out on 5 th try!!
I lost a quad in a forest no joke...Never found it... lost video feed and finally just chopped the throttle. Lost all signals and never heard the buzzer Lost a go pro as well. Live and learn
I did basically the same thing quad stuck 50’ up in a tree, after multiple failed attempts and 2 days later, I decided to take a second quad and fly a pull string up and over the tree, just as I guys did I was successful
my son put my first quad 100ft up in the only tree in a field, showing off for friends, went through potato cannon, settled on bow and arrow with fishing line in a rod and then tied 200ft of paracord to that, put the dam line on top of the quad so pulling pressed in against the tree more, took forever
I was in a tree that was at least that big. Too high to even throw a rock over the top! Fortunately a fellow flyer was able to bring out a second quad. And we were able to run a rope around the offending branch. But no amount of shaking would bring the quad down. We had to tie the rope to my bumper and start driving away. When the offensive branch finally gave way. I got my lizard back.
I just got my plane stuck in a tree yesterday and after about 3 hours of throwing stuff I decided to use my quad to knock it down. Now i had a planer and a quad stuck and rain was comming. I had top climb the 30 ft Old oak tree. Quite scary but aty least the rain didnt get it........ :D
I got mine stuck in the lake! As I was taking off my drone suddenly hits the water. Then as I'm looking at my drone sinking I look to the edge of the lake when I took off at. I notice a weed swaying forward and back. DAMN WEED!!
Parra cord with a tennis ball on one end and keep a tennis racket in the boot of your car. Also I have a pool ball with a hole through it is handy also.✌

I carry a chainsaw in my backpack problem solved.
Same
Pops said never leave the house without it
And after a few months.. no more trees ..... lol..I've trimmed a few trees on my property also...Potato Cannons work also
Lol
Use a normal fishing pole. Be easy
Love it 😍 nothing feels better than when your drone comes home lol

The best technique is probably to avoid the tree XD
but where would be the fun in that? XD
But they actually come out of nowhere....I think we should have a video with the song george of the jungle song.....a compilation of tree wrecks...
Well my drone’s sensor update sent it straight into a tree, even with me steering as far away as possible, sooooo.

As always, you guys are hilarious!😎😎😂
Outstanding!
Read to the end:
Couple of years ago, I flew my quad into a tall tree getting it stuck on a branch.
I gave the kid $25 for his trouble, suggesting he buy lunch for his family...End of story...so far.
i know the feeling.. thank you for this video
what type of rope did you use stew? becouse the one i used was thin , broke when i yanked on it and did hurt to pull and got stuck in the tree .
Love the video do more please
Fishing pole with an ounce or 2 of weiights on the end .... Best thing I have found
Very helpful. Thank you
Will finally try tomorrow. DAMN! On a 30m tree. I powerloped too tight. Crashed on to of it. Now itch’s there beeping in the dark.
i lost mine in wheat field , buzzer aint buzzing . transmitter seems to get disconnected from drone . i am on ady 3 now , i will go search again blindly
The new breed of Aussie soft kids never caught a fish.
Nicely done gentlemen!
I got stuck two times in the same tree two days ago. First time I was able to climb up and take it down. Second time I had to use some thick rope and an foldable grappling hook that I always carry.
cool video man, almost lost her last weekend, TWICE! good timing on this video for sure =] cheers
I love this video it's help as a lot when our drone stock in a tree thanks stew 😁
It's just happened to me a hubsan zino plus 2, I think the wind got it abit. Took me about an hour launching bigs stick up. Got it down eventually 😌
Congrats guys. Couple of questions
1) Was the battery knackered?
@licensetodrive white noise wouldn't help if you have Tinnitus or during Cicadae season here in OZ.
I lost my quad and gopro up on a tall ugly dense pine tree with no luck seeing where it's stuck. Lost it forever 😭😭😭😭😭
Chuey Vang 559 feel sad for you
I posted my monumental struggle with a pine, they have dense bits that are murder!
Chainsaw 😨😂
Pure beauty of the FPV :)
This video makes me wanna fly drones! Good laughs and a happy ending... Better than GoT if you ask me ;)
GOT ending has no justice nyahahaha!
I have used another quad with a hooked rope to drop near or on the stuck quad. Your tree looks grippy, lots of little twigs.
My Brother got his one off with a bow and a slingshot... Wasnt in one piece anymore so helpful video 😂
it happened to me today with a tinywhoop. I used a ladder and a rly long metal stick to shake it out a very dense bush tree
Take a bigger drone up with claw or strong magnets to pluck it out?!
What was that thing that ran across your desk at the end of the video? Great video!
Definately smart 👍🏻
Yeah mate water bottle works a treat.. i dont even tie a line to em.. just launch them like a juggling batton
Awesome retrieval. Ingenuity at its best.
Suggestion: fishing reel w/nylon line. Fishing weight. Slingshot. You can take it from there.
It was cold, I was flying from inside when I decided to fly my super fast build thst had lost 1 antenna, I flew scross the road 200 yards away, it dropped in high grass, and it's been a year and I still can't find it. And 200 feet up a cell phone tower, just the camera, and battery came down.
Got my drone stuck in a pine tree, it was well and truly wedged with a branch between the prop and the arm and sitting on a flat area of dense twigs, in the end taped many bits of bamboo together and had to poke it up to get it out, we pulled string on the branch it sat on but it wouldn't break or shake lose or anything
does being in the tree all night plugged in completely ruin the lipo and vtx ?
lipo is wrecked, vtx is fine
Same thing happened to my eachine trashcan. Sadly it's dark now so I can't work on it.
Do you by any chance know where i can get a clockwise propeller?
Awesome job
Y polarized antennas both ways v/h?
Ahh the drone ... also known as the modern day kite...someone call Charlie brown
DAMN WEED!!
That was a fun rescue mission. Always a great time hanging out, especially so when Tony starts talking about his 12 inches 😂😂😂
Parra cord with a tennis ball on one end and keep a tennis racket in the boot of your car.
Also I have a pool ball with a hole through it is handy also.✌
